This document contains summaries of several music photography examples:
The first photo shows the frontman of Arctic Monkeys in the foreground, suggesting he is the lead singer, with other band members in the background playing instruments, showing they make their own music outside mainstream genres.
A photo of Ian Curtis from Joy Division is a medium close-up during a performance, with enhanced brightness and contrast to show how passionately he performed.
A photo of The Smiths shows Morrissey in the front, with washed out colors and shadows, suggesting a darker tone, and Morrissey's eye line highest to indicate his importance as not a typical mainstream pop group.
I have looked into the layout and composition of magazine adverts for some digipak front covers, some digipak front covers and screenshots of some music videos.

2. This was one of the first photos taken of The Arctic Monkeys in NME magazine. Because there is a man in the forefront of the frame this clearly suggests he is the front man or lead singer. Then the others are in the background suggesting they aren’t as important. The band all have instruments showing how they play the music themselves which means they don’t conform to the usual mainstream genre. This photograph would most likely be on a double page spread.
3. His eye line is right in the centre of the frame suggesting he is important but quite conserved. This photo of Ian Curtis from Joy Division is a medium close up of his face while performing. The brightness and contrast is enhanced making it very defined and bold. The shot allows us to see the way he performed and get an insight into the person as this is how he performed all the time. The microphone stand seems as though he is leaning up on it, this suggests how much passion he puts into his music.
4. This is a photo of The Smiths, the photo holds Morrissey in the front which clearly states he is of most importance in the band. The colour is washed out with low contrast and shadowing on the background, this suggests the band have some darkness about them. Morrissey’s eye line is also highest out of all of them again clearly showing his importance. The use of real instruments connotes that this band aren’t like the regular mainstream pop groups who get everything modified technologically.
