Terrence Whitehall Paper art : a pathfinder 2
Introduction
This pathfinder is aimed at students studying the Diploma of Visual Arts (Course
No. 10416) at the St. George campus of the Sydney Institute of TAFE:
http://sydneytafe.edu.au/course-details/fine-arts-and-ceramics/visual-arts-vet-
fee-help-28903#results
These students learn about many forms of art, in different kinds of media,
materials, in different artistic principles, and paper appears in many of these
principles.
Paper is one of the most important inventions in human history. It is used to
keep records, to communicate, for currency, for weaponry, for cleaning, for
packaging, for decorating, and plays an integral part in the creative process.
Because of its extraordinary versatility, paper has always been a staple of artistic
practice, whether as a surface or as a medium. It has had many artistic uses
throughout history, from the origami of Japan to the papercuts of China, and
continues to have a prominent place in contemporary art. Many artists use paper
in sculpture, drawing, painting and printing. There are also many different kinds
of paper, and these different kinds have different uses.
This pathfinder explores paper art in its many forms. The topic may be broken
into the key areas of:
 The history of paper – its invention and impact on the world
 The manufacture and composition of paper – how it is made, chemicals
used, how this affects artists’ papers
 Modern and contemporary paper art – sculpture, collage, book art etc.
 Contemporary applications of traditional methods – origami, joomchi and
papercuts
 Own artistic practice – making paper, choosing paper, projects and
techniques
The pathfinder does not cover paper recycling and sustainable practice, printing
and ink, consumer products, or the tension between crafts and art, as these
subjects diverge from the core aspects of paper art.
Students will have access to the St. George campus TAFE library as well as the
wider TAFE NSW Library Network, and the State Library of NSW.

EBSCOhost is one of the most widely used online research databases in the world.
Periodicals are updated as soon as the content is released, so that information is
always current, and the coverage of articles dates back to 1937. It is perfectly
suited to art students: a review by Library Journal states,“Experience tells us that
students use products they are familiar with, and Art & Architecture Complete has
both excellent content and a widely popular interface in its favour.” (January

thousand followers on Twitter. Hongkiat, and his team of tech-savvy
professionals, write on computers, internet technology, and design. His post
Masters of paper art and paper sculptures lists 22 contemporary artists and
showcases examples of their artworks, with links to their websites.
Students will appreciate the variety of techniques demonstrated in Hongkiat’s
selection. He has chosen artists from all over the world, with very different
approaches to constructing their artworks. High-definition photographs of the
paper artworks are the main focus of the post, with some brief biographical
details interspersed. His English grammar is a little broken, but this is no
obstacle to making himself perfectly understood.
No references or index are included on the post, but it does provide excellent

paper manufacturers, pulp manufacturers, paper chemicals, machinery,
recruitment, distribution, education, and waste paper management.
PaperOnWeb’s pulp and paper dictionary contains roughly 2500 paper related
terms and definitions and includes tables, charts, diagrams, photos, and links to
further information.
The dictionary is sorted under letter headings, which can be accessed via links in
a navigation bar across the top of the page, much like any internet directory. The
dictionary cannot be searched but must rather be browsed; it is expected that
the user knows the spelling of the term they are searching for. The website has

6. Basbanes, Nicholas A. On paper : the everything of its two thousand year
history, New York : Alfred A. Knopf, 2013.
Nicholas Basbanes, renowned author and New York Times journalist, explores
the history of paper; it’s origins, development, and impact on human culture. As
the title suggests, the book covers the entire history of papermaking, from its
invention in China, in the 2nd Century AD, to its usage today. It follows Basbanes’
journey from China to Japan to Arabia, tracing the story of paper, and recounts
the discoveries of all of the major players in paper’s history.
Basbanes’ humorous tone combined with concise technological explanations,
and evident passion for his subject, make this book suited for scholars, students,

