My Life, The Arts, And World Events
Everyone strives to do better and succeed, why would people want to do worse? The key to
succeeding may be different across unique people, but a trait known as grit was introduced by a
psychologist named Angela Duckworth in a TedTalk, ...One characteristic emerged as a
significant predictor of success. It wasn t social intelligence, it wasn t good looks, physical
health, and it wasn t IQ: It was grit. Grit, in my words, is the capability of failing or persevering
through difficulties and still being able to succeed in the end. Whether you are or not familiar with
grit, it has the potential to change lives, and examples of this trait are shown in my personal life,
the arts, and world events. To begin with, the topic of grit can be... Show more content on

I also found the time to make some new friends, where we would celebrate after a great run
through or march together through the countless and repetitive sets. This grit helped me to
persevere after it seemed like I was on the verge of quitting, and I followed through on my
commitments. Not only is this trait seen in my own personal experiences, but it also flourishes
in the arts. Furthermore, the trait of grit can be connected to a film named The Martian which is
part of the arts. This movie, originally a novel published by Andy Weir, was released in 2015
starring Matt Damon (Mark Watney) and directed by Ridley Scott. The setting already starts on
Mars when Mark, the botanist of his crew, have set up base and are collecting rock samples.
They see a massive dust storm approaching and they attempt to evacuate from the planet. In this
storm, Watney is blown away and is isolated from the rest of the group, and the rest of the team
assumes he is dead and take off without him. However, the next day, Watney startles awake makes
it back to base and realizes he has been left alone; he is certain he is going to die. The lab setup is
only able to last 31 days, he can run out of food, and if the oxygenator breaks he will suffocate, if
the water reclaimer breaks he will die of thirst, and it will take at least four years for another trip to
Mars where his crew or NASA can save him. Despite all of the troubles, Mark shows

Louis Berkof
Introduction of the New Testament Summary of introduction to the new testament Louis Berkof by
systematically addressing the origin of the Gospel and the Epistles of the New Testament, their
content, characteristics, authorship, composition, and canonical significance, Takes on the difficult
undertaking of ensuring that the New Testament is accurately understood within what he perceives
is the correct historical setting. Berkhof primarily intended this book for his students at Calvin
Theological Seminary where he taught for nearly 30 years. Introduction to the New Testament
incorporates the research and labors of many past scholars, and church Fathers, and presents it in
such a way as to make Introduction to the New Testament a diverse... Show more content on

In defending his point against those that deny that the gospel written by inspiration of God, Berkhof
flagrantly proclaims, Over against this position we hold that the Gospels were written by men who
were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that they are therefore absolutely trustworthy and authoritative
accounts of the life of our Lord. To defend his position Berkhof list but a few passages from
scriptures that support his position. As for those that admit the inspiration of the Old Testament
Prophets, but deny that the Apostles were inspired because they did not use the expression Thus
Saith the Lord or did not observe the characteristic phenomena that accompanied the inspiration of
the prophets, Berkhof gives three points in distinguishing the inspiration of the prophets from the
inspiration of the Apostles. o In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit took possession of the Prophets
sometime suppressing their personality, while in the New Testament the Holy Spirit aboded in the
Church and first the Apostle using them as instruments to produce His revelation. o For the Old
Testament Prophets the Holy Spirit was an external Power that impelled them to prophesy. While

Founding Fathers Hypocritical
The founding fathers may have been smart but they were lacking of important human qualities.
Compared to some of the world leaders we have today, that s no question. Despite being that smart,
you would think they would try not to be hypocritical, when writing one of the most important
document in the history of the United States. The constitution s preamble is hypocritical, it was
then and it is now, but more so in 1789. The Preamble was hypocritical in 1789 because of the
votingsystem that the US had, when the Preamble says Insure domestic Tranquility , and when the
Preamble says We the people.
The founding fathers brought in a system of voting for their leader, this system was very corrupt
at the time of 1789, and made the preamble look even more hypocritical. The major reason that
this made the Preamble look bad is because the Preamble said We the people, the word people,
means ... group of human beings (men or women or children) collectively The main word in the
definition is human, this means everyone. The last time I checked, only rich property owning
white guys could vote in the US states in 1789, excluding Virginia where women could vote. There
are also other reasons for the voting system making the Preamble hypocritical, like the fact that the
Preamble says they will secure the Blessings of Liberty for ourselves... this is hypocritical because
the voting system only let some people secure their blessings, like bankers and merchants, the other
people

Essay about Employee Turnover and Retention
Employee Turnover an Observation
When discussing employee turnover and retention the immediate reaction is to view turnover as a
negative and retention as a positive. Psychologists have been researching and documenting their
findings on the subject for over 50 years, mostly focusing on why people leave organizations (Staw,
1980, p. 253). One cannot deny there are organizational costs due to an employee s departure;
however, it would be naГЇve not to recognize there are benefits as well. Organizations must weigh
the costs of turnover, recognize the benefits, and strive to find a balance.
There is no debate that employee turnover results in some amount of accountable monetary
expense. Additionally, there are expenses that are difficult... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Shuffling all the necessary paperwork when employees are out processed and in processed, tasking
staff to organize and conduct hiring committees thereby pulling them away from their primary
duties has accountable costs. If turnover is relatively high even more costs can be associated with
organizations needing additional staff to specialize in employee recruitment and selection (Staw,
1980, p. 255).
Costs to staff vacant positions are dependent on the amount of recruitment needed. If the labor
market is tight, finding qualified applicants may be difficult leaving the position vacant longer or
requiring the qualifications required to be reevaluated. Conversely, in a strong labor market the
organization may receive hundreds of applications from qualified individuals (Staw, 1980, p. 255).
When considering the cost of replacing employees, training is another consideration. Depending on
the complexity of the position, training may be formal, informal, or undefined. When professional
training is required there is a direct expense and an additional cost associated with lost business
while the training is being conducted (Dalton Todor, 1982, p. 215). Typically new hires for
complex positions have already completed formal training at their own expense (doctors, engineers,
programmers, etc.). Informal training is generally provided by co workers. The length of the
training is categorized by the complexity of the tasks. When positions are undefined, the new hire

Feeling Exploratorium field trip changed my stereotype of museums. In the past, museums do not
exist as the representation of recreational places. For example, art museums are always reserved and
high class places where are not comfortable to just step in within casual style. On the other hand,
history museums usually leave an impression of depth and seriousness since what I see are left by
ancestors. Although both of them are the advanced resource for study, they are not locations to ease
the tension. Nevertheless, Exploratorium is totally different, a combination of education and
recreation. In the West Gallery, the museumuses experiments and entertainments to reveal social
behaviors, such as Sip and Squirt which displays a scenario

