1. Being a student-teacher for four years on the Bachelor of Education program provided me with
special opportunities such as; going out for teaching practice each semester, facing a lot of great
experiences at school, and gaining a lot of significant information about implementing teaching
English as a foreign language. This tremendously productive journey is reflected in my beliefs
on teaching and learning theories, my teaching strategies, and teaching style.
Motivating and engaging the students
Students need to be motivated and engaged in the classroom as motivation is a critical
component of their learning process. Harmer (2006) believes that without motivation, students
would certainly fail to make the necessary effort to learn.
Because I consider motivation as a vital factor that plays a significant role in influencing the
students’ success, motivating my students and engaging them is one of my greatest goals that I
work hard to achieve. To motivate my students, I believe that I have to be excited about my
teaching and about my students learning as well. I should constantly look for new and different
ways to motivate them to learn through organizing motivating and enjoyable activities.
I applied reading projects strategy to motivate my students through providing them with texts to
read, and then allow them to reflect their new input through acting out, drawing, creating posters,
or writing.
Technology
When students are using technology as a tool to support their learning process, they are active
receivers of the given information.
Since I believe that technological tools can easily attract the students’ attention and emphasize
their interests, I think that my role is to integrate the technology in order to support their learning
process. For example, instead of relying on the text book, I can use technology tools to enhance
my lessons and impact the students’ learning through presenting videos or movies, searching for
related articles, or creating slide show presentations to accompany lessons.
2. During my teaching experience, I used the IT room, where the students can use the computers to
find more reading material that would help improving their comprehensions, for example, I
asked them to look for examples of healthy food and read about the benefits they can gain from
eating this type of food.in addition to that, they used star full website that provide a lot of reading
material for students to reads and expands their vocabulary.
Print/literacy-rich environment:
It is widely believed that creating a print/literature-rich environment is the basis for developing
the students’ learning, as it can stimulate their interests, motivation, and curiosity toward
literacy. Print-rich environment provides the students with opportunities to interact with many
different kinds of print such as signs, labels, word walls, books, stories and other material, which
can influence reading and writing skills (Ruddell, 2009).
I personally agree that students are inspired by what is around them, so I should create an
environment that would emphasize their enthusiastic toward leaning. The classroom that is rich
of the prints should include some materials that would help students to have connection with the
English language.
During my year 4 teaching practice, I worked in creating a print-rich environment through
providing the classroom with a library that contains stories, books, worksheets, beside some
materials that is required to learn such as papers, pencils, scissors, and glue. Also, I included a
story sack for each story that is required in their curriculum. In addition, I created a reading
corner through provided a rug, rocking chair, cushions, and enough space for reading.
Displaying the students work in my classroom played an important role in motivating my
students to produce good results while learning
All in all, these were my views that formed my philosophy of teaching English as a foreign
language. Though, this philosophy might change or improve while starting the field of teaching
and encountering with different students and experiences.