history, craft and science.” BioResources, vol. 4, no. 4, 2009 : 1736-1792.
As papermaking technology spread through Asia and Europe, different cultures
developed different techniques for pulping, sheeting and drying paper fibres.
This peer-reviewed article explores these techniques, as well as the impact
papermaking had on these cultures. It includes technical explanations, diagrams,
and photographs of papermakers from various cultures, and is aimed at scholars
and paper engineers who can use this information to improve modern paper
manufacture.
It also includes information for artists who are interested in making paper, and
artists who use paper in their works, explaining how different kinds of paper are
suitable for different art forms, e.g. paper folding, paper cutting, collage.
Although technical in nature, the article is written simply and clearly, making it
appropriate for students, and as it was written in 2009, the information can be
counted upon to be up-to-date. The authors are esteemed paper technologists:
Professor Martin Hubbe lectures at North Carolina State University, and Cindy
Bowden is Director of the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum at Georgia Institute

8. Hunter, Dard. “Ts’ai Lun and the invention of paper,” in Papermaking :
the history and technique of an ancient craft, New York : A.A. Knopf, 1943 :
48-63.
Dard Hunter (1883-1966) dedicated his life to researching and perfecting
traditional papermaking techniques. He published several books on the subject,
some of which he printed and bound himself, on paper that he had, himself,
created. For his contributions to the field of handicrafts and cultural history, he
received four honorary doctorates forhis work, and was named honorary
curator by Harvard University.
The second chapter of his book Papermaking: the history and technique of an
ancient craft focuses on the invention of paper, telling the story of Ts’ai Lun (or
Cai Lun) and how he popularised papermaking in China. It includes images of
artifacts and paper artwork, and detailed descriptions of how paper became so
fundamental to human society, through developments in Japan and the Orient,
and its introduction into Europe.
Though an older text, Dard Hunter’s research is just as relevant as when he
wrote it in 1943, and now begins to garner its own historical significance.

Hannah Simmons’ Prezi presentation is short and practical; listing the ways
paper has changed human society. She lists the good and the bad, and touches on
some interesting points about the ways paper has been used throughout history.
It is reasonable to assume that Hannah Simmons is, herself, a student, and that
she created her Prezi for other students. There is no transcript of her
presentation accompanying her Prezi, and she undoubtedly would have
elaborated on some of her points, but the Prezi itself still contains useful
information and a references page is included at the end, with links to her
research. The information is well ordered, organised into simple bullet points,
and the design is sleek and professional.

presentation, which focuses on industrial paper production and paper
characteristics: brightness, coating, colour, grain, opacity, strength, thickness and
weight.
The presentation was made in 2012, to educate students about types of paper,
which makes it current and relevant, perfect for TAFE students. Though the
lecture transcript is not included, the information contained in the presentation
is informative, and covers all of the important areas to consider when identifying
paper types. Numerous diagrams and photographs illustrate and reinforce the
simple blurbs on different paper characteristics, and reveal the elaborate, highly
technical side of paper manufacture.

This article is an excerpt from Joe Schwarcz’s 2006 book Let Them Eat Flax, and
tells the story of paper, in terms of its chemical composition. It describes the
process of transition from cloth to wood fibres, and how scientists solved the
problems of discoloration, decomposition, and bleed. It is very comprehensive
and the information, compiled in 2006, is up-to-date..
Though quite specialised, the article is surprisingly clear. Schwarcz is the
director of McGill University's Office for Science and Society, and the article is
perfectly suited for tertiary students. His friendly, informative tone makes the
more complex technical passages easy to understand, as he explains how the
chemistry of paper changed over the years to become the product we know
today.

The article is a long one; Apai has included all 100 images on one page. The
images are organised into galleries under each artist’s name. Apai has chosen
not to include the title, date or medium of each artwork; rather he has provided
links to artists’ websites for those who require more information, preferring to
allow the artworks to speak for themselves. This makes research difficult, but
this method works for those who are simply seeking inspiration, or just want to

This article briefly explains how paper was invented, and then provides a guide
to making your own paper, including a recipe, using modern ingredients and
household items, and simple instructions.
Though simple, the instructions are thorough, and clear. Natalie Rosinsky is the
award-winning author of over 100 books and articles on science, nature and
history. Her article provides an excellent starting-point for students wishing to
make their own paper, or get a handle on the basics of the papermaking process.
The article is available online through GALE PowerSearch in the TAFE NSW