Examples Of Globalization In The Movie Lion
Globalization has been presented in almost all of the movies today. In the movie Lion , a big part
that helped the main character find his way was through technology, using media, trade, and
transportation as the main factors. In this film, the producers and directors took a true story about a
little boy s unfortunate mishap that turned around and changed his life. As he went into his
adulthood he used technology and transportation to find where he came from, and through
globalization it abled him to find his way back home.
Throughout the movie the train symbolized the transportation factor of globalization. The train was
there in the beginning when the boy lost his way and, was there at the end when he found it. In the
modern world, trains, planes, cars, and trucks is what we use to travel or transport goods. Yes,
sometimes we can lose our path but transportation also helps us find our way back. Saroo, the
main character of this movie, started off the movie as a little boy around the age of five whose

His Mother and Father were great soccer players during their time of international competition.
When Kevin, which everyone calls Kev for short, displayed an interest in the game at three. His
Parents taught him, everything there is to know, about the game. To his Parents surprise, Kevin
was a fast learner and very skilled athlete. One day at school, Kevin had heard about soccer
tryouts from his fellow classmate Jason. Hey Kevin, Jason asked, are you trying out? Sure Kevin
replied. Are you? Kevin asked? Heck yeah Jason answered. Cool, Kevin said, we ll both be on the

Kevin asked. He received no answer. He just can t figure out, why he wasn t allowed to tryout.
Kevin told his Mom and Dad, what coach said to him, his Dad said to him, don t give up son,
and you will make it on that team. Well, Kevin went to his school s soccer games , to support the
team and his friend Jason, who by the way made the squad. The team wasn t bad, but their goalie

subs on the team were too afraid to get into the game. Out of fear, letting their team and coach

skills.
Study of summer intervention in which a short amount of instructional time was spent with at risk
for school and reading failure.

significantly less than other students
Evidence:
One hundred and twenty five children who had completed grades 1 3 and were at risk for school
and reading failure were randomly sub divided into three groups to test the effectiveness a three
week summer reading program on retention and improvement in reading skills.
Children in all groups were given the Gates McGinitie Reading Test: a commercially available,
standardized, group administered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reasoning:
Consistent reading remediation in the first three years of school helps children to maintain and/or
improve their reading skills.
Of importance, this study showed that even a few hours of reading intervention goes a long way in
helping at risk children with retaining and improving their reading skills.
Conclusions:
This study shows that summer reading programs benefit children from low income families whose
parents may not be motivated or able to bring them every day for an entire summer reading program
and the children themselves may not be motivated or even willing to attend an intensive and
lengthy summer reading program.
This may be beneficial to the United Way and its stakeholders as they may not have the level of
funding and support needed to carry out an extensive and extended summer reading program with a
nutritional component; to pay salaries and benefits for teachers involved in the summer reading
program and to campaign and obtain as many volunteers needed to successfully carry out this
program on a yearly

The Failing Discourse of the US Government Essay
In the United States, perpetual conflict is most noticeable in the political system. The cause of
the conflict is not that we have a two party system but rather that the parties are divided not by
ideology, but by identifying themselves as the antithesis of the other party. This kind of mentality
hinders the progression of ideas and prevents social and cultural growth. This is not a violent
conflict over land or over religion; it is a conflict over the very soul of the United States. By
identifying themselves as antitheses, they leave no room for growth in compromise or
collaboration. Palliating this dilemma is extremely difficult and differs greatly from the typical
conflict because they are already supposedly representatives of... Show more content on

Whether these allegations are true or not, this type of mudslinging deflates the citizenry s belief
that the government is able to get things done and is working in the best interests of the people.
Thus, government rhetoric is destructive to the unity of the US because of its polarity, which pits
Americans against one another. So, how does a nation over come these issues? One possibility is to
eliminate parties all together, but this probably would not change anything. It would only push the
colluding into the shadows. The only real solution is to stop the polarization by having politicians
realize they are actually on the same side and must stop fighting each other. This can be done
through conflict transformation, but there must also be disincentives to using inflammatory
rhetoric and colluding. These events are prevalent in ideological disagreements like abortion rights
and in both practical disagreements like healthcare, and only through conflict transformation can
there be any movement in the stagnant US political system. The public debate over abortion in
the United States has intensified since the Supreme Court s decision in Roe v. Wade. Advocates
on each side of the debate often hint that we must select between two stark options: Pro life and
Pro choice. Strong pro life advocates claim that abortion is immoral (except perhaps in a few
cases) because the fetus is a human being from the

1.)
One of the responses people usually have about
Oedipus
is if he really deserved the fate that he ended up with.
It s
not his fault that
Jocasta
and Laius tried to outsmart fate and dispose of him. In trying to run from this prophecy, did he
really do anything any other person, given the culture, wouldn t have done? Is Oedipus a victim of
fate or is he responsible for the choices he makes?

There are definitely two arguments on whether or not
Oedipus
had fallen to fate or made his own decisions, but if you think about it, the prophecy stated literally
everything that was going to happen, and maybe it would not had happened if Oedipus did not
seek out everything because the prophecy only unfolded when he began to venture out and look
for the problem trying to solve his own problems. Him doing this unraveled something much
worse and is what led him to his banishment, so if you think about it, maybe fate did bring him to
this terrible ending, but how can we be for sure because he did make these decisions himself.
Jocasta
and
Laius
were the two to blame for believing in such a thing and leaving their child to die a terrible death,
only to come back and have the prophecy happen anyways. King
Laius
sought out the prophecy and found out that their son
(if
they had one), would eventually kill him.
He
did not want this so he gave up his son for adoption. Oedipus got into an altercation and ended up
killing his birth father even after he sought out the prophecy as well only to find out that he would
still end up killing his father.

How Does the Development of Core Competencies Provide Both...
How does the development of core competencies provide both advantages and disadvantages for
an organisation? What steps can managers take to prevent core competencies becoming core
rigidities? In today s world competition among firms becomes globalized and more intense. In
order to become superiorly competitive, companies should enhance its competencies in a way
that will allow them to achieve dominant position in a market. One way of accomplishing it is by
development of core competencies. Competencies are considered core if they are skillfully
performed and are principal to company s strategy and its competiveness (Thompson et al, 2013).
They are result of collective learning activities (Prohalad and Hamel, 1990), a combination of...

