Campos et al studied E-cadherin (cell adhesion molecules involved in
the metastatic process), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)–2, and
MMP-9 (part of a group of enzymes that degrade collagen type IV in
the basement membrane). In the 125 available tumor specimens
and clinical records, they found that low levels of E-cadherin and
high expression of MMP-9 represented independent risk factors for
nodal disease
