In the UK, many teenagers do voluntary work as part of their
school curriculum. Young people spend a few hours of their
spare time every week working in different jobs, such as
babysitting, gardening or repairing computers. They don’t
get paid for this work but they enjoy it and get valuable
experience. For many, this experience is more valuable than
money.
One young volunteer, Andrew, says, “It’s great to give up
some spare time for others. I have worked as a volunteer for
a few months. It makes me feel good and the experience is
wonderful. It is good for everyone.”
In addition, many students don’t know what they want to do
when they leave school and this experience helps them
decide. Another volunteer, Rachel, says, “I think teenagers
can benefit from doing voluntary work before they make a
decision about their future. I know I’ve learned a lot about
myself from volunteering.”