For instance, mentioned by some participants in the discussion, Nokia lost its leadership in
production of mobile phones as they were unable to adapt to the new era of phones pioneered by
Iphone. There has been general consensus throughout the discussion that applying dynamic
capabilities approach can prevent core competencies becoming core rigidities. The idea of dynamic
capabilities lies in a necessity of a company to create, extend and modify its resource base, whether
it would be minor continuous improvements; creation of new resources or combination of existing
ones in new ways; or a complete renewing of the resource base, depending on how dynamic the
environment is, in order to sustain competitive advantage and address external changes. What is
important here is the managers perception of the environmental dynamism that providesthe basis
for their ability to identify the need for changes and extend those changes when necessary.
According to Amrosini et al (2009), managers who fail to identify correctly the environmental
dynamism may react not accordingly to the actual environment and, thus, apply insufficient
changes (risk of strategic shift), prefer predictability of routine past

Four Examples Of Laws Or Regulations That Affect Fire...
Four examples of laws or regulations that affect fire service managers and their employees.
Patrick Latham Columbia Southern University Abstract There are a multitude of laws and
regulations that provide guidance to managers and employees as to what their rights and
responsibilities are in the workplace. These laws and regulations originate from all three
branches of government and enforcement occurs at the local, state, and federal level. As
firefighters, it is incumbent upon us to be aware of these laws and regulations and to be aware that
we can be held civilly as well as criminally responsible for our actions. In the following paper, we
will examine four cases where firefighters or fire agencies failed to be cognizant of this... Show

The EEOC investigated and attempted to resolve the matter without filing a lawsuit, but the fire
district was adamant in their denial that any discrimination took place against the firefighters
(Long Island Newsday, 2008). Prior to trial, the Easton s Neck Fire District decided to settle the
case with the EEOC and agreed to make retroactive payments to the firefighters. There is no
reason given as to why the fire district decided to settle but even a cursory examination of the
Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) shows that the district would not have
prevailed in court. This federal law plainly states that workers age 40 and over are protected
from age discrimination and by denying pension or retirement benefits based on age the fire
district was in violation (EEOC, 2009). The second case we are going to look at concerns a
failure to act lawsuit brought against the Washington DC fire and EMS and the city s former
medical director for the death of a patient that was misdiagnosed by the department s paramedics

suit further alleges that not only did the paramedics fail to diagnose his condition, they failed to

Philadelphia Experiment Conspiracy Essay
Philadelphia Experiment: The truth in the Conspiracy
Imagine a future more advanced than the time we live in. A future filled with inventions we can
only imagine, a future where a single thought can takes us across the world in a matter of seconds.
Redundant to the sentence above it. Can you imagine a future where militaries can cloak their ships
making it invisible to the human eye? Is this an interesting future? Carlos Meredith Allen or
Allende, was born on May 31, 1925; in Springdale Pennsylvania to an English father and a French
mother. Growing up, Allende display signs of brilliance in school but never uses his brilliance to
his advantage. Allende then grew up, and claimed that the U.S. Navy hid facts about their
Philadelphia Experiment. On the other hand, the U.S. Navy said they never conducted a
Philadelphia Experiment and Allende was only trying to start a conspiracy. Allende may be telling
the truth about the navy hiding facts about the Philadelphia Experiment, or the U.S. truly did not
conduct the experiment and Allende is trying to create a conspiracy. With Allende s unrealistic
story and as the only person to come out about the Philadelphia experiment, he is most likely trying
to create a conspiracy. Also there is no evidence that the Navy conducted a Philadelphia Experiment.

Samo Duck Project Analysis
By the end of April, the Samo Duck Project will have added three colorful new ducks to Norman

Director of the Firehouse Art Center proposed his idea for the four foot fiberglass duck that
would foster community based social interactions about art and awareness towards the art in
children s environments. I sculpted a maquette and presented it to the board. My hope was we
could do a project that was 100% local. A local sculptor, local fabricator, and get local artists to

that s a part of the Firehouse Arts Center, as the other eighteen have been placed throughout the

Justification For Osteoporosis
Justification
Osteoporosis is commonly known around the world as the numbers continue to increase every year.
Osteoporosis is known to cause problems in middle aged women and occasionally effecting some
men (1), currently reaching the number of 200million women diagnosed with osteoporosis (2).
Arthritis Organisation states that anyone can get osteoporosis but women are about four times more
likely than men to develop it, with two main reasons contributing to this fact. For several years
after menopause occurs (ovaries stop producing oestrogen), the process of bone loss speeds up,
increasing the chance of being diagnosed with osteoporosis. Yet men generally reach a higher level
of bone density before the process of bone loss begins. Although ... Show more content on

As osteoporosis occurs due to calcium deficiency, diet habit changes are crucial, allowing the body
to recover and strengthen the bones. Bone strengthening nutrition often includes an increase intake
of calcium and vitamin D (5).
As recommended, nutritionists often say that a sufficient amount of calcium intake per day is
1000mg for women over the age of 19 (6). Unfortunately, many people find it difficult to meet
the requirements as not all calcium we take in is used effectively. Some is lost and some
excreted. However, with the menu provided, calcium intake levels have been boosted to fit
patients diagnosed with osteoporosis. For example, the glass of milk provided at breakfast
contains 300mg per cup, providing approximately 1/3 of the recommended amount (7). Not only
does milk boost up the calcium, but most dairy products, tinned sardines or salmons, soy based
products and dark leaved vegetables also contain calcium (8). Some of these meals include the
cream of potato soup. As it remains as a side dish of the lunch, only 37mg of calcium has been
added. With all other meals and their calcium levels, the body is able to receive enough calcium per
day, as recommended. One other example throughout the menu that consists of calcium is the apple
turnover and custard for the dessert. This dessert comprises of ingredients such as milk and cream
allowing the body to consume a sufficient amount of calcium. Other calcium products has been
added throughout the meal to balance out the calcium intake of the day, without an overdosage as it
can have other side effects such as hypercalcimia which occurs due to too much calcium in the
bloodstream. To prevent osteoporosis the menu provides suitable amounts calcium, where the
calcium intake approximately adds up to 1087.17 mg (7) per day, meeting the recommendations,
which proves that the calcium consumption level is just right to help with the

Retooling the staff so that it would be able to predict problems and work with communities and
development interests of other public agencies was her number one priority. Teams that are
cohesive, productive, and efficient, whose members enjoy doing their work and working
together, are a result of managers developing and leading teams that work in these ways.
Successful teams are cohesive because team members work cooperatively, sharing common goals
as well as the resources to achieve them. They are productive, because they have clarity on the
common goal and purpose. The manager in the case determined this to be the first priority in her
efforts to turn the department around. She helped the staff decide wither they wanted to be a part
of her vision for the department. She accomplished by clearly identifying her goals and objectives
then had them make a clear choice, you re either in or you re out, shifting the focus from skills and
talents of the existing staff to their priorities and values. They are efficient because tasks are
assigned in a way that takes into account the broader picture and strategy, rather than letting the
team be dominated by near sighted tasks that did not produce a valuable product to their customers,
shifting from policy recommendations based on research to active negotiations with communities.

