Pele, also known as the King of Football, was named the Athlete of the Century in 1989 and 1999. He won numerous titles including Best Player of South America in 1973 and led Brazil to three World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970. Pele played in over 1,300 matches during his career and scored over 1,200 goals, both records at the time. Born in 1940 in Brazil, Pele began playing professionally for Santos at age 15 and went on to play for the Brazilian national team and New York Cosmos before retiring in 1977.
