Cutting 500 to 700 jobs could be next at troubled
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, which the
incoming chief executive said yesterday might be
sold to a for-profit company if a turn-around fails
to take hold soon.
The 526-bed hospital lost $52 million in the most
recently reported fiscal year, capping a string of
losses and leading the hospital's parent CareGroup
Inc. quietly to consider selling the 4,800-employee
institution to a for-profit company, Paul Levy, the
new chief executive, revealed yesterday. He said
the plan has been set aside, for now. 18

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center lost an
estimated $67 million on operations in the fiscal
year that ended Sept. 30 - a loss that will grow
to $102 million this year without rapid and
drastic changes, according to a management
consulting firm's report released yesterday.