Sociology Of Education As A Social Institution
Sociology of education
The sociology of education is a diverse and vibrant subfield that features theory and research
focused on how education as a social institution is affected by and affects other social institutions
and the social structure overall, and how various social forces shape the policies, practices, and
outcomes of schooling (www.thoughtco.com). Sociology of education is the systematic study of

What is the purpose of schooling?
7.Does education really change the society?
Educational sociology
Educational sociology determines the initial tendency of educators to view education from a social
point of view. It included a vast array of contents taught for the purpose of teacher training and
others interested in education. Educational sociology is by definition a discipline which considers
education within the purview of needs and values of society, it starts with the premise that
education is a social fact, a process and an institution, having a social function and being determined
socially. These kind of tendencies could be found in earlier educationists like Plato, the father of the
philosophy of education, who had a deep insight into the social function of education, and most of
the great educationists, especially Comenius, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Fichte and Dewey explored the
relations between education and society.
However, since Herbart established pedagogy as a systematic theory, the main trend of educational
theory for a long time has been individualistic, in that it took the completion of an individual being
as the aim of education, with teaching seen as a deliberate and planned process of formal
instruction. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, in opposition to this individualistic theory, a
pedagogy emerged which held that the nature of education should be considered from a

Character Development In The Call Of The Wild
Structures And Style Enhance Theme
Once you begin a book, you re thrown into a story. As you read you begin to see the true meaning
of the book. You see the theme. Character development shows you how the character progressed
throughout the story and changed to enhances the theme. Plot events show the character s reaction to
an event to enhance the theme. Setting puts the character in a place that they have to adapt to,
which helps bring out the theme. Although each book has its very own unique theme, all authors
use character development, plot events, and setting to express the theme. Character development is
one structure authors use to express the theme. In Call of the Wild Buck, a domesticated Scottish

And strange Buck was to him, for of the many Southland dogs he had known, not one had shown
up worthily in camp and on trail. They were all too soft, dying under the toil, the frost, and
starvation. Buck was the exception. He alone endured and prospered, matching the husky in
strength, savagery, and cunning. Then he was a masterful dog, and what made him dangerous
was the fact that the club of the man in the red sweater had knocked all blind pluck and rashness
out of his desire for mastery. He was preeminently cunning, and could bide his time with a
patience that was nothing less than primitive (London 28). This quote from Call of the Wild by
Jack London shows the theme of primitivity. Buck has endured what nature has thrown at him. He
will fight for survival until he has no more fight left in him. His transition from being
domesticated to fending for himself, had brought out the dormant instincts in him. There he d

Essay on the Transformation of Beowulf
The Transformation of Beowulf
In the length of the poem, Beowulf goes from abandoned child to gallant warrior to King. This
transformation, expressed in the tone and content of the poem, shows the importance of the
relationship between lord and thane and expresses the ultimate value of that connection. From the
difference in battle scenes to Beowulf s speeches, it is clear that he has gone from a somewhat
self loving hero to a selfless king. Within this change he also goes from serving a lord to becoming
a lord, and in that way the poem shows us the importance of both sides of the relationship.
Initially it is said that Beowulf goes to flight Grendel because, he ... Show more content on

He goes in knowing that he will probably die, and the scene is bloody and drawn out. Furthermore,
Wiglaf enters the final battle to help him, showing the respect that he has earned from his thanes
and that they are now willing to give their lives for him.
After the final battle there is another expression of the importance of loyalty in their culture. That is
when the thanes that left Beowulf came back behind shields (2850). It is the ultimate disgrace that
they left their lord, because the lord is their source of livelihood and a thane is expected to
willingly give his life for his provider. Wiglaf sums up this tie when he says, A warrior will sooner
/ die than live a life of shame (2890), meaning that the bond between lord and thane is so strong that
it is better to die than to disgrace that relationship.
The tone of the poem is also an indicator of the changes in Beowulf. In the first two battles there
is an epic tone. Beowulf is gallant and described in a very physical sense. He is adorned in
jewels by king Hrothgar and has the utmost confidence. He also has no one relying on him as a
thane would a lord. By the final scene the tone is less bounding and more melancholy. Beowulf is
less confident, and worries more about his people than his own reputation. The sadness in the tone
also reflects the despair of Beowulf s kinsmen when he has died. This further relates the importance
of the king to his

Process Improvement
Process improvement is a fundamental to business management. If you run an operation (and all
businesses do, one way or another) you are reliant on two things: * The people you employ, their
skills and capabilities * The processes that you use, the way you do things
So the only ways an operation can perform better are to improve its processes or its people.
Changing processes (the way you do things) is something we all do everyday.
So what is all the Fuss About?
There is a lot of mystique associated with process improvement, lots of jargon and multiple
methodologies but process improvement is very easy. There are only three simple questions that
you need to get your mind around:

Why Is Frederick The Great Effective
Frederick II or Frederick the Great was a monarch of Prussia that reigned from 1740 to 1786.
Another monarch which reigned during Frederick the Great s reign was Maria Theresa, of the
Hapsburg family, who reigned from 1740 to 1780 over Austria. She came into power because
her father, Charles VI, created a document called the Pragmatic Sanction. The Pragmatic
Sanction is a document that other monarchs signed to allow Maria Theresa to inherit the
Hapsburg land. However after Charles died, not all the countries agreed with the Pragmatic
Sanction. This lead to conflict between Prussia and Austria. Because of this conflict, historians
debate which ruler was more effective and powerful. Frederick the Great is a more effective and
powerful ruler because he won several wars against Austria, he had a stronger alliance with
Russia, improved Prussia s domestic affairs, and succeeded in foreign affairs. Some consider
Maria Theresa worthy of the title and even a more effective and powerful ruler than Frederick II
because of her achievements in the arts and architecture. Maria Theresa... Show more content on

When doing business in Italy dressing well is a priority. Italians perceive how you dress as a
reflection of your social standing and relative success, as well as your competence as a
businessperson. The dress tends to be on the formal side whether for business or for social
situations. You should do your best to make clothing choices that are both tasteful and stylish.
Italians would never wear scuffed, unshined or unfashionable shoes. Men should wear expensive
sophisticated, ties and well cut dark suits. Men often wear accessories such as cuff links, tie clips,
and stylish watches. Women are advised to dress simply and with elegance. Italian businesswomen
usually wear more makeup and jewelry than American women do. Women do not wear stockings in
the summer. Both men and women use perfumes and colognes.
When getting ready to make a deal with an Italian businessperson you should have a translator

The Lake Of The Woods And The Vietnam
Important Aspects in the Novel In the Lake of The Woods and The Vietnam in Me by Tim O Brien
As most of the people in American spent time thinking about clothing and feeding themselves and
their families, the rarely spend time thinking about philosophical issues. Tim O Brien says that he
jars people to look into important things, meaning that he makes people look into the deeper
meaning of the issues reflected in his novels instead of focusing on the basic issues alone. This
paper will analyze the important aspects that are reflected in the Novel In the Lake of the Woods
and the article The Vietnamin Me by Tim O Brien.
Important Aspects In the Lake of The Woods by Tim O Brien
One of the vital things in this novel is its setting. The major conflict in the story occurs at the
northern west angle of Minnesota. The major characters in the novel, John and Kathy chose this
location because of its isolation. This setting helps in shaping the story because that is where Kathy
disappears, and the rest of the novel shifts attention to her search. Another important element in the
setting of this story is the American political environment. When John enters the race for the Senate
seat, the conflict between him and Kathy emerge as it reduces the interaction of the two. In
addition, his involvement in politics unearths his involvement with Charlie Company which leads
to his dismal failure in politics. As the two continue to relax in the woods, many past events begin

