Check the difference between both tenses

1. PAST SIMPLE
FORM
• Look at how the past simple is formed.

2. • Verbs already ending in - e just add -d: decide -> decided
• Many verbs are irregular and don’t end in -ed. (See the irregular verbs list).
• Note how did is used in questions and negative sentences.
Examples
My company launched a new product yesterday.
We didn’t finish work until 6 p.m. last night.
Why didn’t you come to the staff party?

3. USE
• The past simple is used to talk about:
-events in the past that are finished.
The presentation took place two weeks ago.
- periods of time in the past that are finished.
Did you spend the whole of last week in Istanbul?
• The past simple is often used with words such as
last (week/month/year), (two days) ago, yesterday and
in (2007/January).

Use the past continuous to describe an action in progress at a
specific time in the past.