Paperistas is an Australian company that specialises in providing high quality
and rare papers online. The Paperistas website not only features a wide range of
specialty papers, but also offers guides on paper type, weight, and size, articles
on paper artists and papercrafts, and a newsletter full of paper ideas, artworks
and projects. The first issue of the newsletter comes with a beginner’s guide to
buying art and craft papers.
The website is very sophisticated, and beautifully designed. Tabs and sidebars
make navigation very straightforward. The guides are simple and easy to
understand, making them an excellent resource for art students. The guide to
paper weights may prove especially useful, as it covers Grams per Square Metre
(GSM), thickness and density of artists’ papers.
Though the site is clearly aimed at consumers, a lot of effort has been made to be
helpful and informative, for anybody with an interest in paper art. For artists,
papers can be chosen according to their style, region of origin, colour, weight,
and intended use, which is also great for students who need to know which
papers should be used with which media.

This page is dedicated to information on papercutting. It is an assemblage of
beginners’ guides, instructional videos, projects, templates, and links to purchase

  • 2. Terrence Whitehall Paper art : a pathfinder 2 Introduction This pathfinder is aimed at students studying the Diploma of Visual Arts (Course No. 10416) at the St. George campus of the Sydney Institute of TAFE: http://sydneytafe.edu.au/course-details/fine-arts-and-ceramics/visual-arts-vet- fee-help-28903#results These students learn about many forms of art, in different kinds of media, materials, in different artistic principles, and paper appears in many of these principles. Paper is one of the most important inventions in human history. It is used to keep records, to communicate, for currency, for weaponry, for cleaning, for packaging, for decorating, and plays an integral part in the creative process. Because of its extraordinary versatility, paper has always been a staple of artistic practice, whether as a surface or as a medium. It has had many artistic uses throughout history, from the origami of Japan to the papercuts of China, and continues to have a prominent place in contemporary art. Many artists use paper in sculpture, drawing, painting and printing. There are also many different kinds of paper, and these different kinds have different uses. This pathfinder explores paper art in its many forms. The topic may be broken into the key areas of:  The history of paper – its invention and impact on the world  The manufacture and composition of paper – how it is made, chemicals used, how this affects artists’ papers  Modern and contemporary paper art – sculpture, collage, book art etc.  Contemporary applications of traditional methods – origami, joomchi and papercuts  Own artistic practice – making paper, choosing paper, projects and techniques The pathfinder does not cover paper recycling and sustainable practice, printing and ink, consumer products, or the tension between crafts and art, as these subjects diverge from the core aspects of paper art. Students will have access to the St. George campus TAFE library as well as the wider TAFE NSW Library Network, and the State Library of NSW.

