When people speak, they produce sequences of words. When people listen or read, they also deal with sequences of words. Speakers systematically organize those sequences of words into phrases, clauses, and sentences.
The study of syntax involves discovering the cues that languages provide that show how words in sentences relate to one another.
The study of syntactic parsing involves discovering how comprehenders use those cues to determine how words in sentences relate to one another during the process of interpreting sentence.
Parsing means to breaking down a sentence into its component parts so that the meaning of the sentence can be understood.
This can either be the category of words (Nouns, Pronouns, verbs, adjectives. Etc.)
Or other elements such as verbs tense (present, past, future)
In a phrase structure tree, the labels, like NP, VP, and S, are called nodes and the connections between the different nodes form branches.
The patterns of nodes and branches show how the words in the sentence are grouped together to form phrases and clauses.

This document discusses using a pedagogical framework called DiAL-e to analyze comments from a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on archaeology to determine if the comments provided evidence of learning. The author coded 525 comments from 12 steps of the MOOC using DiAL-e categories and calculated average DiAL-e scores. Correlations were found between higher DiAL-e scores and greater use of second person pronouns, positive emotion words, and informational language. However, no correlations were seen with measures of language complexity or social network density. The author concludes some linguistic markers may indicate pedagogical activity but more work is needed applying different frameworks to larger samples and using additional methods like interviews

An in-depth investigation of analytic relations by lexical researchers plays a prominent role in language learning and
teaching. The primary objective of the present study was to investigate the extent to which prediction regarding different
aspects of analytic relations impacts reading comprehension. The current research employed a quantitative approach
using standard multiple regression analysis. The study compared two language proficiency tests, namely an analytic
relations test and an academic reading comprehension test, among a total of 91 participants with a Bachelor of Business
Administration background and a total of 64 students with a Bachelor of Engineering background. The results of the
study showed that for both the Business and Engineering School students, the component-integral analytic relations
facet of vocabulary depth knowledge was not only the most statistically significant contributing predictor of academic
reading comprehension, but it also had the largest effect (i.e., statistically significant) in explaining the outcome
variable: Academic reading comprehension. By providing insights into the research gap, the present study suggests that
the analytic relations dimension of vocabulary knowledge has practical use for English language learners and English

Systemic Functional Linguistics was developed by M.A.K. Halliday
Systemic in SFL refers to a conception of language as a network of systems, or choices, for expressing meaning.
Functional refers to a concern for what language does and how it does it, in contrast to more structural approaches.

Language is functional
Language is construed as a practical means of expressing meanings rather than as an abstract set of relations.
Scholars who influenced Halliday:
Firth gave the notion of language as a set of systems and the importance of context in the interpretation of meaning.
Malinowski, with his emphasis on the relation between language and context, that is, his idea that you need to be in the particular context to understand the meaning of an utterance, and his notion of multiplicities of languages according to situations.
Whorf, who also insisted on how language was influenced by environment.
Hjelmslev, and his notion of language as the level of expression of a higher-level semiotic system.
The functional approach of the Prague school of linguistics, especially with regard to the textual metafunction.
SFL views grammar and lexis (vocabulary) as working together in making meanings: this combination is referred to as lexicogrammar.
According to SFL, meanings are expressed according to three broad metafunctions:
The ideational metafunction is concerned with things (real or imagined) in the world.
It is to do with actions, events and states (referred to as processes), for example, run, occur, be; participants in those processes, for example, he, she, man, car, weather, and the circumstances in which those processes occur, that is, how, when, and where.
Two components of ideational metafunction:
1. the experiential component (to do with experience and understanding of
the world)
2. the logical component (to do with logical relations)
The interpersonal function has to do with relationships between participants, not only in spoken texts, but also in written texts (with regard to how the writer interacts with the reader).
The textual metafunction relates to the construction of text, how it is held together and what gives it texture. The textual function is an enabling function, because the two other functions ‘depend on being able to build up sequences of discourse, organizing the discursive flow, creating cohesion and continuity as it moves along’ (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004: 30).

When people speak, they produce sequences of words. When people listen or read, they also deal with sequences of words. Speakers systematically organize those sequences of words into phrases, clauses, and sentences.
The study of syntax involves discovering the cues that languages provide that show how words in sentences relate to one another.
The study of syntactic parsing involves discovering how comprehenders use those cues to determine how words in sentences relate to one another during the process of interpreting sentence.
Parsing means to breaking down a sentence into its component parts so that the meaning of the sentence can be understood.
This can either be the category of words (Nouns, Pronouns, verbs, adjectives. Etc.)
Or other elements such as verbs tense (present, past, future)
In a phrase structure tree, the labels, like NP, VP, and S, are called nodes and the connections between the different nodes form branches.
The patterns of nodes and branches show how the words in the sentence are grouped together to form phrases and clauses.

