Women and Buddhism began in India in the 5th-6th century BCE. There are three main forms of Buddhism - Theravada denies the possibility of female Buddhas and nuns; Mahayana views Buddhism as beyond gender; and Tantric Buddhism is female-centered. While Buddhist language avoids gendered God terms, some scriptures describe women negatively. These views likely reflect society, not Buddha. Countries practicing conservative Theravada Buddhism often limit women's roles, while Mahayana countries like Taiwan and Japan ordain women and support women's monasteries. The Sakyadhita association and feminist Buddhists work to promote women's enlightenment by recovering scriptures like the Therigatha.

Maharshi Dayananda Saraswati was a Hindu reformer who founded the Arya Samaj movement in India in 1875. He believed in restoring Hinduism to its original Vedic principles by removing corruptions and superstitions that had been introduced over time. Some of his key teachings included rejecting idol worship, caste discrimination, and promoting education based on the Vedas. Despite facing opposition and even an assassination attempt, Dayananda traveled widely advocating for his reforms. He established the Arya Samaj organization and its 10 principles to guide followers in leading a righteous life according to the teachings of the Vedas.