It contains 380 full-text periodicals, and abstracts for over 780 academic journals, as well as a collection of more than 63,000 images. EBSCOhost is one of the most widely used online research databases in the world. Periodicals are updated as soon as the content is released, so that information is always current, and the coverage of articles dates back to 1937. It is perfectly suited to art students: a review by Library Journal states,“Experience tells us that students use products they are familiar with, and Art & Architecture Complete has both excellent content and a widely popular interface in its favour.” (January 2001). Hongkiat, and his team of tech-savvy professionals, write on computers, internet technology, and design. His post Masters of paper art and paper sculptures lists 22 contemporary artists and showcases examples of their artworks, with links to their websites. Students will appreciate the variety of techniques demonstrated in Hongkiat’s selection. He has chosen artists from all over the world, with very different approaches to constructing their artworks. High-definition photographs of the paper artworks are the main focus of the post, with some brief biographical details interspersed. His English grammar is a little broken, but this is no obstacle to making himself perfectly understood. Hubbe, Martin A. & Bowden, Cindy. “Handmade paper : a review of its history, craft and science.” BioResources, vol. 4, no. 4, 2009 : 1736-1792. As papermaking technology spread through Asia and Europe, different cultures developed different techniques for pulping, sheeting and drying paper fibres. This peer-reviewed article explores these techniques, as well as the impact papermaking had on these cultures. It includes technical explanations, diagrams, and photographs of papermakers from various cultures, and is aimed at scholars and paper engineers who can use this information to improve modern paper manufacture. It also includes information for artists who are interested in making paper, and artists who use paper in their works, explaining how different kinds of paper are suitable for different art forms, e.g. paper folding, paper cutting, collage. Although technical in nature, the article is written simply and clearly, making it appropriate for students, and as it was written in 2009, the information can be counted upon to be up-to-date. The authors are esteemed paper technologists: Professor Martin Hubbe lectures at North Carolina State University, and Cindy Bowden is Director of the Robert C. Knopf, 1943 : 48-63. Dard Hunter (1883-1966) dedicated his life to researching and perfecting traditional papermaking techniques. He published several books on the subject, some of which he printed and bound himself, on paper that he had, himself, created. For his contributions to the field of handicrafts and cultural history, he received four honorary doctorates forhis work, and was named honorary curator by Harvard University. The second chapter of his book Papermaking: the history and technique of an ancient craft focuses on the invention of paper, telling the story of Ts’ai Lun (or Cai Lun) and how he popularised papermaking in China. It includes images of artifacts and paper artwork, and detailed descriptions of how paper became so fundamental to human society, through developments in Japan and the Orient, and its introduction into Europe. Though an older text, Dard Hunter’s research is just as relevant as when he wrote it in 1943, and now begins to garner its own historical significance. Fortunately, his book is available to view free online at: https://openlibrary.org/books/OL4572015M/Papermaking A PDF version of this chapter is available for download from the University of California, Santa Barbara: http://www.arts.ucsb.edu/faculty/reese/classes/papermaking/Dard%20Hunte r_%20Ts%27ai%20Lun.pdf

She lists the good and the bad, and touches on some interesting points about the ways paper has been used throughout history. It is reasonable to assume that Hannah Simmons is, herself, a student, and that she created her Prezi for other students. There is no transcript of her presentation accompanying her Prezi, and she undoubtedly would have elaborated on some of her points, but the Prezi itself still contains useful information and a references page is included at the end, with links to her research. The presentation was made in 2012, to educate students about types of paper, which makes it current and relevant, perfect for TAFE students. Though the lecture transcript is not included, the information contained in the presentation is informative, and covers all of the important areas to consider when identifying paper types. Numerous diagrams and photographs illustrate and reinforce the simple blurbs on different paper characteristics, and reveal the elaborate, highly technical side of paper manufacture. “Paper : manufacture and characteristics” can be found on the California State University, Sacramento website, here: http://www.csus.edu/indiv/c/cunninghamk/links/lectures/7paper_making.pdf

It is very comprehensive and the information, compiled in 2006, is up-to-date.. Though quite specialised, the article is surprisingly clear. Schwarcz is the director of McGill University's Office for Science and Society, and the article is perfectly suited for tertiary students. His friendly, informative tone makes the more complex technical passages easy to understand, as he explains how the chemistry of paper changed over the years to become the product we know today. Manufacturers produce paper in many different ways, and it can be difficult to know which kind of paper is best to use, when creating paper artworks. Printmaker Carmi Weingrod explores these methods, and advises which papers are best for cutting, folding, tearing, and printing. The article is organised into subheadings, which each focus on a technical element of paper, and how this applies when making art. American Artist is a magazine for artists so some technical knowledge is assumed; the article provides a good way for students to become acquainted with paper terminology. Retrieved November 19, 2014 from http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/05/100-extraordinary- examples-of-paper-art/ Walter Apai has assembled 100 images from 13 different artists, to showcase the amazing talent of contemporary artists who work primarily with paper. He focuses on examples of fine art, rather than commercial or functional paper artworks. The article is a long one; Apai has included all 100 images on one page. The images are organised into galleries under each artist’s name. Apai has chosen not to include the title, date or medium of each artwork; rather he has provided links to artists’ websites for those who require more information, preferring to allow the artworks to speak for themselves. This makes research difficult, but this method works for those who are simply seeking inspiration, or just want to marvel at the skill of the artists.