In the second stanza lines three and four she uses the style of a metaphor to express that she is
independent. I ve grown too strong, to ever fall back in your arms, this does not mean she
physically grew more muscle, but she grew emotionally. She now knows she is confident, self
reliant and does not need her heartbreaker anymore. The 3rd verse is a flashback where the
lyricist remembers how traumatic it was to recover from the pain. In the lines It took so long to
feel alright, remember how to put back the light in my eyes, Perri uses imagery to say that it
took her a long time to feel happy and stand on her feet all because her ex boyfriend was
emotionally detrimental. She also explains that she regrets all the time she spent with her past
boyfriend because he broke all his promises. The outro of Jar of Hearts (where it repeats who do
you think you are four times) is her in disbelief that her past partner wants to return. Central
tensions are used in this song such as dependence vs independence and anger vs happiness. To sum
up this paragraph, Perri is now independent and represents that as she deeply despises her ex

It was on October 21, 2003 at 5:37 pm that the nightmare started. A wildfire, The Cedar Fire ,
spread rapidly in the Cleveland National Forest. Communication systems were destroyed and
houses burned to the ground. The fire was contained on November 4, 2003.
It is said that the wildfire was caused by a lost hunter. His name was Sergio Martinez. He is from
Redlands, California. Before starting the fire, he was following his hunter buddy, Ronald
Adkins, until they got separated at 10 a.m. that morning. He lied at first and said he shot his rifle
before laying down to rest in hopes to draw attention. Sergio Martinez then confessed he lit two
small signal fires which later turned into fourteen separate fires. He wanted to improve his
chances of being found. The fire he started was to be a signal fire and one to keep him warm.
But as minutes passed, the fire grew out of control. The fire started near San Diego but Martinez
was found in Cold Water Canyon in Beverly Hills, California one week later. He claims he was

explains how the Ecuadorian government is in control of all natural resources even though certain
tribes own the land. This means that the tribes own the land but cannot profit from all of the oil on
their land. Joe mentions that among the different native groups the Huaorani consider themselves
never to have been conquered. The Huaorani are a very fierce group and have driven away
invaders time after time for many years. Joe is traveling with Enquiri and other Huaorani into the
jungle. When traveling into the jungle he sees major oil pollution and gets

Child Life Experience
This week at Tufts, I was able to intern both Friday and Saturday. Going into this week, I
imagined going in two days in a row would be beneficial to my experience. I thought that I would
be able to build a stronger connection to some of the children that would be staying at the
hospital; however, this was not the case. I realized from working these past two days that the role
and day of a Child Life Specialistdepends on the admittance to a hospital. This may be the case
for other hospital staff as well. On Friday, there was 20 total children who were admitted to the
hospital, 6 of whom were in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMT) which has their own specific
ChildLife Specialists. A few of those children were being discharged later in the afternoon, so

One of her legs was in a full cast and I was also told that her joints were hypermobile. Because she
has a developmental delay, most of her play was simple (moving cars back and forth, opening
and closing doors, and pushing buttons). She was also unable to pronounce words clearly,
which could be speech apraxia. Additionally, she was still crawling. Most children take their first
steps between 9 and 10 months. Some children take longer to take their first steps and this
typically is around 14 or 15 months old. This girl was 22 months and was still crawling. As she
crawled, her cast weighed down her leg. I spent most of my time sitting behind her making sure
that her leg followed the rest of her body when she crawled place to place or else it would pop out
of place. After she was brought back down to her room, I spent the rest of the day organizing
DVD donations. Each DVD and DVD case needed completely sanitized and needed to have Child
Life X5323 and the DVD rating written on it.
On Saturday, I met a different Child Life Specialist, who works full time at Boston Children s
Hospital and per diem at Tufts Floating Hospital. I was able to hear different opinions on the

Executioners Way Short Story
Executioners Way was not far from Alistair s shop and they arrived at the hut in question just as
the last rays of the sun left the sky and night proper began. It was a large two story house with
bamboo walls and a palm frond roof. No light shone through and of the windows and the place
looked completely abandoned. As they approached the front door they found it shut tight and
locked. Belgarion squatted in front of the lock and, producing a small tool set, attempted to pick
the lock. Unfortunately, with night close all around them, and the heat of the jungle making
absolutely everything slick with moisture, he simply could not flip the clasp. While Belgarion
silently cursed at the stubborn lock, Lucia went around back of the hut to search for another
entrance. It was there she came upon a hidden cellar door, free of any lock or bolt. Calling out to
her companions, they descended the stairs into a small dark... Show more content on

The center of the eastern wall had folded back into itself leaving a dark hole to another room.
Tentatively, the party moved through the wall only to find another empty cellar room. Once
again, they spread out searching for another secret passage or clue as to the rooms purpose. This
time three engravings were found, each one identical to the first. Deducing the key to be the
same for this room as the last, Lucia, Belgarion, and Reginald each traced the symbols in different
sequences until the wall opened to the south. The party found three more room like this. Each one
devoid of any trappings, save the small engravings, and each one required the proper sequence to
advance. As they progressed, Drax couldn t help but notice it seemed to be getting cooler. While it
was certainly a welcome change from the suffocating jungle heat, the chill didn t feel entirely
natural. Draxes scales began to tingle and he sensed they were approaching something completely
unholy as the final wall moved

The Dominance of Microsoft’s Xbox 360
The Dominance of Microsoft s Xbox 360
The video game market has slowly and steadily created a larger presence for itself in the
entertainment industry. The largest part of the market s recent growth (from 2005 to the present) is
undeniably due in part to the video game console created by Microsoft called the Xbox 360.
Microsoft was the first company to release what is called the current generation console, and
successfully beat Sony out of the gate. Prior to the release of the Xbox 360, Sony had dominated the
market with their console, the PlayStation 2. It is because of Microsoft s ongoing innovations to
enhance player interactivity and large game catalogue (especially those with record breaking sales)
is why they are the dominant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Kubba) This amount of money is unheard of when it comes to music or film. In comparison,
the top most grossing films are Avatar and Titanic. (Internet Movie Database) The film Avatar
earned $760 million within three years, and Titanic earned $658 million within six years, all of
which are comprised of film earnings at the box office and home video recordings like DVD or
Blu ray. The technology created by Microsoft for their Xbox 360 is the first of its kind. A perfect
example is a device called the Kinect. This device utilizes a microphone and multiple cameras to
enhance gamers experience, especially for game titles like Dance Central. Kinect utilizes motion
detection in order to spot interaction and display it on the screen accordingly. Another function for
the device is voice recognition. Rather than using a controller, the player can simply speak the
commands and the Xbox will do the said action. But the use for the Kinect has also extended far
beyond its gaming origins, spurring advances in medical treatment. (Knight) Using the Kinect for
real world applications, including making medical diagnoses or three dimensional modeling was an
unintended side effect of the Kinect when it was released. At first, Microsoft seemed hesitant to
allow people to use the Kinect for something outside of gaming, but soon it was apparent that it
could be used

