Personal Statement

I have always been interested in Media from a young age from watching the news, reading
newspapers, and going online reading about recent happenings in the world. I have always
been interested in writing about news and celebrities as this is one of my favourite pass
times reading about celebrities and what they get up to. The course I have chosen to do at
university is Journalism due to the fact it allows me to write about social happenings which
really interests me.

Throughout my life I have found myself writing about subjects from essays to simply letters
to people. I have always been interested in writing due to the fact we get to give out our
own interpretation of things but to also inform the world of what’s going on. I get very
involved in writing stories and like to put a lot of detail into them due to the fact it makes
the story more entertaining to read. I have done this from an early age because I find
writing something down is much more convenient to put into words then having to say it
out loud.

In journalism I would love to be able to write about celebrities due to the fact this is one of
the main reasons I would like to pursue a career in journalism. I like to read the Daily mail
online especially the celebrity articles, because I just find it very interesting to see what
privileged people get up to. (celebrity culture is such part of our society)

Id like to think that from doing well in my English GCSE’s in school helped me decided what I
wanted to take at university. I’ve always know since I wanted to do something with writing
because I always use to enjoy English and find it fairly easy. English was the one lesson I
would look forward to and find it enjoyable when we were told to write our own story’s or
analysis pictures. I use to do a lot of revision for English which rubbed off in my GCSE’s
where I ended up getting two B’s which I thinks very good. In my coursework which required
a lot of writing ended up in me getting multiple A’s which I was very pleased with. Also in
high school I picked drama which was the only media related subject our school had to
offer. In drama it required me to essays my performances giving my opinion which I
struggled with at first but after re-writing them a numerous of times I began to see where I
was going wrong and work on my mistakes.

In college I then choose media A level film which also required a lot of writing, however I
didn’t enjoy these two subjects due to the fact I wanted them to be combined so that’s why
after a year I picked media BTEC. Media BTEC for me has given me a great understanding
about each aspect about media. It has also required me to write essays and analysis texts. I
think my choosing BTEC media has given me much more independence then A levels and I
think that it is much better suited for me as a person. For one of our assignments we have
to write an 1,500 word essay on any subject to do with media and its impact on the world. I
choose to write about ‘women in media’ and how they are portrayed. I had fun writing
about this due to the fact I had to conduct my own research about the topic and read the
opinions of other people and their view on it. It also made me realise just how much media
has an impact on the world and women in particular. I would love to do more work like this
because it gave you more of a independence role which University is known for. I have
done very well in media BTEC and would like to pursue a career in media.

In my spare time I like to read about celebrities as ive mentioned before due to the fact it’s a
general interest of mine and I enjoy reading about my favourite celebrities. I also enjoy
travelling and would like to do at one point in my life and write about didn’t cultures and
what they have to offer. Me and my friends always find ourselves planning journeys to
places all over the world in order to have fun and just see what the place is like. I think by
doing this has made me much more independent and gave me that confidence I need in
order to be a journalist.

Media is becoming such a big part of our lives and due to the fact Media City is right next to
where I live I would like to take full advantage of it and take journalism at university.
