Editor's Notes
What is personal branding?
Personal branding is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands.[1] The term is thought to have been first used and discussed in a 1997 article by Tom Peters.[2]
Note that a brand is not what you think you are, but how other people see you.
Why brand you?
A first impression is usually made within 30 seconds, however studies have shown that it can take upto 21 new interactions to change that first impression.
In this quickly evolving digital age, where sometimes we’re nog even present when someone gett their first impression of us, Personal Branding is the key to making sure the REAL YOU gets seen the way you want to be seen.
You are what Google says you are…
What do other people think when they see your name?
What would you like other people to think when they see your name?
Know yourself: be honest. What are your strengths, weaknesses, where can you stand out?
Show yourself: pick online platforms
Grow yourself: start engaging, building content
Social Media and Personal Branding
With all social media sites allowing us, the general public, to not only control, but participate in the content we see. It is up to us to set ourselves apart from our competitors and colleagues!
Use fully public settings
Full name viewable
Customized background with a logo/pic/links
Use same photography on all publice sites
Listen & learn
Start by finding people and topics that are in your field / that are of your interest
Use fully public settings
Optimize keywords for future paths/goals and summarize yourself by framing your existing experience and skills
100% completion
Import ALL your contacts and invite to connect
Customize your headline (vs. default “current job” title)
Customize weblinks and make it actionable: ‘follow me on…’
Join Groups and listen in. Ask and answer relevant questions
Give reccomendations
Post status updates
Use same name and photography on all public sites
My advice would be to keep that one private, this is about your personal preferences. Unless of course relevant for your job or industry.