My problem revolves around homeless veterans and how they are at a higher risk for suicide than
those who are not homeless. Several factors relate to the notable risk for veteran suicide including
health factors, substance and alcohol abuse, stressful life events, social isolation and psychiatric
disorders. Veterans who are homeless show higher rates for these significant factors including
psychiatric disorders, alcohol and drug abuse and chronic medical conditions. There is a correlation
between veteran homelessnessand suicide and several disciplinary perspectives relate to it. The most

According to Donovan, S and Shinseki, E.K. of the American Journal of Public Health, the
suggestion to combat this issue is to reenforce intervention strategies of certain government
organizations that work and to funnel federal resources to those strategies (Donovan, 2013). One of
the main factors for why people are homeless is due to the mental and physical illness and
substance abuse. Effective intervention strategies must be achieved in order to combat
homelessness and to ensure veterans are receiving aid they deserve. An example of improving
intervention would be to increase investment in effective, evidence based programs utilizing such
as the Housing First model created by the VA which helps assist veterans with access to health care,
employment and other supportive services that promote long term housing stability, reduce

Alopecia Areata
The challenges of elementary, middle, and high school accumulate and progress through the years.
One of them being social status and appearance. I for one, had fallen to the bottom of the totem
pole. I was considered a bulls eye, targeted by those that wished to shower me with arrows in the
form of harsh words and taunts. I was an outcast, rejected from the norm. Although laborious, I
climbed up the totem thanks to achieve strength and confidence. At the time of raging hormones
and every student is painstakingly attempting to find their calling; it comes effortless for some,
however not so much for others. In the fifth grade I was diagnosed with an auto immune disease

I grew tired of being homely, of the arrows, of being punctured with words that were, supposedly,
meant to leave me unharmed. The condensed circle of friends and family I developed, constantly
insisted that I am no less than an extraordinary human being. They continued the pestering, yet I
stood unyielding convinced I would never be better than the dirt that s walked on. It must have
been their persistence that led to the realization: beautiful things grow within the dirt, relying on its
nutrients to grow strong and great. I was more valuable as a human than a target, yet instead, a
fighter. In order to win against the enemies, to no longer be a victim, I needed to first fight the
battle within my own mind before progressing to tackle outer defenses. Confidence has been the
inflexible trait to fix, rather than the higher resilient features such as activeness or originality. In
time, the laborious work and constant battles paid off. I had learned to have my own confidence,
trust myself, and notice an inner beauty, despite the fact it had taken an autoimmune disease,

The Communicative Approach
The present Unit of Work could be framed pedagogically into The Communicative Language
Teaching Approach (CLT), together with the Project Work and the CEFRLВ
ґs Action Oriented
Approach. The Communicative Approach emerged at the end of 1960s and early 1970s when a
series of circumstances, motivated by the emerging society, evidenced the necessity of adapting the
language teaching learningprocess to the new contextual demands. Until then, the Situational
Language Teaching, widely extended, and other teaching approaches in the field had centred on the
mastery of structures. However, they had run its course since it became clear the necessity to focus
on the functional and communicative potential of a language (Widdowson, 1978). As language...

Autism Spectrum Assessment
Proper and applicable assessment measures are the foundation to evidence based assessments. For
psychologists, it is critical to choose the best assessment tools that can provide the most reliable and
valid measures to give accurate suggestions about the most relevant intervention procedures.
Application of psychometrically valid tools and significant data assembly is decisive for optimal
intervention at the early stages of the diagnosis of the AutismSpectrum Disorder. Over the past
twenty years, researchers on Autism have made notable findings in comprehending prevalence rates
and creating accurate assessments to gather current diagnostic criterion. A significant increase in
the prevalence rate of ASD has led researchers to make further inquiries about the precision of the
tests used to assist in the diagnosis of autism.
The Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Second Edition (CARS 2) is a 15 item rating scale used to
identify children with autism and differentiating them from those with other developmental
disabilities such as avoidant personality disorder. It is evidence based substantiated and supplies
succinct and quantifiable ratings from direct behavioral observation. The original version of

The Postal System As A Method Of Communication
There are three separate theories available which can be identified that could be used to confirm
that an enforceable agreement has been reached between parties using the postal system as a
method of communication. These are, the information theory, whereby the offeror notifies the
offeree that the letter of acceptance has been received. The receipt theory, which assumes a
contract has been created on the receipt of a letter of acceptance and the dispatch theory, known
also as the postal rule which confirms that a contract has been entered into at the point in time that
the letter of acceptance is posted. Clearly, it is essential that when contracts are created using the
postal system as a means of communication it must possible to determine at what point the
agreement becomes legally enforceable. When using the postal system there is an inevitable risk
that communications could be lost or delayed which, but for the postal rule would create
uncertainty for the party who is providing acceptance of the offer. Therefore, unless the offeror
had prescribed a specific or alternative method of communication it is the dispatch theory that is
applied in English contract law regarding the acceptance of agreements that are made using the
postal system, this confirms certainty in the mind of the offeree. This rule became established in
English contract law as the result of the decision made in Adams v Lindsell (1818) 106 ER 250.
This was subsequently confirmed in The

The Influence Of Learners First Language
The influence of learners first language (L1) plays a significant role in learning a second
language (L2). In general, numerous studies have been investigating L1 transfer. In specific, the
influence of Arabic, more specifically Saudi Arabic, in learning English has been examined to
demonstrate the native language transfer in L2 learning (Binturki, 2008; Grami and
Alzughaibi, 2012; among others). Based on the influence of L1 and universal markedness
(things that are present in a small number of languages), Eckman (1977) proposes the
Markedness Differential Hypothesis (MDH). It helps predicting errors that L2 learners will
have based on a comparison between L1 and L2 and universal markedness. The aim of the
present study is to examine to what extent the MDH can account for mispronunciation of word
final voiced stops by Saudi Arabian learners of English. The results of this study contradict the
MDH. Despite the fact that both Saudi Arabic and English have voiced stops word finally, the
Saudi Arabian learners did not produce the voiced stops in coda positions correctly. The subjects
tended mostly to either substitute or devoiced final voiced stops. This paper will start with a
brief discretion of the word final voiced stops (/b d g/) in Saudi Arabic and English. Then, an
explanation about the MDH is involved followed by the section of data source and analysis, and
finally conclusion. Review of Literature English and Arabic Stops In this section, I present a brief

