5. Photovoltaics (PV) – Solar Cells
• Photovoltaics convert sunlight into DC current that can be used for
various application, and through the use of inverter it is converted
to AC current.
• Types of PV systems:
1- Stand alone: DC current is drawn from the solar cell and directly
powering the application (DC machines), or with the use of inverters
and batteries, to operate (AC machines).
2- Grid tie: Draws current form the solar cell and powers the
application required, also links to the mains to feed excess capacity
back to the local mains electrical grid.

8. Photovoltaic (PV) power water pump
• Using a Stand-Alone PV system to power a water pump to move the
water from the water well to the watering location (farm).
• Typical Block Diagram of Stand-Alone PV water pumping System:

9. Photovoltaic (PV) power water pump
• The proposed system is the most optimized system for the Omani
conditions, and it has been designed using REPS.OM software and
implemented within Sohar University campus.

PV system
PV module-arrays:
Number of PV arrays: 6 arrays
Voltage of each array: 12 volts, 150 W
Total power: 900 W
Efficiency of PV arrays is 13.9 to 15 %.
Batteries:
Number of batteries: 2 batteries
Voltage of each battery: 12 volts and 200 Ah
12. ( system specifications )
System specifications are found by understanding the various
input/output relationships of the system components.
The analytical method is used, where a number of equations are used
to be able to design the system.

Conclusions:
• REPS.OM software shows the most optimum PVWPS for Oman with
a cost of energy of 0.18 $/kWh.
• PVWPS designs using HOMER and REPS.OM are economically and
environmentally better than the diesel system.
