What is Computer?
3
A computer is a machine or device that performs processes,
calculations and operations based on instructions provided by
a software or hardware program. It has the ability to accept
data (input), process it, and then produce outputs.
Computers can also store data for later uses in appropriate
storage devices, and retrieve whenever it is necessary.
Modern computers are electronic devices used for a variety of
purposes ranging from browsing the web, writing documents,
editing videos, creating applications, playing video games, etc.
Parts of Computer
Input devices
 Keyboard
 Mouse
 Joystick
Processing device
 Central
Processing Unit
(CPU)
Storage devices
 Hard Disk
 Compact Disk
 Pen Drive/Flash
Drive
Output devices
 Monitor
 Printer
 Speaker
A keyboard is a peripheral device
that enables a user to input text into
a computer or any other electronic
machinery. A keyboard is an input
device and is the most basic way
for the user to communicate with a
computer. This device is patterned
after its predecessor, the typewriter,
from which the keyboard inherited
its layout, although the keys or
letters are arranged to function as
electronic switches.
Input Devices
A mouse is a small device that a computer
user pushes across a desk surface in order to
point to a place on a display screen and to
select one or more actions to take from that
position.
In computers, a
joystick is
a cursor control
device used in
computer games
and assistive
technology .
Processing Device
All kinds of computing devices such as tablets,
PCs, or laptops feature a brain-like unit called the
central processing unit or CPU. Your computer's
CPU calculates and interprets instructions while
you're surfing the web, creating documents,
playing games, or running software programs
Storage Devices
A computer hard disk drive (HDD) is a non-volatile
data storage device. Non-volatile refers to storage
devices that maintain stored data when turned off.
All computers need a storage device, and HDDs
are just one example of a type of storage device.
A compact disc is a portable storage medium
that can be used to record, store and play
back audio, video and other data in digital form.
A USB flash drive is a device used for data storage
that includes a flash memory and an integrated
Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. Most USB
flash drives are removable and rewritable.
Physically, they are small, durable and reliable.
Output Devices
A monitor is an electronic visual computer display
that includes a screen, circuitry and the case in
which that circuitry is enclosed. Older computer
monitors made use of cathode ray tubes (CRT),
which made them large, heavy and inefficient.
A printer is
an external hardware output
device that takes the electronic data
stored on a computer or other device
and generates a hard copy. For
example, if you created a report on
your computer, you could print several
copies to hand out at a staff meeting.
Printers are one of the most popular
computer peripherals and are
commonly used to print text and
photos.
A computer
speaker is
an output hardw
are device that
connects to a
computer to
generate sound.
