As a cloud architect one must be familiar with the pets vs cattle metaphor (Randy Bias & Bill Baker) – in the cloud, a VM is just another expandable resource! However, an IoT system may have to manage a huge number of devices, each one of them has a unique identity and a unique role. This is where the Pets vs Cattle metaphor fails – we need to handle pets in a cloud scale.
This lecture explains the complexity of the IoT problem domain and shows Azure SaaS and PaaS solution approaches: The Azure IoT Central and Azure IoT solution accelerators. We will be introduced to the Azure Device Provisioning Service (DPS) and see how it provides a scale approach to secure provisioning new IoT devices. We will explore the Azure IoT Hub and see its functional features and non-functional quality attributes such as security, scale, high-availability and health monitoring.
We will conclude the lecture with the future of IoT: "Smart Cloud and Intelligent edge" by presenting the Azure IoT Edge and Azure IoT Digital Twin.

Our job might be to build web applications, but we can't build apps that rely on networking if we don't know how these networks and the big network that connects them all (this thing called the Internet) actually work.
I'll walk through the basics of networking, then dive a lot deeper (from TCP/UDP to IPv4/6, source/destination ports, sockets, DNS and even BGP).
Prepare for an eye-opener when you realize how much a typical app relies on all of these (and many more) working flawlessly... and how you can prepare your app for failure in the chain.

Overview of the BonAHA framework for applications running in opportunistic wireless ad-hoc networks. Uses Apple's Bonjour (ZeroConf) technology. This was a presentation given to my lab.

If the number of spine switches were to be merely doubled, the effect of a single switch failure is halved. With 8 spine switches, the effect of a single switch failure only causes a 12% reduction in available bandwidth. So, in modern data centers, people build networks with anywhere from 4 to 32 spine switches. With a leaf-spine network, every server on the network is exactly the same distance away from all other servers – three port hops, to be precise. The benefit of this architecture is that you can just add more spines and leaves as you expand the cluster and you don't have to do any recabling. Intuition Systems will also get more predictable latency between the nodes.
As a trend, disaggregation seems to be most useful for very large companies like Facebook and Google, or cloud providers. The technology does not necessarily have significant implications for small or medium sized businesses. Historically, however, technology has a way of trickling down from the pioneering phases of existing only within large companies with tremendous resources, to becoming more standardized across the board.

As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User Endpoints
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
