The Scientific Conquest of Death
One line of escape from the maze of blind alleys is of particular relevance to our theme: a phenomenon which goes under the name of 'paedomorphosis'. It was described by Garstang in the 1920s, and taken up by several biologists; but although the existence of the phenomenon is generally accepted, it made little impact on the orthodox theory and is rarely mentioned in the textbooks. It indicates that at certain critical stages evolution can retrace its steps, as it were, along the path which led to the dead end and make a fresh start in a new, more promising direction. The crucial event in this process is the appearance at the foetal, larval or juvenile stage of some useful evolutionary novelty which is carried over into the adult stage of the organism's progeny.
Now this lowering of the age of sexual maturity is a well-known evolutionary phenomenon called neoteny. It has two aspects: the animal starts to breed while still in a larval or juvenile stage; and it never reaches the fully adult stage, which is dropped off - eliminated from its life cycle ('terminal abbreviation').
Sir Gavin de Beer compared the process to the re-winding of a biological clock when evolution is in danger of running down and coming to a standstill: 'A race may become rejuvenated by pushing the adult stage of its individuals off from the end of their ontogenies, and such a race may then radiate out in all directions.'
Paedomorphosis - or juvenilization - thus appears to play an important part in the grand strategy of evolution. It involves a retreat from specialized adult forms to earlier, less committed and more plastic stages in the development of organisms - followed by a sudden advance in a new direction. It is as if the stream of life had momentarily reversed its course, flowing uphill for a while towards its original source; then opened up a new stream-bed - leaving the koala bear stranded on his tree like a discarded hypothesis. In other words, we are faced here with the same pattern of reculer pour mieux sauter, 'step back to leap', which we have encountered at the critical turning points in the evolution of science and art. Biological evolution is to a large extent a history of escapes from the blind alleys of over-specialization, the evolution of ideas a series of escapes from the tyranny of mental habits and stagnant routines. In biological evolution the escape is brought about by a retreat from the adult to a juvenile stage as the starting-point for the new line; in mental evolution by a temporary regression to more primitive and uninhibited modes of ideation, followed by the creative forward leap (the equivalent of a sudden burst of 'adaptive radiation'). Thus these two types of progress - the emergence of evolutionary novelties and the creation of cultural novelties reflect the same undoing-redoing pattern and appear as analogous processes on different levels.

Love It or Lose It: The Coming
Biophilia Revolution

I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing:

“Nature and I are two,” filmmaker Woody Allen once said, and
apparently the two have not gotten together yet (Lax, 1992, pp.
39 –40). Allen is known to take extraordinary precautions to limit
bodily and mental contact with rural flora and fauna. He does not go
in natural lakes, for example, because “there are live things in there.”
The nature Allen does find comfortable is that of New York City, a
modest enough standard for wildness.
Allen’s aversion to nature, what can be called biophobia, is
increasingly common among people raised with television, Walkman
radios attached to their heads, and video games and living amidst
shopping malls, freeways, and dense urban or suburban settings where
nature is permitted tastefully, as decoration. More than ever we dwell
in and among our own creations and are increasingly uncomfortable
with nature lying beyond our direct control. Biophobia ranges from

discomfort in “natural” places to active scorn for whatever is not
manmade, managed, or air-conditioned. Biophobia, in short, is the
culturally acquired urge to affiliate with technology, human artifacts,
and solely with human interests regarding the natural world. I
intend the word broadly to include as well those who regard nature
“objectively” as nothing more than “resources” to be used any way the
favored among the present generation see fit.
Is biophobia a problem as, say, misanthropy or sociopathy, or is
it merely a personal preference; one plausible view of nature among
many? Is it OK that Woody Allen feels little or no sympathy or kinship
with nature? Does it matter that a growing number of other people do
not like it or like it only in the abstract as nothing more than resources
to be managed or as television nature specials? Does it matter that
we are increasingly separated from the conditions of nature? If these
things do matter, how do they matter and why? And why have so many
come to think that the created world is inadequate? Inadequate to
what and for what?
At the other end of the continuum of possible orientation toward
nature is “biophilia,” which E. O. Wilson (1984) has defined as “the
urge to affiliate with other forms of life” (p. 85). Erich Fromm
(1973) once defined it more broadly as “the passionate love of life
and of all that is alive” (pp. 365–366). Both agree, however, that
biophilia is innate and a sign of mental and physical health. To what
extent are our biological prospects and our sanity now dependent
on our capacity for biophilia? To that degree it is important that
we understand how biophilia comes to be, how it prospers, what
competencies and abilities it requires of us, and ho.

