SLIDES - Presentation by Lucie Dhorne
The past few years have seen an exponential growth of the number of MOOCs worldwide. However, it is proven by the avaivalable completion rate data that motivation can quickly fade even for students who are highly motivated at the beginning of the courses. Faced with this realty, it seems crucial for the future of MOOCs to adress this motivational issue and to find ways to improve the completion rates.
IFP School launched two MOOCs – “Sustainable Mobility” and “Oil&Gas” – which saw unusally high completion rates.
In this paper we analyze the results obtained within these two MOOCs. Our goal is to identify the factors that made such completion rates possible and to understand how these key issues help to produce a succesful MOOC. By this analysis, we are able to give some tips in terms of video recording, interactive assignment design such as Serious Game or Mini-games and participant mentoring to promote motivation. Applying these tips when designing a MOOC will minimize the chance of participant withdrawal and thus lead to high completion rates.
(1) The document analyzes student usage of video resources in three engineering courses with around 250-320 students each. Short videos on key concepts averaged 5.5 minutes with 1.4 views per student, while lecture videos averaged 47 minutes with 1 view per student.
(2) Usage data showed students accessed videos at key times like before coursework deadlines, exams, and laboratory sessions. Retention was higher for shorter videos. More views of videos correlated with better exam performance.
(3) Making some videos publicly available on YouTube resulted in over 50,000 total views from around the world, demonstrating their broader educational value. Guidelines are provided for creating effective pre-laboratory videos based on student and

REAP Assessment/Feedback Principles and ExamplesMartin Hawksey
The document discusses technology supported assessment and feedback. It outlines the REAP project which took a principled approach to redesigning courses using technology. The project involved 6000 students across 19 pilots at 3 universities. The pilots showed benefits like reduced workload and improved learning outcomes. Formative assessment and feedback are important for student learning but current practices are unsatisfactory. The REAP project aimed to address this by embedding seven principles of good feedback practice into technology-supported assessment activities.

GUVI conducted a Python workshop at Anna University to teach the programming language using a new visual and native language-based approach. Assessments found that the workshop significantly improved participants' basic understanding of Python and confidence in coding. It also increased average test scores from 50% pre-workshop to 80% post-workshop. While advanced skills and speed did not increase as much, participants were satisfied overall with the learning experience and GUVI's teaching methodology of combining classroom and online content in the native language. The workshop showed promise for making programming education more accessible.
This document summarizes a presentation about using YouTube to extend microteaching sessions for pre-service teachers in an online teacher education course. Students created YouTube videos of their microteachings to practice teaching and receive feedback. Key findings included that students got to know each other by discussing their videos, learned the technology quickly with peer support, and their videos provided a valuable performance-based assessment of their teaching skills. However, some videos focused too much on content and not enough on engaging students. Overall, the YouTube project provided valuable practice and assessment, but improvements are still needed to better align the course with a performance-based approach.

This document discusses using video demonstrations to teach engineering surveying. It notes that teaching surveying without demonstrations is challenging, as students cannot visualize instruments. The author created two videos - one demonstrating a leveling instrument and one a total station. These videos were shown during lectures to help students visualize instrument setup and use when real instruments could not be present. Students responded positively to the videos and were more engaged. Their performance improved in a subsequent practical session using the real instruments. The author concludes that video demonstrations enhanced teaching and learning for this challenging topic.