This document discusses using a pedagogical framework called DiAL-e to analyze comments from a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on archaeology to determine if the comments provided evidence of learning. The author coded 525 comments from 12 steps of the MOOC using DiAL-e categories and calculated average DiAL-e scores. Correlations were found between higher DiAL-e scores and greater use of second person pronouns, positive emotion words, and informational language. However, no correlations were seen with measures of language complexity or social network density. The author concludes some linguistic markers may indicate pedagogical activity but more work is needed applying different frameworks to larger samples and using additional methods like interviews

An in-depth investigation of analytic relations by lexical researchers plays a prominent role in language learning and
teaching. The primary objective of the present study was to investigate the extent to which prediction regarding different
aspects of analytic relations impacts reading comprehension. The current research employed a quantitative approach
using standard multiple regression analysis. The study compared two language proficiency tests, namely an analytic
relations test and an academic reading comprehension test, among a total of 91 participants with a Bachelor of Business
Administration background and a total of 64 students with a Bachelor of Engineering background. The results of the
study showed that for both the Business and Engineering School students, the component-integral analytic relations
facet of vocabulary depth knowledge was not only the most statistically significant contributing predictor of academic
reading comprehension, but it also had the largest effect (i.e., statistically significant) in explaining the outcome
variable: Academic reading comprehension. By providing insights into the research gap, the present study suggests that
the analytic relations dimension of vocabulary knowledge has practical use for English language learners and English

SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS
SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS (SFL) and Register
Systemic Functional Linguistics was developed by M.A.K. Halliday
Systemic in SFL refers to a conception of language as a network of systems, or choices, for expressing meaning.
Functional refers to a concern for what language does and how it does it, in contrast to more structural approaches.
SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS (SFL)
Language is functional
Language is construed as a practical means of expressing meanings rather than as an abstract set of relations.
Scholars who influenced Halliday:
Firth gave the notion of language as a set of systems and the importance of context in the interpretation of meaning.
Malinowski, with his emphasis on the relation between language and context, that is, his idea that you need to be in the particular context to understand the meaning of an utterance, and his notion of multiplicities of languages according to situations.
Whorf, who also insisted on how language was influenced by environment.
Hjelmslev, and his notion of language as the level of expression of a higher-level semiotic system.
The functional approach of the Prague school of linguistics, especially with regard to the textual metafunction.
SFL views grammar and lexis (vocabulary) as working together in making meanings: this combination is referred to as lexicogrammar.
According to SFL, meanings are expressed according to three broad metafunctions:
The ideational metafunction is concerned with things (real or imagined) in the world.
It is to do with actions, events and states (referred to as processes), for example, run, occur, be; participants in those processes, for example, he, she, man, car, weather, and the circumstances in which those processes occur, that is, how, when, and where.
Two components of ideational metafunction:
1. the experiential component (to do with experience and understanding of
the world)
2. the logical component (to do with logical relations)
The interpersonal function has to do with relationships between participants, not only in spoken texts, but also in written texts (with regard to how the writer interacts with the reader).
The textual metafunction relates to the construction of text, how it is held together and what gives it texture. The textual function is an enabling function, because the two other functions ‘depend on being able to build up sequences of discourse, organizing the discursive flow, creating cohesion and continuity as it moves along’ (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004: 30).

In Knowledge Building (KB) research, the metadiscourse concept has been taken in use more in recent years. Still, the definitions seem to be quite simple and vague. In this paper, I therefore review how the metadiscourse concept is used in some selected research papers. By comparing these papers, I discuss the degree of similarities and differences in the use of the concept within the field. In addition, I propose a typology that includes both written and verbal metadiscourse and which may be relevant when analyzing knowledge building discourse.

An introduction to systemic functional linguistics

Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count With a computer program tool called Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) one can process text where each word in that text is compared with a dictionary file. These dictionary files are broken up by category (e.g. pronouns, social words, cognitive mechanisms, positive/negative emotion) and can show attentional focus, emotionality, social relationships, thinking styles, and individual differences (Tausczik & Pennebaker, 2010). This method gave me metrics by which to quantify progress amongst or regression amongst the class cohort. For instance, prepositions (e.g., to, with, above), words longer than six letters, and words that Tausczik and Pennebaker (2010) have categorized as cognitive mechanisms (e.g., cause, know, ought), are all indicative of more complex language