How can societies encourage innovation in the life sciences, and still protect the public from unreasonable risks? Those who design or modify living organisms have long claimed there is little or no risk to what they do. As a result, billions (at least) of genetically engineered plants, animals and bacteria have been released into the wild.
But terms like “bioengineering” and “biotechnology” imply a knowledge of the mechanics of living things that is simply untrue by any reasonable standard.
Scientific discoveries are constantly changing our fundamental understanding of biology. Whatever declarations of safety were made based in the past, no one actually knows what the wild and the engineered are eventually going to make of each other – or maybe, eventually, of us.

In this webinar we give an overview of advanced applications of the IVM system in preclinical research. IVIM technology is a provider of all-in-one intravital microscopy systems and solutions optimized for in vivo imaging of live animal models at sub-micron resolution. The system’s unique features and user-friendly software enables researchers to probe fast dynamic biological processes such as immune cell tracking, cell-cell interaction as well as vascularization and tumor metastasis with exceptional detail. This webinar will also give an overview of IVM being utilized in drug development, offering a view into the intricate interaction between drugs/nanoparticles and tissues in vivo and allows for the evaluation of therapeutic intervention in a variety of tissues and organs. Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes
on Io’s surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes.
Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a groundbased telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large
Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io’s trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images
show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part
of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. The ambient solar wind that flls the heliosphere originates from multiple
sources in the solar corona and is highly structured. It is often described
as high-speed, relatively homogeneous, plasma streams from coronal
holes and slow-speed, highly variable, streams whose source regions are
under debate. A key goal of ESA/NASA’s Solar Orbiter mission is to identify
solar wind sources and understand what drives the complexity seen in the
heliosphere. By combining magnetic feld modelling and spectroscopic
techniques with high-resolution observations and measurements, we show
that the solar wind variability detected in situ by Solar Orbiter in March
2022 is driven by spatio-temporal changes in the magnetic connectivity to
multiple sources in the solar atmosphere. The magnetic feld footpoints
connected to the spacecraft moved from the boundaries of a coronal hole
to one active region (12961) and then across to another region (12957). This
is refected in the in situ measurements, which show the transition from fast
to highly Alfvénic then to slow solar wind that is disrupted by the arrival of
a coronal mass ejection. Our results describe solar wind variability at 0.5 au
but are applicable to near-Earth observatories.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) provides means to characterize brain activations in response to behavior. However, cognitive neuroscience has been limited to group-level effects referring to the performance of specific tasks. To obtain the functional profile of elementary cognitive mechanisms, the combination of brain responses to many tasks is required. Yet, to date, both structural atlases and parcellation-based activations do not fully account for cognitive function and still present several limitations. Further, they do not adapt overall to individual characteristics. In this talk, I will give an account of deep-behavioral phenotyping strategies, namely data-driven methods in large task-fMRI datasets, to optimize functional brain-data collection and improve inference of effects-of-interest related to mental processes. Key to this approach is the employment of fast multi-functional paradigms rich on features that can be well parametrized and, consequently, facilitate the creation of psycho-physiological constructs to be modelled with imaging data. Particular emphasis will be given to music stimuli when studying high-order cognitive mechanisms, due to their ecological nature and quality to enable complex behavior compounded by discrete entities. I will also discuss how deep-behavioral phenotyping and individualized models applied to neuroimaging data can better account for the subject-specific organization of domain-general cognitive systems in the human brain. Finally, the accumulation of functional brain signatures brings the possibility to clarify relationships among tasks and create a univocal link between brain systems and mental functions through: (1) the development of ontologies proposing an organization of cognitive processes; and (2) brain-network taxonomies describing functional specialization. To this end, tools to improve commensurability in cognitive science are necessary, such as public repositories, ontology-based platforms and automated meta-analysis tools. I will thus discuss some brain-atlasing resources currently under development, and their applicability in cognitive as well as clinical neuroscience.
