The Importance of PDHPE
- 1. Why is PDHPE important? Shanna Foley 17473949

Physical Activity • PDHPE promotes being physically active, and this has many positive effects on our body’s physical and mental health. • The benefits of physical activity are that it: - Reduces your risk of becoming overweight - Strengthens your muscles, bones and heart - Improves your physical fitness and mood; it can make you feel good - Can help to reduce the risk of certain diseases and help to increase the length of your life (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011) • Physical activity can also be a useful way to develop our skills in communicating and interacting with others, decision making, moving and problem solving (Board of Studies, 2007).
- 3. Nutrition • PDHPE helps us to learn about healthy eating and how to balance the right amount of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods in our diet • It teaches children to know what ‘good’ foods and ‘bad’ foods are • Emphasises the importance and health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, and drinking water • It also teaches children how to make informed food choices, and be able to determine healthy food alternatives and options
- 4. Body • Children learn about their growth and development through PDHPE (Board of Studies, 2007). • They learn about the physical changes they can expect to go through during puberty. This means children are made aware of what is happening to their bodies, and the physical and emotional changes that can happen. • Children are also provided with sex education. This informs them about the topic of sex, also in relation to their own bodies. Through this, it can help satisfy the curiosity that children naturally have when it comes to the topic of sex, in the most appropriate way. It also brings awareness of issues that are associated with sex to make children cautious and help them to understand sexual behaviours that are and are not acceptable.

Safety & Respect • Safe living and interpersonal relationships are promoted through the PDHPE syllabus (Board of Studies, 2007). • Children learn how to make safe decisions and informed health choices, which helps to prevent them from being in risk situations. • They also learn how to interact positively with others, treat others fairly and respect the differences that exist within society • PDHPE teaches students about the issues around bullying and how to deal with them

Physical & Mental health • Through PDHPE children learn to make informed personal health choices that effect their wellbeing (Board of Studies, 2007). • This can be to do with drug use, as children are also made aware of the negative effects of drugs • PDHPE serves to teach children about mental and emotional issues, strategies for how to deal with them, and who to go to for help with such issues • The physical activity incorporated in the subject can help to improve children’s moods and reduce stress
