2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Fertilizer Effect
Michael Warnert and David Broyles
Minarets High School
Part I: Introduction
A. Background:
The field of study that has been chosen to dive into is Botany. By definition, Botany
is the scientific study of plants, including their physiology, structure, genetics, ecology,
distribution, classification, and economic importance. The main focus of study is how
fertilizer affects plant growth and how it affects the agricultural industry. Since about 870
million people worldwide don’t get enough food, the object is to learn how to create more
resilient and healthier plants. Fertilizer is either a chemical or natural substance that is
added to the soil to help give the soil nutrients which in turn help out the plant(s) that are
using this soil. The fertilizer that will be used is Scott’s Miracle-Gro.
In this project there will be four pots that have a Tuscan Blue Rosemary plant inside
of them. Every store-bought fertilizer has a prescribed ratio of fertilizer to dirt on the back of
the bag, so the idea is to see if using this prescription will work or not. In one pot no
fertilizer is used, just dirt. In the second, pot there will be less fertilizer than described. In the
third, it is going to have the prescribed amount of fertilizer in with the plant. In the fourth and
final pot, there is going to be more fertilizer than prescribed. Through this project Michael
Warnert and David Broyles hope to gain a better understanding of how fertilizer not only
affects plant, but how it influences the agricultural industry.
B. Need For Study:
A big reason why this project is important is because anyone can see how much
fertilizer actually affects the plants themselves, whether it’s important or not, an accurate
solution will be found. Having the correct amount of plant fertilizer will “preserve the health of
your local environments” (Walls-Thumma, D. How Do Different Amounts of Fertilizer Affect
Plant Growth?. GardenGuides. Retrieved December 1, 2013, from
http://www.gardenguides.com/130926-different-amounts-fertilizer-affect-plant-growth.html)
which is why it important to test whether the written amount of fertilizer is the correct amount
for your plants. Testing this idea can help the agricultural industry by giving your average
person that wants to get something to grow the proper knowledge about fertilizer. The
question is how much fertilizer will a person need to help their plants grow. The results of
this experiment can be shared easily through social media, and on a very basic scale,
effect the world depending on our thoroughness of our experiment. Depending on the result
of this experiment it could bring products of the Agricultural Industry to a same or higher
quality with a cheaper, more expensive, or same cost effect. “Rosemary is perfect for any
herb garden” (17, J. Herbs : How to Grow Rosemary. jetta17.hubpages.com. Retrieved
December 1, 2013, from http://jetta17.hubpages.com/hub/Herbs-How-to-Grow-Rosemary)
posts “jetta17” from hubpages.com, so this experiment should bring an accurate record of
the effects of different amounts fertilizer on plants in general.
C. Experimental Design:
● Independent Variable - Amount of Fertilizer
● Dependent Variable - Plant Growth and overall health
● Control Group - Plant that has no fertilizer added
● Constants - At the Minarets High School Greenhouse.
● Variables - Wind, possibly rain, possibly frost, and shade from trees and fences on
different plants.
● Sample Size - 4 rosemary plants.
● Number of Repetitions - Twice
D. Hypothesis:
If different amounts of fertilizer are used to grow Tuscan Blue Rosemary, then the
plant with the extra amount of fertilizer will grow the most.
Part II: Methodology
1. Purchase four Tuscan Blue Rosemary plants at about 6 inches in height
2. Purchase 4 planting pots (that have holes on the bottom for drainage)
3. Label the first pot, “Pot A”.
a. Fill in “Pot A” with no Miracle Grow potting mix.
4. Label the second pot, “Pot B”.
a. Fill in “Pot B” with 50% less of the prescribed amount of Miracle Grow potting
mix.
5. Label the third pot, “Pot C”.
a. Fill in “Pot C” with the prescribed amount to Miracle Grow potting mix.
6. Label the fourth pot, “Pot D”.
a. Fill in “Pot D” with 50% more Miracle Grow potting mix than prescribed.
7. Take the 4 planting pots starting with A and transplant a Tuscan Blue Rosemary plant
into the center of the pot 2 inches deep;; repeat this step for each of the four pots.
9. Move the plants to a well, sunlit area.
10. Insure that water is available for watering the Rosemary.
11. Give each Rosemary plant 2 cups of water at the same time every morning for five
days, and then don’t water the plants for 2 days.
12. Using a ruler, measure the tallest point of each of the rosemary plants, starting from the
base of the plant and ending with the top. Repeat this step every seven days.
13. Record your measurements on a standard notepad. Repeat this step every seven
days.
14. Using the ruler measure the width of the plant from the two farthest points. Repeat this
step every seven days.
15. Record your measurements on a standard notepad. Repeat this step every seven
days.
16. Using the ruler measure the diameter of the stem. Repeat this step every seven days.
17. Record your measurements on a standard notepad. Repeat this step every seven
days.
18. Take the recorded data after 2 months and chart out the data for each plant on the
notepad.
19. Using the charted data to look at which plant grew the most and determine which
amount of potting is most successful.
Part III: Results
A. Data Collected
I. Appendix A
II. Appendix B
B. Summary of Data
Appendix A shows the growth from when the project was started with all of the plants
starting at 4 inches in length. Plant C showed the most amount of growth from its start, but
plant B is almost as tall and looks much healthier. With Plant C being 5.625 inches tall and
Plant B being 5.5 inches tall determining how which plant is better comes down to
comparing the health appearance between Plant C and Plant B. Also, Plant B had the best
growth rate at 37% while Plant C showed a growth rate of 27%.
Appendix B is in accordance with Appendix A. It demonstrates the growth pattern
shown from the four rosemary plants. The average height of Plant A was 4.305 inches tall,
the average height of Plant B was 4.75 inches tall, the average height of Plant C was 4.605
inches tall, and the average height of Plant D was 4.0875 inches tall. The overall average
height of the plants combined is 4.437 inches tall.
Part IV: Discussion
A. Conclusion:
The results of this experiment, based on the hypothesis given to us from David
Broyles and Michael Warnert, have shown that Pot D would grow the best in terms of height
and overall health appearance. The results proved that 50% less than the prescribed
amount of Miracle-Gro potting mix will result in the growth of the healthiest plant. The
hypothesis supporting plant D did not hold true due to the fact that the ingredients in the
Miracle-Gro potting mix can be harmful to plants that are exposed to too much of these
ingredients. Miracle-Gro potting mix contains ammonium phosphate which, in large
quantities, can result in unhealthy plant growth. The hypothesis is false because there is too
much ammonium phosphate present in order for the plant to grow in a healthy environment.
Pot A had no Miracle-Gro fertilizer in its pot, and it grew to be a somewhat healthy
plant. The plant showed a decent amount of growth, but could have used some help. Pot B
had 50% less fertilizer than the prescribed amount of fertilizer according to Miracle-Gro.
This resulted in the healthiest plant, and almost the tallest plant. Pot B goes to show how a
delicate balance can be useful when using Miracle-Gro potting mix. Also, Pot B showed the
greatest growth rate at 37%. Pot C contained the prescribed amount of fertilizer, and
ended up providing a plant that grew successfully. However, it was not the healthiest plant.
Pot C was watered the same as every other plant shown in this experiment, and still turned
out to be a somewhat unhealthy plant. Pot D received 50% more Miracle-Gro potting mix
than prescribed, and that resulted in a barbaric plant. Pot D was thought to grow the best
because it would receive the most ammonium phosphate which is used to supplement
