Media PGCE Induction Day
10.00 Media Theory and Practice Introduction
12.30/12.45 Lunch (visit from Isabelle
Nabanja)
13.45 English with Andrew McCallum
15.00 End of day
Two truths and a Lie
• I have a gorgeous husky,
called Charlie who is 14
years old.
• I once met Margaret
Atwood, author of A
Handmaid’s Tale, at the
Barbican
• My favourite sandwich is
peanut butter with cheese
and mayonnaise
10.15-12.45 Media Theory and Practice
• Revise/learn some concepts from the
theoretical framework
• Use semiotics to create a photo story
• Discuss and present ways of differentiating
practical tasks
Theory Practice
What role do these play in education?
Are they opposites? Are they related?
Semiotics
• Semiotics is about making meanings – to
communicate with each other
• It is the study of signs and symbols and their
use or interpretation.
Saussure said that all signs are
composed of two parts:
• a 'signifier' (signifiant) - the form
which the sign takes;
• and the 'signified' (signifié) - the
concept it represents.
Task: draw and label each visual signifier and write down the
signified meaning
Words are signs, the word is the signifier t-a-b-l-
e the object with 4 legs and a flat surface is
what is signified
Drum
Magic ????
Glasses
Denotation and Connotation
What you see What you think of
So, to add an extra layer of meaning…
Signifier Signified
A fawn (baby deer), resting but alert. It
has been hidden by its mother to protect
it from predators
Innocence, fragility, other baby
animals, fear, lamb to the
slaughter etc etc etc
Which is which?
Write the denotation and
connotations for these imagesDenotation:
White skull
and
crossbones
on a black
flag.
Connotation:
Pirates

The sea
Tall ships
Jack
Sparrow
Caribbean
Write the denotation and
connotations for these imagesDenotation:
A white sand
beach with
two chairs
and a palm
tree
Connotation:
Relaxing
Holiday
Hot
Summer
Fun
Chilled out
Write the denotation and
connotations for these images
Denotation:
a rat
Connotation:
Plague
Vermin
Fleas
Pet
Making Meaning
• Using visual signifiers only, tell the story
How did it go?
• What signs were successful
• Were any signs unclear or misread? Why do you
think this was?
• Did you rely more on mise-en-scene (props,
settings, facial expressions) to make meaning or
did you use camera as well?
Differentiation?
Next steps?
Homework task?
Between now and September
• Set reading from Vicky
• Choose a YA novel
• Read some media theory (reading list) and
begin thinking about how you might use
practical tasks to help students understand
the theory
