Resilience: the key requirement of a [big] [data] architecture - StampedeCon...StampedeCon
From the StampedeCon 2015 Big Data Conference: There is an adage, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” . When developing systems the adage can be taken a step further, “If you fail to plan FOR FAILURE, you plan to fail”. At Huffington post data moves between a number of systems to provide statistics for our technical, business, and editorial teams. Due to the mission-critical nature of our data, considerable effort is spent building resiliency into processes.
This talk will focus on designing for failure. Some material will focus understanding the traits of specific distributed systems such as message queues or NoSQL databases and what are the consequences for different types of failures. While other parts of the presentation will focus on how systems and software can be designed to make re-processing batch data simple, or how to determine what failure mode semantics are important for a real time event processing system.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
My true passion lies in motivating and inspiring others, especially our youth, to believe
that we are all capable of achieving enormous success in our lives, no-matter what our
educational background or personal circumstances.
Although we all have unique characteristics that differ from person to person, I have complete
confidence that every individual has inherent natural gifts which can be developed to maximum
potential.
Ordinary motivational speaking on its own will not stimulate full development; therefore, my
approach focuses rather on motivational workshops and follow-up sessions, so that I can see for
myself how individual learners are progressing.
This personal philosophy of mine began sprouting from my early childhood years and gradually
developed into a reliable and functional structured system, which has been acknowledged as
such by countless individuals, mostly scholars, whom I have successfully tutored, motivated,
and inspired to achieve their maximum potential.
SCHOLASTIC YEARS
My school years were characterized by competitive challenges on several levels, both on
academic and sport levels.
I was barely 5-years old when I completed the 50-meter sprint contest in 8 seconds. I was
promptly awarded two trophies for this victory. I can still clearly recall that specific event and
believe it played a vital role in my mind-set that determination and self-confidence are the
secret to life’s successes.
3. Personal Profile: Christelle Moolman Page 3
I was eventually awarded School Honouree Colours as well as SA-Colours in gymnastics and
athletics after breaking several records. I attributed these accomplishments to self-confidence
and motivation.
Besides sport I also developed affection for writing while at High School. Last-mentioned ability
motivated me to compose prose and to establish a school newspaper. I also became actively
involved with organised school debates, choir singing, and ‘eisteddfods’ where a combination of
literature, music and performing arts formed and integral part of the proceedings.
I received my Matric Exemption Certificate in 1982, from D.F. Malan High School Bellville.
Although I excelled academically my own personal circumstances where of such a nature
that I was unable to pursue the path of higher tertiary education. Much of the skills and
knowledge I thus possess now was acquired through my own efforts.
JOURNALISM
I performed duties as a journalist for the following Afrikaans newspapers: Die
Transvaler, Beeld, Bronkhorstspruit News, Rapport, and Africa News which I helped
establish.
I gained considerable knowledge in various research methods and the gathering of information
while working in this field. Besides journalism my duties in this industry also involved
marketing as well as the managing of classified advertisements, where I was later promoted as
Head of the Classified Advertisement Department.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
In am keenly involved with the activities of the “Welknown Christian Centre” whose
philosophy is to, "To equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may
be built up." - Ephesians 4:12.
I wish to emphasize that the religious beliefs of others do not influence my interaction
with other community members, and that I respect all religious beliefs.
Highlights of my personal involvement in community service include the following:
Outreach programmes in African countries such as Uganda and Malawi.
Involvement with Orphanage Homes in the town of Klerksdorp where I managed special
projects, among others, a project which we called “Weekend Parents”.
Forster Care in “Jacaranda” orphanage. - (I personally cared for two orphan boys, who
lived in my home for two years.)
Involvement with sponsorships of “Rugby Boys” on school level between Grades 7 and
10.
Involvement with sponsorship in Namibia – (Oct. 2011).
(Learners were failing the Grade 10 school system in Namibia. After the EML programme

was presented to them, the class percentage increased to 75%, and that was only after
their first exam!)
Involvement with sponsorship at the Ramokoka Primary School, in the North West
province of South Africa – (April 2013).
Photographs of the two last-mentioned events can be viewed on my web site at the following
link: http://www.learn2learn.co.za/photo-gallery.html
My passion to help other children was deeply heightened when my only son passed away,
during the year 2004.
My Passion Is Our Youth!
THE PARAGON GENERATION (TPG)
Although The Paragon Generation was officially established in 1994, my enolvemnet with the
founders of the company commenced three years earlier.
1991 - EDUTECH MASTER LEARNER (EML)
In 1991 I procured a Business License to market the Edutech Master Learner Programme,
known simply as EML for short.
(This Integrated Skills Development Programme has been adapted to empower Learners to be
effective in both formal and informal learning environments. It is ideally suited for empowering
Learners from Grade 4 to Tertiary Level.)
Within a period of 5 years I was the top marketer of the EML Programme, countrywide.
5. Personal Profile: Christelle Moolman Page 5
I continued promoting the EML Programme for the next 7 years. Marketing accomplishments
included the following:
Motivating and inspiring school learners and their parents by arranging special school
projects.
Organising and lecturing afterhours at so-called, “Parent Evenings”.
Designing and implementing a practical Skills-Analysis Profile for learners.
Compiling and writing my own motivational material, the majority of which is now
presented in my own organisation – (TPG).
A schematic presentation of Supporting Skills offered by the EML Programme:
1998 - SCHOOL COORDINATOR (TPG)
In 1998 I was appointed as the official School Coordinator for TPG which granted me the
flexibility to personally meet and liaison with several School Principals, including Governing
Bodies.
1999 - LICENSE MARKETER (TPG)
In 1999 I officially became part of TPG’s License Marketing Team. I continued to research, refine
and enhance exiting marketing material, while providing motivational business and marketing-
related training to up-and-coming entrepreneurs and business owners. My new role granted
me the opportunity to broaden my horizons in the fields of personal development and
education.
6. Personal Profile: Christelle Moolman Page 6
I confidently entered the corporate market, with my first assignment involving the successful
training of apprentices at Tutuka Eskom and Midrand Eskom, where the focus was on the
practical application of techniques and skills in the workplace.
2006 – OWNERSHIP OF TPG
In 2006 my husband and I took ownership of The Paragon Generation organization in
South Africa.
From here we evolved The Paragon Generation to become the best organization in South Africa
in personal development and education, hence the reason why we today proudly use the
following slogan:
HOME OF LEARNING HOW TO LEARN IN SOUTH AFRICA
ADULT TRAINING COURSES
I design motivational workshops in accordance with organizational needs.
All adult training courses are customized
to accommodate the diverse standards
and ethics of various departments within
the organization. These include:
First impressions.
What is perception?
I am a leader!
Multiple hats we wear.
How can I change it?
Arms of compassion.
Brain profiles (who am I on
paper?)
7. Personal Profile: Christelle Moolman Page 7
What is the perception?
Many of us define ourselves by how much we have. In a society that gives more value to those
who have more, we find ourselves constantly pressured to relentlessly acquire more and better
things.
We easily intertwine our identity with our possessions.
CONCLUDING REMARKS
I believe – my 25 years involvement with the various activities of The Paragon Generation
has fully qualified me to provide a competent and supportive service in the fields of
Personal Development and Education.
I am my greatest competitor
and strive to give my 100% at
all times. I do not believe that
anything less than my best is
acceptable.
