Persuasive Speech Assignment & Requirements Florida International University Department of Communication Arts This assignment will teach you how to present an extemporaneously (conversationally) delivered persuasive speech. Using Monroe's Motivated Sequence, your goal is to persuade your audience to accept your position on a current and controversial topic. A full sentence outline, bibliography, and visual aids are required for this speech. It must be 5-7 minutes in length. Points are deducted for going under or over this time limit. Three sources or reference material are required for this speech. You must use supporting material linked to the thesis or claim and material that enhances your credibility as a speaker and the clarity of the topic. Sources and reference material are orally cited by you during the body of the presentation. Main points of the speech should be amply supported by specific research. Research is of sufficient variety (statistics, examples, comparisons, quotations, etc.). You are required to use a visual aid, as discussed in the text. You may only use note cards when presenting your speech. You will lose points if you read more than half of your speech from note cards. You are required to submit an outline using the Monroe ’ s Motivated Sequence format. It must meet the criteria for college-level writing as stated in the Florida International University policies. Informative Speakers Are Objective
Most public speaking texts discuss three general purposes for speeches: to inform, to persuade, and to entertain. Although these general purposes are theoretically distinct, in practice, they tend to overlap. Even in situations when the occasion calls for an informative speech (one which enhances understanding),
often persuasive and entertaining elements are present. First, all informative speeches have a persuasive component by virtue of the fact that the speaker tries to convince the audience that the facts presented are accurate (Harlan, 1993). Second, a well-written speech can make even the most dry, technical information entertaining through engaging illustrations, colorful language, unusual facts, and powerful visuals.
Informative Speakers are Credible
An objective approach also enhances a speaker’s credibility. Credibility, or ethos, refers to an audience’s perception that the speaker is well prepared and qualified to speak on a topic (Fraleigh & Tuman, 2011). Peterson, Stephan, and White (1992) explain that there are two kinds of credibility; the reputation that precedes you
before you give your speech (antecedent credibility) and the credibility you develop during the course of your speech (consequent credibility). In many cases, the
audience has no prior knowledge of the speaker, so they make judgments about the quality of the evidence and arguments in the speech. In addition, they look at and listen to the speaker to determine if s/he is a reliable source of information.

Now in your final assignment, you will combine these writing techniques to write a stance essay. A stance essay takes a
position on a topic and argues and supports that position with evidence. Consider your topic:
• What possible positions/arguments are there?

• What are your main points?
• What are the counterpoints? Are you ready to dispute them?
• Do you have enough evidence to effectively support your argument?

Choose a topic that is significant, contemporary, meaningful, and relevant to the audience. Analyze the audience, link the topic to them in a way that will gain and hold attention and interest, and agreement.Use current and updated references at least 6 references.

Use appropriate coordination and subordination. Use full sentences, including subjects and verbs for the main ideas or main points and the 1st order of subordinate ideas or sub-points. Below are the guidelines for the Informative Speech. Refresh your memory of the requirements before you record your speech. Remember when recording your speech that you must have an audience of at least 6 adults (over the age of 16), and you must pan the audience before you speak, begin speaking without stopping the tape, and then pan the audience again at the conslusion of your speech. Make sure you begin your recording with your name and the speech you are presenting (i.e. Process speech) and make sure you follow the guidelines for recording speeches, available in the Resources section of our course.

Your second formal informative speech is designed to help you further develop speech making skills.
You may give your speech on a PERSON, PLACE, CONCEPT or EVENT
, but not on a process because that was the requirement for your first informative speech. A variety of topics would be appropriate. For example, you might present a biographical sketch of Winston Churchill, or you might research and explain the extent and causes of alcoholism or drug abuse, the significance of the battle at Gettysburg, the causes of the landslide election in 1932, or the growth of cable television. Some topics might lend themselves to persuasive as well as informative presentations. However, you should stick to informing your audience for this speech. (
Do NOT tell the audience what they should do or believe or that something is a problem or beneficial

REQUIREMENTS & EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Your speech should be effectively organized, outlined, introduced and concluded as you did for the last speech.
You must orally cite at least 5 references in your presentation. Your examples, statistics and quotations will support your main points and must be cited in 1) your speech, 2) your speech outline, and 3) your bibliography. Not citing your sources in any of those three (3) places will constitute PLAGIARISM and will result in an F grade for the presentation or possibly the course. This is a critical skill set to develop as a business professional. In business, an individual must be aware of potential clients, customers as well as competitors in one’s respective field(s).
Attempt to secure what I refer to as a “tasty nugget” of information about the business. This is a more obscure or “fresh” fact about the company that will impress your reader/audience.
Developing this skill set will serve you well as you advance on your career in business.

Below are the guidelines for the Informative Speech. Refresh your memory of the requirements before you record your speech. Remember when recording your speech that you must have an audience of at least 6 adults (over the age of 16), and you must pan the audience before you speak, begin speaking without stopping the tape, and then pan the audience again at the conslusion of your speech. Make sure you begin your recording with your name and the speech you are presenting (i.e. Process speech) and make sure you follow the guidelines for recording speeches, available in the Resources section of our course.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. A full sentence outline, bibliography, and visual aids are required for this speech. It must be 5-7 minutes in length. Points are deducted for going under or over this time limit. Three sources or reference material are required for this speech. You must use supporting material linked to the thesis or claim and material that enhances your credibility as a speaker and the clarity of the topic. Sources and reference material are orally cited by you during the body of the presentation. Main points of the speech should be amply supported by specific research. Research is of sufficient variety (statistics, examples, comparisons, quotations, etc.). You are required to use a visual aid, as discussed in the text. You may only use note cards when presenting your speech. You will lose points if you read more than half of your speech from note cards. You are required to submit an outline using the Monroe ’ s Motivated Sequence format. It must meet the criteria for college-level writing as stated in the Florida International University policies. Outlines should have a clearly defined claim; provide adequate support for that claim; be organized clearly and logically; utilize the conventions of standard edited American English; be presented in a format appropriate for this