  • 2. My Life, The Arts, And World Events Everyone strives to do better and succeed, why would people want to do worse? The key to succeeding may be different across unique people, but a trait known as grit was introduced by a psychologist named Angela Duckworth in a TedTalk, ...One characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. It wasn t social intelligence, it wasn t good looks, physical health, and it wasn t IQ: It was grit. Grit, in my words, is the capability of failing or persevering through difficulties and still being able to succeed in the end. Whether you are or not familiar with grit, it has the potential to change lives, and examples of this trait are shown in my personal life, the arts, and world events. To begin with, the topic of grit can be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I also found the time to make some new friends, where we would celebrate after a great run through or march together through the countless and repetitive sets. This grit helped me to persevere after it seemed like I was on the verge of quitting, and I followed through on my commitments. Not only is this trait seen in my own personal experiences, but it also flourishes in the arts. Furthermore, the trait of grit can be connected to a film named The Martian which is part of the arts. This movie, originally a novel published by Andy Weir, was released in 2015 starring Matt Damon (Mark Watney) and directed by Ridley Scott. The setting already starts on Mars when Mark, the botanist of his crew, have set up base and are collecting rock samples. They see a massive dust storm approaching and they attempt to evacuate from the planet. In this storm, Watney is blown away and is isolated from the rest of the group, and the rest of the team assumes he is dead and take off without him. However, the next day, Watney startles awake makes it back to base and realizes he has been left alone; he is certain he is going to die. The lab setup is only able to last 31 days, he can run out of food, and if the oxygenator breaks he will suffocate, if the water reclaimer breaks he will die of thirst, and it will take at least four years for another trip to Mars where his crew or NASA can save him. • 3. Louis Berkof Introduction of the New Testament Summary of introduction to the new testament Louis Berkof by systematically addressing the origin of the Gospel and the Epistles of the New Testament, their content, characteristics, authorship, composition, and canonical significance, Takes on the difficult undertaking of ensuring that the New Testament is accurately understood within what he perceives is the correct historical setting. Berkhof primarily intended this book for his students at Calvin Theological Seminary where he taught for nearly 30 years. Introduction to the New Testament incorporates the research and labors of many past scholars, and church Fathers, and presents it in such a way as to make Introduction to the New Testament a diverse... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In defending his point against those that deny that the gospel written by inspiration of God, Berkhof flagrantly proclaims, Over against this position we hold that the Gospels were written by men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that they are therefore absolutely trustworthy and authoritative accounts of the life of our Lord. To defend his position Berkhof list but a few passages from scriptures that support his position. As for those that admit the inspiration of the Old Testament Prophets, but deny that the Apostles were inspired because they did not use the expression Thus Saith the Lord or did not observe the characteristic phenomena that accompanied the inspiration of the prophets, Berkhof gives three points in distinguishing the inspiration of the prophets from the inspiration of the Apostles. o In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit took possession of the Prophets sometime suppressing their personality, while in the New Testament the Holy Spirit aboded in the Church and first the Apostle using them as instruments to produce His revelation. o For the Old Testament Prophets the Holy Spirit was an external Power that impelled them to prophesy. • 5. Founding Fathers Hypocritical The founding fathers may have been smart but they were lacking of important human qualities. Compared to some of the world leaders we have today, that s no question. Despite being that smart, you would think they would try not to be hypocritical, when writing one of the most important document in the history of the United States. The constitution s preamble is hypocritical, it was then and it is now, but more so in 1789. The Preamble was hypocritical in 1789 because of the votingsystem that the US had, when the Preamble says Insure domestic Tranquility , and when the Preamble says We the people. The founding fathers brought in a system of voting for their leader, this system was very corrupt at the time of 1789, and made the preamble look even more hypocritical. The major reason that this made the Preamble look bad is because the Preamble said We the people, the word people, means ... group of human beings (men or women or children) collectively The main word in the definition is human, this means everyone. The last time I checked, only rich property owning white guys could vote in the US states in 1789, excluding Virginia where women could vote. There are also other reasons for the voting system making the Preamble hypocritical, like the fact that the Preamble says they will secure the Blessings of Liberty for ourselves... this is hypocritical because the voting system only let some people secure their blessings, like bankers and merchants, the other people ... • 6. Essay about Employee Turnover and Retention Employee Turnover an Observation When discussing employee turnover and retention the immediate reaction is to view turnover as a negative and retention as a positive. Psychologists have been researching and documenting their findings on the subject for over 50 years, mostly focusing on why people leave organizations (Staw, 1980, p. 253). One cannot deny there are organizational costs due to an employee s departure; however, it would be naГЇve not to recognize there are benefits as well. Organizations must weigh the costs of turnover, recognize the benefits, and strive to find a balance. There is no debate that employee turnover results in some amount of accountable monetary expense. Additionally, there are expenses that are difficult... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shuffling all the necessary paperwork when employees are out processed and in processed, tasking staff to organize and conduct hiring committees thereby pulling them away from their primary duties has accountable costs. If turnover is relatively high even more costs can be associated with organizations needing additional staff to specialize in employee recruitment and selection (Staw, 1980, p. 255). Costs to staff vacant positions are dependent on the amount of recruitment needed. If the labor market is tight, finding qualified applicants may be difficult leaving the position vacant longer or requiring the qualifications required to be reevaluated. Conversely, in a strong labor market the organization may receive hundreds of applications from qualified individuals (Staw, 1980, p. 255). When considering the cost of replacing employees, training is another consideration. Depending on the complexity of the position, training may be formal, informal, or undefined. When professional training is required there is a direct expense and an additional cost associated with lost business while the training is being conducted (Dalton Todor, 1982, p. 215). Typically new hires for complex positions have already completed formal training at their own expense (doctors, engineers, programmers, etc.). Informal training is generally provided by co workers. The length of the training is categorized by the complexity of the tasks. When positions are undefined, the new hire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the past, museums do not exist as the representation of recreational places. For example, art museums are always reserved and high class places where are not comfortable to just step in within casual style. On the other hand, history museums usually leave an impression of depth and seriousness since what I see are left by ancestors. Although both of them are the advanced resource for study, they are not locations to ease the tension. Nevertheless, Exploratorium is totally different, a combination of education and recreation. In the movie Lion , a big part that helped the main character find his way was through technology, using media, trade, and transportation as the main factors. In this film, the producers and directors took a true story about a little boy s unfortunate mishap that turned around and changed his life. As he went into his adulthood he used technology and transportation to find where he came from, and through globalization it abled him to find his way back home. Throughout the movie the train symbolized the transportation factor of globalization. The train was there in the beginning when the boy lost his way and, was there at the end when he found it. In the modern world, trains, planes, cars, and trucks is what we use to travel or transport goods. Yes, sometimes we can lose our path but transportation also helps us find our way back. • 11. The Failing Discourse of the US Government Essay In the United States, perpetual conflict is most noticeable in the political system. The cause of the conflict is not that we have a two party system but rather that the parties are divided not by ideology, but by identifying themselves as the antithesis of the other party. This kind of mentality hinders the progression of ideas and prevents social and cultural growth. This is not a violent conflict over land or over religion; it is a conflict over the very soul of the United States. By identifying themselves as antitheses, they leave no room for growth in compromise or collaboration. Palliating this dilemma is extremely difficult and differs greatly from the typical conflict because they are already supposedly representatives of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whether these allegations are true or not, this type of mudslinging deflates the citizenry s belief that the government is able to get things done and is working in the best interests of the people. Thus, government rhetoric is destructive to the unity of the US because of its polarity, which pits Americans against one another. So, how does a nation over come these issues? One possibility is to eliminate parties all together, but this probably would not change anything. It would only push the colluding into the shadows. The only real solution is to stop the polarization by having politicians realize they are actually on the same side and must stop fighting each other. This can be done through conflict transformation, but there must also be disincentives to using inflammatory rhetoric and colluding. These events are prevalent in ideological disagreements like abortion rights and in both practical disagreements like healthcare, and only through conflict transformation can there be any movement in the stagnant US political system. The public debate over abortion in the United States has intensified since the Supreme Court s decision in Roe v. Wade. Advocates on each side of the debate often hint that we must select between two stark options: Pro life and Pro choice. Strong pro life advocates claim that abortion is immoral (except perhaps in a few cases) because the fetus is a human being from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Oedipus Essay Hans Rockwell 8/26/17 Question 1 Question 1.) One of the responses people usually have about Oedipus is if he really deserved the fate that he ended up with. It s not his fault that Jocasta and Laius tried to outsmart fate and dispose of him. In trying to run from this prophecy, did he really do anything any other person, given the culture, wouldn t have done? Is Oedipus a victim of fate or is he responsible for the choices he makes? What does Sophocles suggest? What do you think? Use specific references from the text in your response. It is sort of an iffy question when we are trying to figure out whether or not Oedipus ... There are definitely two arguments on whether or not Oedipus had fallen to fate or made his own decisions, but if you think about it, the prophecy stated literally everything that was going to happen, and maybe it would not had happened if Oedipus did not seek out everything because the prophecy only unfolded when he began to venture out and look for the problem trying to solve his own problems. Him doing this unraveled something much worse and is what led him to his banishment, so if you think about it, maybe fate did bring him to this terrible ending, but how can we be for sure because he did make these decisions himself. Jocasta and Laius were the two to blame for believing in such a thing and leaving their child to die a terrible death, only to come back and have the prophecy happen anyways. King Laius sought out the prophecy and found out that their son (if they had one), would eventually kill him.

