This document outlines the framework and methodology for a study on postgraduate studies (PGS) in South Africa. It discusses the need for more doctoral graduates in South Africa, examines three institutions in the context of South African higher education differentiation, and defines the research question and aim using statistics. The conceptual framework defines key terms like doctorate and PGS in the South African context. The theoretical framework draws on Bhaskar's Critical Realism and Archer's Social Realism to use a morphogenetic approach analyzing structure, culture, and agency across time frames. The methodology will be a qualitative case study approach.
