Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation (KDSF) operates 7 Down Syndrome centers in Malaysia that provide early intervention programs for children with Down Syndrome from infancy through age 6. The idea for a facility to help children with Down Syndrome originated in 1988 from the Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur. The first center opened in 1989 with 35 children and has since expanded to multiple locations across Malaysia. KDSF aims to educate children with Down Syndrome and strengthen their physical abilities through specialized therapy programs before they enter public special needs schools.

• Pusat ini merupakan salah satu pusat pemulihan dalam
komuniti bukan kerajaan.
• Tujuan : membantu murid-murid SD mendapat
pelajaran serta latihan kemahiran hidup sebelum
mereka dihantar ke sekolah khas kerajaan.

3. Sejarah
• The idea of a facility to help children with Down
Syndrome was first mooted in 1988 by a group of
Kiwanians from the Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur.
Down Syndrome was decided upon because a survey
showed that there was no organisation to represent or
help children with Down Syndrome at that time. It was
through this initial discussion that the first Down
Syndrome Centre was born. Located at 59, Jalan
Gasing, it started with 35 children with Down Syndrome
on September 1989. The centre was subsequently
declared open by Datuk Dr. Siti Hasmah, the wife of the
Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir
Mohamed.

4. Sejarah
• To ensure that what was set up would be properly
managed, the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation (
KDSF ) was formed in 1990. The Kiwanis Down
Syndrome Foundation is a non-profit organization with
tax-exempt status. It is committed to the welfare of
children with Down Syndrome, its main focus being the
education of these children below 6 years old.
• The KDSF now manages 7 Down Syndrome Centres in
Malaysia – at Petaling Jaya, Johore Bahru, Klang,
Seremban, Melaka, Kota Kinabalu and Kulai. These
Centres implement the Early Intervention Programme,
a Special Needs Education Programme using the
Robert Dellar’s Curriculum.

5. (ISP) – 2 months to 2
years old
• For infants from as young as 2 months to 2 years old.
This programme is used to strengthen infant’s
physical weaknesses (such as low muscle tone)
through physiotherapy and occupational therapy so
that child can achieve early goals, to be able to crawl;
to explore and manipulate objects; to have better
reflexes; memory and sound imitation skills.

6. Toddler Programme
(TOD) – 2 to 3 years old
• For toddlers from 2 to 3 years old, TOD builds up on the
child’s skills achieved so far, to help him or her move on
the learning path. However more emphasis is now
given to other skills development such as early
language, pre-academic, story telling, music and art
appreciation, all within an environment of fun and play.
