PATNA DOMESTIC TOURISTS Tourist arrival data for 2001 to 2012 was extrapolated
to project tourist footfall in Patna up to 2023.
Two scenarios are expected:
1. Exponential rate of growth of tourists
2. Linear rate of growth of tourists
Unless some major boost is given to the
Tourism sector by public and private
Agencies, the likelihood of exponential
Growth is negligible. Hence it would be safe to
assume a linear growth trend for tourists
To Patna.

DATA ON TRAVEL/ STAY BEHAVIOR OF TOURISTS
4
OBSERVATIONS:
•April month recorded the highest number of tourists staying overnight in the Patna
region.
•While day tourists comprise of around 38% of total tourists, a large chunk( around 46 %)
prefer to stay with their friends and relatives, rather than use the available accommodation
units. The reasons for this can be diverse, such as:
1. Personal preference
2. Dissatisfaction with available accommodation unit in terms of quality, service and
hygiene
3. Lack of affordability
4. Poor accessibility from accommodation units to places of interest
5. Safety and security concerns, specially for women and children
6. Lack of awareness about available options
7. Lack of packaged options which offer accommodation + meals + sight seeing/ transfers
to and from railway station/ airport.
•Patna region witnesses the highest day tourist footfall in the months of April, September
and December.
•December and January months witness the highest number of visits by foreign tourists.
This coincides with the holiday season throughout the world . Also the climate during these
months is more conducive for tourism as compared to the summer months.
5
AVERAGE BED OCCUPANCY IN VARIOUS
ACCOMODATION CATEGORIES IN
DIFFERENT QUARTERS OF THE YEAR
AVAILABILITY OF RESTAURANTS AND ACCOMODATION
UNITS IN PATNA
OBSERVATIONS:
•The highest occupancy rates are seen in
the fourth quarter of the year coinciding
with the festival season, winter
vacations as well as local events such as
the Sonepur mela.
•Poor occupancy is recorded in the first
and second quarter of the year
•Overall occupancy ranges fro 52% to
59%.
6
TOURIST PROFILE FOR BIHAR
OBSERVATIONS:
•A majority of the
visitors are in the
younger age group
15-34 years.
•Senior citizens and
children comprise a
very small
percentage of the
total visitors (0.4 %
and 0.9%
respectively).
•The facilities and
services offered at
tourist destinations
should be focused
towards catering to
the needs and
choices of the focus
group (15-34 yrs).
•Enhancement in
facilities required to
instill confidence in
senior citizens.
7
AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF TOURISTS(%)
OBSERVATIONS:
The data shown here was recorded in 2005 and according to this data, most of the tourists lie in the low or
lower middle income group. This may account for the low occupancy rates for accommodation units, as
most of the people would find any kind of paid service unaffordable. They would prefer staying with friends
and relatives. Further, tourism being a non obligatory or vital activity, people in the lower income groups
will tend to spend lesser on this .
It may be noted that the state of Bihar has seen rapid economic progress in the past decade. Hence income
levels as well as purchasing power of people have also risen. The data above hence may not be a true
representation of the current trends. A fresh survey is required to furnish this data and get a true picture of
the current tourist profile.
8
COUNTRY/ STATE OF ORIGIN OF TOURISTS TO BIHAR
9
OBSERVATIONS:
•An overwhelming majority of the domestic tourists are from Bihar itself. This indicates:
1. Lack of awareness amongst tourists in the rest of the country about the tourism potential
of Bihar and Patna
2. Lack of confidence/ safety & security concerns amongst the non Bihar origin domestic
tourists.
3. Need to hard sell Bihar and Patna as a attractive tourism destination. Examples set by
states such as Kerala, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh can be followed.
4. Need for package options which combine sightseeing, religious tourism, recreation with
convenient and affordable options.
5. The luxury tourism sector remains a completely untapped potential in the state. Low
occupancy rates in star hotels, absence of luxury facilities and complete absence of resorts
/ spa destinations are a clear indicator of this lacuna.
• Most foreign tourists visit Bihar and Patna for religious tourism. The reasons for low
footfall from diverse nationalities for recreation/ luxury/ heritage tourism remains the
same as that for domestic tourists.
• Need to mark Bihar as a tourism destination on the world tourism map.
10
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND OCCUPATION OF TOURISTS
(HEAD OF THE GROUP)
11
TRAVEL FREQUENCY OF TOURISTS TO BIHAR
OBSERVATIONS:
•Bihar remains a destination
which does not attracts repeat
visits from tourists.
•Most of the repeat tourists
come here for religious
purpose.
•Need to carve out thematic
tourism routes and trails
which can widen the tourism
offerings of the state.
•The facilities and
infrastructure offered will
play a big role in ensuring
consistent patronage from
tourists.

