Parts of speech are the basic step towards learning English Language. I have explained all the parts of speech in this ppt in an easy and concise manner.
3. A noun is a word that names a person , place,
concept , or object.
Basically anything that names a “thing” is a
noun
Example: ball , Ali , Paris , London
Common Noun: general names for things like
planet , city , girl etc.
Proper Noun : Specific names for things like
Mars, London, Sidra.
4. Pronouns are words that you substitute for
specific nouns when the reader or listener
already knows which specific noun you are
referring to.
Example: “Sara was supposed to be here at
eight”, then follow it with she is always late.
Some common pronouns: he ,she, it ,they
5. Adjectives are the words that describe nouns.
Think about your favorite movie. How would
you describe it to your friend who has never
seen it? You might say
The movie was funny, engaging ,well-written
or
My dress is green.
6. Verbs are specific words that describe
specific actions.
Example
Run fast.
Go there.
I am writing .
Not all verbs refer to literal action, though.
Verbs that refer to feelings or state of being
like to love or to be, are known as non action
verbs.
7. An adverb is a word that describes an
adjective, a verb, or another adverb.
Example
1. I entered the room quietly.
Quietly is describing how you entered (verb) the room.
2. A cheetah is always faster than a lion.
Always is describing how frequently a cheetah is faster
(adjective) than a lion.
8. Prepositions tell you the relationships
between other words in a sentence.
Example 1
You might say “I left my bike leaning against
the garage.”
In this sentence against is preposition because
is tells us where you left the bike.
Example 2
She puts the pizza in the oven.
9. Conjunctions make it possible to build
complex sentences that express multiple
ideas.
Example
“ I like chicken burger. I like beef burger. I
don’t like vegetable burger.”
Consider instead “ I like chicken burger and
beef burger but I don’t like vegetable burger.”
10. Interjection is a word that expresses some
sudden feeling; as,
Hurrah! We have won the game.
Alas! She is dead
11. They arrived soon after.( Adverb)
They arrived after us (Preposition)
They arrived after we had left. ( conjunction)
