Bridge The Artist is a collaboration between South African brothers Warren and Christopher Adams, who are internationally acclaimed dancers and choreographers based in New York, and Theo Ndindwa, the founder of iKapa Dance Theatre in Cape Town. The project will see the Adams brothers spend two months in Cape Town creating new work, teaching, and donating their expertise to help further the development of South African dance. Support is requested to fund the costs of bringing the brothers to Cape Town to fulfill Nelson Mandela's vision of training South African artists who then return home to share their skills.
The project is called Coming Home, a collaboration between Adams Works and iKapa Dance Theatre to create new dance works in South Africa. It will feature the donation of a dance work to iKapa, training for their 300 students, and a documentary film about the importance of art in communities. The budget required is R120,000.
Cultural Points of View is a cultural awareness training program. This pilot was designed for delivery to SES volunteers and staff to develop an understanding of their local Aboriginal communities and develop skills to work with their communities.
Funded by the NSW State Emergency Service, the Adult and Community Education Unit and the Australian Flexible Learning Framework.
“Urban Peace Arts” is a youth showcase of local and international talent in sports, street arts and fusions of the two via workshops, competition, cultural exchanges all focus on social action.

Sagiya Foundation partners with government departments, universities, and other organizations to develop and present productions that achieve strategic community development goals. They provide services such as creative writing, theatre direction, and artist management, and have received endorsements and funding from partners like Ethekwini Municipality and the Department of Arts and Culture.

Members from the Young Arts Entrepreneurs provided a taster from their current projects and were on hand to share their experiences and answer questions.

The !Kauru African Contemporary Art Project is a platform that showcases contemporary African art and promotes cultural exchange. It is supported by the South African Department of Arts and Culture. The project exhibits over 100 artists from 20+ countries annually to educate audiences and promote intra-African trade. It also organizes the Black Collectors Forum to engage collectors and develop art markets. Over the past 5 years, !Kauru has successfully organized exhibitions and partnerships to share expertise between African artists, curators, and audiences.
Sistra aims to provide social services through arts programming for families and youth in Brooklyn communities undergoing development, starting in Red Hook. Its mission is to build self-esteem, increase academic achievement, and encourage civic behavior through arts education. The founders, Carmel Bernardo and Abena Floyd, both have experience in arts administration and community programming. Sistra plans to implement various arts programs, such as theater, dance, and visual arts, to foster leadership, learning, and community engagement among residents, especially minority youth.
Theatre in Education (TIE) uses drama to educate audiences on important topics in an interactive and entertaining way, with popular subjects including anti-bullying, sex education, and health issues. TIE companies adapt their productions to different locations and audiences, and there are many established TIE companies throughout the UK that provide educational drama productions and workshops in schools. Outreach drama also uses performance to engage communities on social issues but works more closely with specific community groups to involve them in the creative process.

This curriculum vitae summarizes the educational and professional experience of Bangala Vuyisile Ishmael Boy. He has a certificate in arts and culture management from Wits University and attended summer programs in arts management and small artistic group management. Professionally, he has over 7 years of experience as an Outreach Development Manager at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, where he organized community arts programs and festivals. He later worked as a Marketing Manager.
Music Basti' was started in 2008 to work with and empower street children through music. The project is currently working to develop a music program that teaches the children about music as well integrates messages about human rights education and life skills. It focuses on helping the children to develop self- identity, value orientation and attitudes. Alongside this, it endeavors to join together community needs of children at risk, particularly street children and urban slum children, with the efforts of the music community.
Music Basti is run by IDEA (Integrated Development Education Association), and supported by The YP Foundation. It works with Aman Biradari, and Bridge Music Academy. Music Basti was selected for the Change Looms development and assessment program in July 2009, the program supports the work of young people working for social change (Pravah and Ashoka).
The project has worked with various musicians and volunteers in Delhi, combining professionals with student volunteers and musicians. It aims to develop a collaborative and positive relationship between the music community, individuals and institutions, and through them raise awareness about the issue of child rights, and the use of the arts, particularly music to create this awareness.

We are writing to entreat you for your partnership and/or sponsorship of our current multi-
media dance and film project called “PATHS”.
“PATHS” is a creative and collaborative contemporary dance exchange program involving
Kenyan and Danish artists in the area of modern dance choreography, film and live music. It is
an artistic collaboration between Dance Into Space Foundation (DISF,Kenya) and Little
Womachine, a Danish film and dance company. The project involves Kenyan dancers with and
without disabilities, and the Danish film crew. The preparatory phase of project is sponsored in
part by Danish Culture Fund through the Sarakasi Arts Trust.
Part of the proceeds from the gala night will be in aid of Imani Disbled Group, Shauri Moyo in
aid of construction of a workshop.

4. Project Brief
“PATHS” is a multi-media and mix-ability contemporary dance project. It is a talent exchange,
and partnership of Kenyan and Danish artists in the area of modern dance choreography, film
and live music. The project is collaboration between Dance Into Space (DIS), a Kenyan
contemporary dance company and LittleWomachine, a Danish film and dance company.
The project entails the devising, creating and presenting choreographic and cinematographic
images and pieces of the Nordic and Kenyan landscapes. It explores the connections and
disconnections of footprints of animate and inanimate objects…
In a sense, “PATHS” is a celebration as well as a connection. It is a meeting between two
cultures and two countries through two performance genres, dance and film. It involves
dancers with and without physical and visual disabilities.
“PATHS” is directed by reknowned choreographer and dancer Mr. Ondiege Matthew (KEN) and
co-directed by award winning film director and dancer Ms. Vibeke Muasya (DEN).
The world premiere and gala of “PATHS” will be held in Nairobi on September 7th, 2012 at the
GoDown Art Centre. Subsequently, it will show for the public on Saturday 8 th, September 2012
at the GoDown Arts Centre before touring Denmark and Europe between September and
October.
The Synopsis
The story of “Paths” is a story of our lives. And it is this; Humans move. Animals move and
electrodes inside a computer move too. We create roads, tracks, highways, superhighways… we
move ahead. We go, we return, we meet, we depart… We remember, we forget. But we always
leave a path…

