Library Involvement
OER Policy:
4.4. OER Support
Librarians will serve a central support role for all faculty wishing to
incorporate OER into a course. Among the support provided by designated
Librarians are facilitating Pathways, preparing OER LibGuides, and assisting
faculty in the location and curation of OER content. Additional support will be
provided by faculty leaders, and an OER advisory group representing a
cross-section of stakeholders.
Library Involvement
Librarian Position Description includes:
Collaborates with faculty and librarians to develop and provide services that
promote the effective use of open educational resources and open content
within the College’s curriculum. Maintains current knowledge of issues in
open education, open textbooks, open access, copyright, licensing and
intellectual property by reviewing professional literature and participating in
professional meetings.

Pathways: Facilitating an Online OER Training Course for Faculty

  • 5. Library Involvement OER Policy: 4.4. OER Support Librarians will serve a central support role for all faculty wishing to incorporate OER into a course. Among the support provided by designated Librarians are facilitating Pathways, preparing OER LibGuides, and assisting faculty in the location and curation of OER content. Additional support will be provided by faculty leaders, and an OER advisory group representing a cross-section of stakeholders.
  • 6. Library Involvement Librarian Position Description includes: Collaborates with faculty and librarians to develop and provide services that promote the effective use of open educational resources and open content within the College’s curriculum. Maintains current knowledge of issues in open education, open textbooks, open access, copyright, licensing and intellectual property by reviewing professional literature and participating in professional meetings. Editor's Notes

  1. Developed by faculty champion Linda Williams, VCCS Chancellor’s innovation grant 6-week online asynchronous course; faculty must complete it in order to teach a Z-course Librarian facilitators offer a way to make it scalable; 96 faculty have now completed it
  2. Includes readings, videos, discussions, and activities It is self-paced, but encouraged to complete one module per week & faculty must complete by end of 6 weeks Anyone can look at it on the Lumen open courses website Some people fly through; others are challenged and overwhelmed
  3. Master course built with help from Lumen in Canvas
  4. Our instance uses an LTI to link to content from Blackboard, and we use Blackboard for grading, discussions, comments
  5. We can talk more about content later, or you can view it on Lumen’s website. We would like to talk about what we’ve learned. I have now taught twice; first librarian-facilitated session was ? And we currently have 4 librarians certified to facilitate and two more in the docket. We must successfully complete Pathways and also a custom facilitator training; abbreviated version of TOPS Elite
  6. Time is an issue for both the students and facilitators. Solved problem for librarians with the stipend model. Questions - copyright, use of licenses, policy, procedure Peer to peer teaching – demonstrate respect and maintain support role (guide on the side)
  7. Benefit for everyone = it’s open!
