YOU NEED TO PASS PHYSIOLOGY
VMUF – College of Medicine
Department of Physiology
A PRE-REQUISITE TO 2nd YEAR MAJOR
SUBJECTS
Dr. Antonita D. Macaraeg-De Pano DPBA,
DPBPM, FPSA, MMed, FPSMS, C-MBAH
Editor's Notes
Good day future doctors or should I say…future lifesavers. First of all, recall the reasn why you are here today, attending this session, at this moment in time. Precisely, majority of you have always dreamed to become doctors or maybe some of few would like to carry the legacy of their doctor parents or rarely, a few, perhaps are forced to take up medicine. But whatever the reason, you are here to pass Physiology which is a one year subject and a prerequisite to 2nd year major subjects. So, if you fail in Physiology, you cannot advance to Pathology and internal medicine subjects, which means you get delayed by one year. So, it is a must that you pass Physiology by knowing all the requirements. This is Dra Nitz Macaraeg-De Pano, professor and chair of the Dept of Physiology of the College of Medicine . I am an anesthesilogist and a pain mgt specialist by profession and teaching is an avocation. I am here to guide you in breezing thru physiology.
BTW, pls don’t take screen shots of my presentation today. I will upload it at slideshare and give you the link tomorrow. I have a personal website, follow me there and you will be able to access future slides of lectures in physiology.
The objectives of this orientation is (1st…read) . Here, everything counts from short quizzes to attendance to active participation during lectures or lab. Everything is given credit where credit is due
2nd (read) – We are now going into the 2nd school year of online classes. And I hope everyone already got the hang of it.
3rd (read) – I’d like to emphasize this. I dont make your grades. I only compute the grades that you give us based on your performance.
The Outline includes (read…)
Let’s go to the objectives of physiology. Let me first give you a simple introduction of the subject...
But, before I go into the objectives, I want you to watch a brief introduction to physiology
So, physiology is about function, unlike anatomy which deals with structures, physiology is about the function of these structures…it is about normal functions in relation to the structures and it is about normal mechanisms that enable all the normal functions of the body...all of which are unseen by the naked eye. So, could it be exciting or could it be boring? Much of it depends on you. If you have an inquisitive mind and are always focused on your dream...it will thrill and excite You! So, be focused.
Specific objectives include (read).
My outlook here is this…in order for you to appreciate what is abnormal, you must first know what is normal. That is what physiology is about. It will enable you to understand the normal functioning of the organs, therefore, it will empower you to understand and appreciate diseases.
2nd…(read) At the end of each organ system, you will study common diseases related to the organ systems. We will discuss mechanisms why a normal cell of a particular organ will produce changes that will manifest as diseases
3rd. Gain additional knowledge by means of research and experimentation through your laboratory experiments. It will be conducted in conjunction with the organ sysytems discussed in the lecture.
Let’s now go to methods of evaluation
How do we evaluate your performance? This is quite a challenge for us since classes are online. We don’t get to see first hand your performance in class. But, rest assured, we are continuously innovating and devising means to make online classes fruitful for everyone. The University is now requesting for a lmited face to face interaction. Let’s see if this will be approved bythe Commission on Higher Education. So, until further notice, all classes will be conducted virtually, so, pls invest on a good internet connection.
Learning in the new normal is a challenge for the teachers, students and even parents. After postponing the opening of online classes last August 24, DepEd now confirms that they are ready for October’s opening of classes, for the school year 2020 to 2021, through blended learning approaches after reaching more than 23 million enrollees.
Blended learning is a combination of both online and offline learning methodologies with the use of technology. Online is when the students study with their teacher and classmates through an application that uses a webcam while offline is when the teacher provides the students with the lesson, seatwork or assignment that they can finish at their own pace, within the deadline. All works are submitted and graded via online.
This new way of learning brought by COVID-19 pandemic can be an additional challenge during this tough time. And since going back to the “normal” we’re all accustomed to isn’t going to happen anytime soon, let’s all do the best we could to adjust and make this current situation work. Remember, the goal of online learning is to keep the students engaged academically in order to retain what they have learned.