What steps can managers take to prevent core competencies becoming core rigidities? In today s world competition among firms becomes globalized and more intense. In order to become superiorly competitive, companies should enhance its competencies in a way that will allow them to achieve dominant position in a market. One way of accomplishing it is by development of core competencies. What is important here is the managers perception of the environmental dynamism that providesthe basis for their ability to identify the need for changes and extend those changes when necessary. Patrick Latham Columbia Southern University Abstract There are a multitude of laws and regulations that provide guidance to managers and employees as to what their rights and responsibilities are in the workplace. These laws and regulations originate from all three branches of government and enforcement occurs at the local, state, and federal level. As firefighters, it is incumbent upon us to be aware of these laws and regulations and to be aware that we can be held civilly as well as criminally responsible for our actions. The EEOC investigated and attempted to resolve the matter without filing a lawsuit, but the fire district was adamant in their denial that any discrimination took place against the firefighters (Long Island Newsday, 2008). Prior to trial, the Easton s Neck Fire District decided to settle the case with the EEOC and agreed to make retroactive payments to the firefighters. There is no reason given as to why the fire district decided to settle but even a cursory examination of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) shows that the district would not have prevailed in court. This federal law plainly states that workers age 40 and over are protected from age discrimination and by denying pension or retirement benefits based on age the fire district was in violation (EEOC, 2009). It included a vast array of contents taught for the purpose of teacher training and others interested in education. Educational sociology is by definition a discipline which considers education within the purview of needs and values of society, it starts with the premise that education is a social fact, a process and an institution, having a social function and being determined socially. These kind of tendencies could be found in earlier educationists like Plato, the father of the philosophy of education, who had a deep insight into the social function of education, and most of the great educationists, especially Comenius, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Fichte and Dewey explored the relations between education and society. However, since Herbart established pedagogy as a systematic theory, the main trend of educational theory for a long time has been individualistic, in that it took the completion of an individual being as the aim of education, with teaching seen as a deliberate and planned process of formal instruction. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, in opposition to this individualistic theory, a pedagogy emerged which held that the nature of education should be considered from a ... • 25. Essay on the Transformation of Beowulf The Transformation of Beowulf In the length of the poem, Beowulf goes from abandoned child to gallant warrior to King. This transformation, expressed in the tone and content of the poem, shows the importance of the relationship between lord and thane and expresses the ultimate value of that connection. From the difference in battle scenes to Beowulf s speeches, it is clear that he has gone from a somewhat self loving hero to a selfless king. Within this change he also goes from serving a lord to becoming a lord, and in that way the poem shows us the importance of both sides of the relationship. Furthermore, Wiglaf enters the final battle to help him, showing the respect that he has earned from his thanes and that they are now willing to give their lives for him. After the final battle there is another expression of the importance of loyalty in their culture. That is when the thanes that left Beowulf came back behind shields (2850). It is the ultimate disgrace that they left their lord, because the lord is their source of livelihood and a thane is expected to willingly give his life for his provider. Wiglaf sums up this tie when he says, A warrior will sooner / die than live a life of shame (2890), meaning that the bond between lord and thane is so strong that it is better to die than to disgrace that relationship. The tone of the poem is also an indicator of the changes in Beowulf. In the first two battles there is an epic tone. Beowulf is gallant and described in a very physical sense. He is adorned in jewels by king Hrothgar and has the utmost confidence. He also has no one relying on him as a thane would a lord. By the final scene the tone is less bounding and more melancholy. Beowulf is less confident, and worries more about his people than his own reputation. The sadness in the tone also reflects the despair of Beowulf s kinsmen when he has died. • 50. The Postal System As A Method Of Communication There are three separate theories available which can be identified that could be used to confirm that an enforceable agreement has been reached between parties using the postal system as a method of communication. These are, the information theory, whereby the offeror notifies the offeree that the letter of acceptance has been received. The receipt theory, which assumes a contract has been created on the receipt of a letter of acceptance and the dispatch theory, known also as the postal rule which confirms that a contract has been entered into at the point in time that the letter of acceptance is posted. Clearly, it is essential that when contracts are created using the postal system as a means of communication it must possible to determine at what point the agreement becomes legally enforceable. When using the postal system there is an inevitable risk that communications could be lost or delayed which, but for the postal rule would create uncertainty for the party who is providing acceptance of the offer. Therefore, unless the offeror had prescribed a specific or alternative method of communication it is the dispatch theory that is applied in English contract law regarding the acceptance of agreements that are made using the postal system, this confirms certainty in the mind of the offeree. In specific, the influence of Arabic, more specifically Saudi Arabic, in learning English has been examined to demonstrate the native language transfer in L2 learning (Binturki, 2008; Grami and Alzughaibi, 2012; among others). Based on the influence of L1 and universal markedness (things that are present in a small number of languages), Eckman (1977) proposes the Markedness Differential Hypothesis (MDH).