Team Profiles
Ondiege Matthew-Artistic Director, Dancer & Choreographer
Ondiege Matthew studied drama and theatre in Nairobi before taking professional courses in dance in
Bagamoyo Tanzania, Ecole de Sables Senegal and Tseh Summer School in Russia.
He founded company Dance Into Space in 1997 and has been the artistic director, choreographer,
dancer and trainer. In 2005 he started working with disabled dancers in a mix ability program for the
first time in Kenya where he has trained more than 100 dancers with disabilities since then. Ondiege
also works as a teacher, an actor, a consultant and an expert in dance and theatre for community
development and education.
As an actor, he has appeared in different roles in several movies the most recent being “In a Better
World” Susana Bier and “Lost in Africa” Vibeke Muasya.
He has taught dance in several institutions privately and at the Kenya National Institute of Performing
Arts. He is also the former and founding chairman of Kapu La Sanaa (KALASA), the welfare association of
artists drawn from different genres.
Lawi Nyakeri-Project Coordinator
Lawi Nyakeri is a theatre artist and educator with extensive skills and knowledge in theatre/drama in
community education and empowerment. He has worked in various theatre interventions in diverse
fields including HIV/AIDS prevention, mitigation, care, support and treatment, human rights, governance
and environmental conservation. In addition, he has coordinated three editions of Kenya International
6. Puppetry Festivals (2002, 2004, and 2006) and conducted capacity building trainings in and outside
Kenya. He has authored A Trainer’s to Guide PET-Participatory Education Theatre ,(CGD 2002)
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons) degree from Egerton University, Njoro and is currently pursuing a
graduate course in Theatre Administration.
Alacoque Ntome-Choreographic Assistant, Dancer &Trainer
Alacoque Ntome studied Creative Entrepreneurship at Kenya Polytechnic University College. He joined
Dance Into Space in 2005 and since then has been involved in various dance projects at the company. In
2010, he attended a professional African contemporary dance training program at Ecole des sable,
Senegal. He is also a graduate of intermediate theatre training program organized by The Theatre
Company. He is currently involved in the Theatre and Dance Therapy program at Naro Moru Disabled
Children’s Home.
James Gathitu-Marketing Executive
James Gathitu has worked` in the performance field as an actor for the past twelve years; seven of
those years he has doubled up as a script-writer. He received his performance training from primary
school level. Since then, he has worked with numerous performance groups in Nairobi and Mombasa ,
where he is now based. He is recently performing with The Theatre Company and was part of the
cultural Olympiad in London’s Globe to Globe Festival 2012. His most recent script, Trees, has just done
touring East Africa, as part of a series of five ten minute plays dubbed Fire by Ten.
Alice Kamene-Dancer/Training Assistant
Alice Kamene has worked in traditional and contemporary dance genre for the past three years. She
made her debut in contemporary dance in 2008 in the Dance Forum Nairobi (DFN) where she received
her initial training. Since then she has worked with Compagnie Gaara, Kunja Dance Group and Dance
Into Space. Her passion for dance has enabled to attend various dance workshops in and outside Kenya.
Nicholas Ouma Odhiambo-Dancer/Training Assistant
Nicholas Ouma Odhiambo is a physically handicapped dancer, businessman and community mobilize.
He has been involved in contemporary dance for the last two years. His most recent choreographic
appearances at Dance Into Space have been in The Marathon and Uraibu, both presented at the
Alliance Francais to a deservedly widespread acclaim. Besides dancing, Nicholas is a Community
Mobilizer with the Association of People with Disability in Kenya (APDK) where he has been for the last
four years

DANCE INTO SPACE
Dance Into Space (DIS) is a registered Dance Into Space Foundation (DISF) is a Kenyan
contemporary dance theatre company registered as a not-for-profit making organization and
incorporated under the Companies Act (Cap. 486) of the Laws of Kenya. The company is based
at the GoDown Arts Centre, Nairobi.
It is a dance and theatre company that exists to foster the appreciation, practice and training
of dance and theatre through the sharing of knowledge and experience in entertaining,
educational and outreach development programs with artists with and those without
disability.
Mission: To engage in high quality dance/theatre training and creations at the grassroots, national and
international levels.
Vision: A society where dance is popular and is being utilized by all persons in all spheres of life.
Programs and Projects
The Dance Meets Roots (DMR) Project: Is an intercultural and decentralization contemporary
dance program whose goal is to create new dance groups and spaces across the country in the
provinces. It is a network of 15 rural based contemporary dance groups
The Mix Ability Project (MAP): MAP works with dancers with and those without disabilities in
contemporary dance training, choreographic creations and outreach programs.
Skill Training and Capacity Development Program: This is a cross cutting component in all of
DIS work for new and existing nascent partner groups and for dancers at the company.
Dance Into Space works to create awareness, empower behaviour and attitude change and
promote advocacy in various fields of community development including disability, HIV/Aids,
youth empowerment, gender based violence, human rights, nutrition, security and family
health and planning.
The company works in these areas in collaboration with private organisations, government
agencies and NGO’s.