Here are the things that you need to do and prepare before the school starts:
So, how do we evaluate your performance? Evaluation is based on your performance on 2 facets: lecture sessions and laboratory performance.
Lecture is 80% of your grade. Lectures are given by different professors and instructors, where shor quizzes may be given after each lecture and long examinations on the subject matter are scheduled.
Laboratory is 20% of your grade, where experiments are conducted synchronously with the lectures. Unless face to face interaction is allowed, experiments are demonstrated online by our chief laboratory instructor and your performance is based on the discusion and active participation on the results and clinical correlation. Quizzes and long examinations are likewise given
What are the methods employed…As I’ve mentioned before, everything counts. So, the Dept gives (read...)
(CLICK) let’s go to experiments..this is your laboratory grade. You will be given a separate orientation by our Chief laboratory Instructor.
(CLICK) Recitations and attendance...this is checked every lecture. It is just to give extra credit where credit is due.
(CLICK) Let’s go to quizzes, long examinations and seminar reports
Short quizzes may or may not be given at the end of each lecture, but, this is what is imprtant.. The MPL is 50% which is actually a boost to your grade. However, there is no make-up for missed short quizzes.
Long quizzes and major examinations are scheduled. No postponement except for unforseeable circumstances
Unexcused missed exams – grade 50%
MPL for each major examination is set at 60%. So, for a 100 item exam. Passing is a score of 60 which is equivalent to 75%
Seminar Reporting is a Mandatory requirement . Topic is about Common diseases relevant to an organ system that has been discussed. So, after knowing the normal mechanisms, seminar reporting is a way for you to understand and appreciate the different common diseases. It is also a group work. You will be divided into groups of 3 to 7 depending on the topic.
Seminar reports must include the following:
(read)
Read…
So, how do we evaluate the group report. We have rubrics for that. Nevertheless, the grade is not common to all.
There is a group criteria plus 1 individual criteria, which I will show you later.
Your grade is dependent on content, organization, presentation, delivery and mastery of topic
Seminar grade is added at the final period of each semester
These are the rubrics for the seminar reporting. There are 5 criteria and Maximum point for each criteria is 4 points. So perfect score is 20 points.
Criteria includes:
Content- Does the presentation has an exceptional amount of valuable material using analogies and examples to illustrate mechanisms. And was it beneficial to the class?
Organization – Is it well-organized, well prepared or easy to follow
Collaboration – Dide veryone contribute to the presenattion? Is everyone well-versed in the material?
Use of media – Did you use media or material to support your presentation. Are they apprpriate , easy to understandand attractive.
So, for the 4 criteria namely content, organization, collaboration, use of media are group points. Maximum group point is 16
The 5th criteris which is presentation is an individual grade. Did the presenter speak clearly? Was she/he able to engage the class?
S we add all the points: Group point + the individual point …so, these are the equivalents of the points:
20 is 100
10 = 75
9 and below is 70
If did not report – grade is 50
So, how do we compute your grades?
Actually, The most difficult part of teaching especially for virtual classes, is giving a fair grade to each and every member of the entire class.
Much anxiety is felt when people forget that grades are an imperfect, temporary, arbitrary but necessary measure of a performance for a specific period of time. PEOPLE are NOT GRADES and vice versa. The grade does not in any way reflect the value or worth of a person or his skill in a particular profession.
But, unfortunately society must devised ways to measure a person’s interest for a certain learning. So, grades are necessary measure of a PERFORMANCE for a specific period of time. This is a win-win situation where students are forced to study and learn important concepts and for professors or instructors to give credit where credit is due.
In computing your FINAL Physiology grade, it is important to remember that it is a oe year subject, so you have one year to comply with all necessary requirements.
The 1st sem grade is 50% and the 2nd sem grade is another 50% for a total of 100%. Each semester has 2 grading periods…a midterm period and a Final period.
The lab grade is the same but is computed by our chief Laboratory Instructor.
