Extended exposure to visible light will initiate photo-
oxidation of vitamins B6/B12 and riboflavin (vitamin B2).
Very high light protection is required up to 550 nm.

In the case of milk, secondary degradation due to auto-
oxidation of lipids (milk fats) results in off-flavours and
nutrient losses, especially of vitamins. All this results in a
specific “light taste”.

The challenge
In today’s PET packaging market there is
a trend toward increasing the use of
post-consumer recycled PET for the
production of bottles, sheets and fibers
This material often exhibits a slight tint or
contains colored particles that affect the
clarity of the material compared to
100% natural PET resin
This lowers the value and limits the
possible application areas of the PCR
resin

TintMask - Extending the Value of Recycled PET
The concept
Holland Colours’ TintMask concept is based on the
principle of complementary colours. The system is
designed to effectively neutralize the discoloration
that is commonly present in recycled PET.
TintMask product range is fully compliant with EU,
FDA and Coca Cola Company directives.
The concept is designed for the PET recycling
environment, the components will not migrate or
sublimate in a high vacuum process.
TintMask products are available in liquid and solid
formats.

Fact is that opaque white PET dairy bottles can
significantly disturb clear PET bottle-to-bottle recycling1
All stakeholders are concerned by the potentially
negative image of opaque PET2
A working group on opaque PET recycling has recently
been created around COTREP (Comité Technique du
Recyclage des Emballages Plastiques) in France

This group has taken the initiative to propose a Bottle to
Bottle and Bottle to Fibre recyclability assessment
protocol for each individual white opacifying solution

Bottle-to-bottle recycling currently is only valid for the
light coloured/non coloured stream. Sorting of coloured
fractions is key and can be achieved

Current main end applications for heavy coloured PET-
recyclate: Strapping, Fibers, Sheet2
Trials for recycling of 50% white Holcomer-based bottles
into new white bottles have been successfully executed
with PTI by means of a standardized protocol

Tests are under way with COTREP in France to assess
the influence of the introduction of 50% white bottle
chips coloured with Holcomer in the fiber process
