Family feuds known as "rido" have plagued Muslim communities in the Philippines for decades, resulting in cycles of violence that claim many lives and undermine development. Traditional mediation approaches have had limited success in resolving rido disputes. The document discusses the causes and consequences of rido, and examines traditional and Islamic law-based approaches to mediation. It recommends institutionalizing the roles of traditional and religious leaders in mediation, and replicating successful community-led strategies like those used in ARMM to strengthen local conflict resolution mechanisms and build peace in affected areas. Left unresolved, rido disputes can contribute to conditions conducive to violent extremism, threatening national security.