Each grading Period has
Short Quizzes, Long Examinations which are-scheduled; Attendance which will be checked; Recitation / Seminar Grade; and Midterm Exams / Final Exams.
Take note that the first 4 comprise your class standing grade which is 2/3 of your period grade and the major exam is 1/3 of your period grade.
The formula used for midterm grade is: (CLICK)
Class standing consists of quizzes which is 80% ; attendance 10% and recitation/seminar report is another 10% for a total of 100%
So, midterm grade is CS is times 2 plus midterm exam divided by 3
For the Final Grade:
It is CS x 2 + final exam/3 all of which will be added to the midterm grade divided by 2
Again Class standing consists of Quizzes = 80%; Attendance = 10%; Recitation or seminar grade = 10%
Again, Semestral grade consists of lecture which is 80% and laboratory which is 20% for a total of 100%
Here is a sample computation: Remember that class standing is 2/3 of your grade
For example:
You had 3 quizzes… one 85%, one 70% and one 60%. Get the average of that . It is 73% multiply it by 80% , we het 58.66
Plus a perfect attendance of 100% x 10 = 10 pts
For recitation, you are not that active, so you get 75% x 10% = 7.5. So we add 58.66 + 10+ 7.5 = so, we have a class standing grade of 76.16
The midterm exam is 73%
Therefore, when we compute it: 76.1 x 2 + 73/3 = 75.11
We now go to Department POlicies
(read) General:
All academic policies of the VMUF CM shall be strictly enforced by the Department
Attendance is for those who are Officially enrolled; it is Checked at all times. A Cumulative absence of >20% means FA; Excuses from absences for major exams is on a – case to case basis
Until physical on-campus classes are allowed by CHED, LEB, DepEd and the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), delivery of education shall be through alternative learning methods in accordance with the guidelines issued by the aforementioned government agencies to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Coordinate with instructor for the digital app for your sessions
Link will be posted ahead of schedule
SCHEDULE of activities are “tentative” depending on availability of instructor. Since all of us are practicing clinicians and teaching is our avocation and a way of giving back
For Virtual Exams:
Our Goal isto Maintain integrity & dignity in the virtual exams becoz the exam is a privileged communication; so it must be conducted with utmost confidentiality
Strictly , there is no copying, nor taking Sreen shots of the examination paper. Any evidence of doing this is a ground for expulsion.
We’d like to ensure also that the student is the one taking the exams.
Absolutely, “cheating” will not be tolerated. Sessions are recorded during exams. Any perception or suspicion of cheating will be dealt with accordingly and will be forwarded to the Dean’s office for corresponding action.
In physiology, Major exams are monitored.
These are the requirements to facilitate monitorng. Laptop /desktop placed on top of a table, NOT on the FLOOR, Not on your Lap, not on your bed. ;
a Tripod – positioned @ 3 o’clock , right side of the student; and a Cellphone that is mounted securely at the tripod.
So, this is how it should look: A table with nothing on top except the laptop, and a cellphone mounted on a tripod at 3 o’clock position
Download the Zoom app at your cellphone. Create your own account.
During exams, the zoom camera must always be ON
Access the questionnaire at your laptop or desktop
On our end, this is what we should see…your laptop screen , your table and you taking the exams
Another view… we see the screen, your table top and your profile
These are the checklist for a virtual scheduled exams. Ensure a strong excellent internet signal…If you know you hv poor connection at home, upgrade or look for a your 3 Fs (friends, family and fools) with a strong internet connection, becoz this is your lifeline to your e- learning. You Need 2 gadgets: a laptop and a cellphone. Both Devices must be fully charged
Have spare battery and a good mobile data connection for any emergency such as power outage
Examinee must be alone in a quiet, well-ventilated room.
Nothing is allowed on top of the table except your laptop
Panning of surroundings
8. Avoid any unnecessary movements that can arouse suspicion during the online test.
9. Zoom camera and audio must always be “ON” at all times
10. When done with exams, remain in your seats and wait for the right time for dismissal.
