Peer groups consist of individuals of equal age and social status who share social interests. They begin forming at a young age when children make rules for games without parental involvement, allowing them to develop identities separate from their parents. Peer groups provide socialization opportunities outside the family as children engage in different activities with peers than with family. While peer groups can positively support parental values, they can also negatively influence children by pressuring them to adopt norms and views that differ from their parents.
