The story is about a man named Mr. Mead who takes a nightly walk, which has become an abnormal and regressive act in a future where people spend all of their time indoors and immersed in technology. While walking one night, Mr. Mead is spotted by a police car and questioned for his unusual behavior of walking outside alone. The police car represents the power and control of the authoritarian government over its citizens. Though Mr. Mead has committed no crime, his act of walking sets him apart from society as different and threatening. The story is a commentary on skepticism of unchecked technological progress and loss of individuality.