Exponential rate of growth of tourists 2. Linear rate of growth of tourists Unless some major boost is given to the Tourism sector by public and private Agencies, the likelihood of exponential Growth is negligible. Hence it would be safe to assume a linear growth trend for tourists To Patna. 2002 2012 2023 DOMESTIC 592274 5090876 10000000 FOREIGN 2109 15783 50000 TOTAL 594383 5106659 10050000 PROJECTIONS FOR TOURIST ARRIVAL 3
  • 4. DATA ON TRAVEL/ STAY BEHAVIOR OF TOURISTS 4
  • 5. OBSERVATIONS: •April month recorded the highest number of tourists staying overnight in the Patna region. •While day tourists comprise of around 38% of total tourists, a large chunk( around 46 %) prefer to stay with their friends and relatives, rather than use the available accommodation units. The reasons for this can be diverse, such as: 1. Personal preference 2. Dissatisfaction with available accommodation unit in terms of quality, service and hygiene 3. Lack of affordability 4. Poor accessibility from accommodation units to places of interest 5. Safety and security concerns, specially for women and children 6. Lack of awareness about available options 7. Lack of packaged options which offer accommodation + meals + sight seeing/ transfers to and from railway station/ airport. •Patna region witnesses the highest day tourist footfall in the months of April, September and December. •December and January months witness the highest number of visits by foreign tourists. This coincides with the holiday season throughout the world . Also the climate during these months is more conducive for tourism as compared to the summer months. 5

  • 7. TOURIST PROFILE FOR BIHAR OBSERVATIONS: •A majority of the visitors are in the younger age group 15-34 years. •Senior citizens and children comprise a very small percentage of the total visitors (0.4 % and 0.9% respectively). •The facilities and services offered at tourist destinations should be focused towards catering to the needs and choices of the focus group (15-34 yrs). •Enhancement in facilities required to instill confidence in senior citizens. 7
  • 8. AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF TOURISTS(%) OBSERVATIONS: The data shown here was recorded in 2005 and according to this data, most of the tourists lie in the low or lower middle income group. This may account for the low occupancy rates for accommodation units, as most of the people would find any kind of paid service unaffordable. They would prefer staying with friends and relatives. Further, tourism being a non obligatory or vital activity, people in the lower income groups will tend to spend lesser on this . It may be noted that the state of Bihar has seen rapid economic progress in the past decade. Hence income levels as well as purchasing power of people have also risen. The data above hence may not be a true representation of the current trends. A fresh survey is required to furnish this data and get a true picture of the current tourist profile. 8
  • 9. COUNTRY/ STATE OF ORIGIN OF TOURISTS TO BIHAR 9
  • 10. OBSERVATIONS: •An overwhelming majority of the domestic tourists are from Bihar itself. This indicates: 1. Lack of awareness amongst tourists in the rest of the country about the tourism potential of Bihar and Patna 2. Lack of confidence/ safety & security concerns amongst the non Bihar origin domestic tourists. 3. Need to hard sell Bihar and Patna as a attractive tourism destination. Examples set by states such as Kerala, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh can be followed. 4. Need for package options which combine sightseeing, religious tourism, recreation with convenient and affordable options. 5. The luxury tourism sector remains a completely untapped potential in the state. Low occupancy rates in star hotels, absence of luxury facilities and complete absence of resorts / spa destinations are a clear indicator of this lacuna. • Most foreign tourists visit Bihar and Patna for religious tourism. The reasons for low footfall from diverse nationalities for recreation/ luxury/ heritage tourism remains the same as that for domestic tourists. • Need to mark Bihar as a tourism destination on the world tourism map. 10
  • 11. EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND OCCUPATION OF TOURISTS (HEAD OF THE GROUP) 11
  • 12.
