Individuals require different types of personal space - intimate (0-18"), personal (18-48"), social (4-9'), and public (>9') - to perform optimally. However, today's open plan offices provide minimal separation, invading personal space and causing increased stress, distraction, and decreased productivity. While open plans aim for cost savings, they undermine performance by failing to accommodate individuals' intrinsic spatial needs as established by proxemics research.
