This is the slideshow that was used during the CARL 2010 Conference at the Friday afternoon session called "People Make Research Guides" with presenters Jacqui, Jade and Kathlene.
I gave a one hour overview to librarians from NH about assessment. My approach to assessment focuses on collection of performance assessments, mapping session level outcomes to program outcomes, aggregating data by outcome, SHARING what you learn, and contributing to program level assessment. I plan for and organize assessment methods into “tiers” with tier one assessments capturing student development of information literacy from a variety of academic experiences, and tier two assessment methods capturing librarians contribution to students development of information literacy. One librarian asked me after the discussion: where should I begin, especially with limited access to students? My recommendation is always to start with what’s already being done. Where are students already being assessed? Look there and see what you can learn about the challenges students are having. Then create your plan, and “start small, but start” as Deb Gilchrist and other ACRL Immersion faculty always mantra.

Questioning the value and sustainability of librarian led research instruction sessions, as well as the librarian staffed reference desk, two librarians spear-headed the development of a student peer mentor training program to improve integration of information literacy across the curriculum and provide research and technology assistance at the library’s new student staffed Information Desk. During this session, student Research & Technology Fellows will share their experiences participating in the program and two librarians will share their experiences developing and managing the program through a self-paced, blended model of online modules in the Canvas course management system and face-to-face trainings

Presented at the Higher Education Colleges Association Conference (HECA) on April 19th in iBAT College Dublin. This presentation on based on doctoral research currently being undertaken in the Institute of Education in London. The presentation suggests that critical discussion should become the signature pedagogy of the MATL and it should be based on Brookfield and Preskill's 8 dispositions for critical discussion.

Howard University librarians Niketha McKenzie, Kimberly Prosper, and Adia Coleman share their strategy for helping students transition from the open web searching they are accustomed to, toward more rigorous, college-level research. They detail how they use Credo to support the concept of pre-search and build familiarity with research databases. By likening Credo to an “Academic Google,” they have been able to gain buy-in from students while demonstrating the value of authoritative resources. Students have reported feeling less frustrated by the research process, and faculty appreciate that the library is providing a guide that helps students perform better.

Promoting Open Access and Open Educational Resources to FacultyNASIG

Student debt is a compelling issue and many institutions are investigating solutions to ease the financial burdens of their students. Increasing the use of open educational resources benefits students by reducing course costs. Adopting OER in the classroom allows faculty more freedom in choosing instructional tools. Faculty also benefit from open access publishing by increasing their exposure. However, on the campus of a small, private institution, attendance at workshops to spread awareness and increase the use of these materials was minimal. Faculty had the perception that free resources could not be the same quality as traditional resources. In order to dispel this myth, the Electronic Resources Librarian and Educational Technology Manager collaborated to create custom one hour sessions for individual departments, leveraging library/faculty liaison relationships and the expertise of the office of educational technology. In the session, faculty learn more about open access publishing options, the value of open educational resources, the quality of many open educational resources, and where to find these resources. The session uses the course management system to both disseminate the information shared in the session and create a forum for departments to share resources with each other. Through the CMS, faculty gain access to vetted resources. All attendants have editing privileges within the site after the workshop, allowing them to curate course-specific lists for sharing and future reference. Pilot sessions have been well received and wider implementation is planned for the next academic year.

The presentation discusses a faculty fellows project designed to team up a faculty member and a librarian charged with the redesign of a course to include key information literacy assignments that go beyond the traditional research paper.

Presented at the Franklin University Innovations in Teaching & Learning Conference 2016. With the click of a button, educators have access to repositories filled with hundreds of open educational resources, often tied directly to educational standards. Many of these instructional materials are interactive, shifting the paradigm from passive text-based instructional materials to interactive and engaging content.
Attendees will have the opportunity to actively explore and discuss repositories filled with hundreds of free, pre-designed interactive learning objects.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
