In 2002, Major Charles Ingram became the third contestant in Britain
to win £1 million on the famous game show, Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire?. The studio audience watched as Ingram answered all 15
questions correctly. However, as they discovered later, he didn’t do it
honestly.
Ingram was working with his wife and Tecwen Whittock, a man in the
audience. The three devised a simple plan. Whittock sat as close as
possible to Ingram and every time the game show host asked a
question, Ingram repeated the four possible answers. When Ingram
said the correct answer, Whittock coughed. Many people heard the
coughs and became suspicious.
Soon after the show, the police arrested Major Ingram, his wife and
Whittock. The judge heard their story and they had to return all the
money.
