Cindy Sherman was born in January 19,
1954. She is an American photographer who
currently lives in New York City. Her
photography challenge images in popular
culture and the mass media. Her work mainly
looks at the way in which women are viewed
by society.
In the past Cindy used herself as a model
within her work. However later on Cindy’s
work changed to themes such as
pornography, Old Master paintings, and fairy
tales etc.
These themes were seen as conceptual art
which took a liberating effect on Cindy. This
side of photography was able to show the
public her creative side in photography.

Early Years
Cindy Sherman became interested in the visual art at Buffalo State College, where she began
painting, however she later gave up on painting and decided to take up photography.
“There was nothing more to say through painting," she later recalled. So she spent the rest of her
college career focused on photography.
She believed that through photography she could spend more time on the ideas rather than the
process and therefore photography would allow her to do this.
Professional career
 Typically photographing herself in a range of costumes.
 She also worked with photographers Robert Mapplethorpe and Andres Serrano and
produced the Sex series in 1989. These photographs featured pieced-together medical
dummies. Like much of Sherman's work, many critics find the series both disturbing and
funny.
 Cindy explained to the New York Times in 1990, "I feel I'm anonymous in my work. When I
look at the pictures, I never see myself; they aren't self-portraits. Sometimes I disappear."
 In 2006, The Jeu de Paume museum in Paris hosted an exhibition of Sherman's works,
“Cindy Sherman: A Retrospective.” It included works spanning 30 years from 1975 to 2005.
