EDDD 8085/EDSD 7085: Inspired Leadership, Informed Advocacy, and Improved Policy
The overall project involves two parts: the advocacy action plan paper and a presentation. The paper is your Learning Outcomes Plan.
Advocacy is the act of standing up for others, of building connections, of engaging in everyday acts. These activities might occur in daily connections or on a grand stage and serve to support children, families, and professionals connected to the field. Leading through advocacy has the capacity to impact others in the present, and in a wonderful rippling effect, for many years to come.
In completing this plan you will:
Apply leadership and advocacy skills to implement and manage strategic change
Evaluate local and global policy and policy development related to specific issues in early childhood
Evaluate cultural influences on local and global policy in early childhood (especially through the lenses of stakeholders and collaborating organizations)
Demonstrate evidence-based decision making, integrating principles of equity, ethics, and social justice and advocacy
Include a minimum of 10 resources from peer-reviewed journals and six from advocacy organizations and/or recognized experts on the topic. All sources require APA-formatted citations at the end of the paper.
In Module 4 of this course, you will submit an advocacy action plan. The plan itself, due Day 1 of Week 11, requires that you select an advocacy topic you are passionate about and connect with an organization in planning the development of your plan.
In Week 3 of this course, you will submit to your Instructor your advocacy action plan topic and your rationale for your selection. You will identify the organization and how any collaboration on the plan might occur.

Overview
For the first part of your final project, the critical analysis portfolio, you will select a specific issue or event in globalization and critically analyze it through the
four general education lenses: history, humanities, social sciences, and natural and applied sciences. By viewing the issue or event through these lenses, you will
gain insight into how the interconnected nature of globalization affects society as well as both your own individual framework of perception and the choices,
attitudes, and behaviors of others in the world around you.
For this fourth milestone, due in Module Six, you will analyze your issue or event in globalization through the lenses of the natural and applied sciences and the
social sciences. Like Milestone Two, this task provides you with an opportunity to dive deeper into your analysis of the issuer or event through these two lenses.

Imagine living your life without any problems to solve or obstacles to overcome. What if everyone you encounter held the same beliefs and opinions that you do? How would you continue to learn and mature, without the lessons provided through conflict? Because conflict and adversity are nearly unavoidable, the social worker’s focus often is on helping clients resolve and learn from conflict, in order to continue the progress toward their goals. An understanding of the theories about why conflict exists and how it functions in people’s lives provides the foundation from which social workers can best assist clients in coping with and resolving the conflicts they face.

The practicum is designed to help you develop as a scholar practitioner and health leader to promote positive social change in your community. The practicum is an active learning experience that provides you with the opportunity to apply nursing knowledge and skills that you are acquiring in NURS 4020 to current or past experiences in a healthcare setting. The practicum is comprised of selected onsite experiences and weekly practicum discussions. Throughout your practicum experience you will collaborate with leaders and other colleagues, with fellow students in practicum discussion groups, and with your faculty. Each week of the course outlines specific activities or reflections you will engage in during your practicum as you complete your proposed Practicum Change Project. The purpose of the Practicum Change Project is for you to design and offer a change project specific to your work setting to be implemented once the course is over and once approved by management at your setting. The team discussion provides an avenue for you to share ideas, to critique each other’s work, and to offer support to each other. Your instructor will visit your team site to offer guidance as needed. The team discussion is meant to be relaxed and enjoyable. Have fun!

As with all areas of the social work process, cultural competence is essential when engaging and assessing a child’s concerns. Being culturally competent includes understanding the unique needs of your client and asking how those needs can be fulfilled. Project Overview and Timeline
The Individual Project Assignments in this course are designed to provide you with a
practical understanding of project management activities in a health care organization.
In each of these three Assignments you have the option of interviewing an individual
who has managed real-life projects about selected aspects related to project
management, or you may choose to write a scholarly paper in which you draw insights
from published articles describing organizations’ experiences in health care information
technology projects. Either of these experiences will help you develop a first-hand
understanding of project management challenges and strategies within one or more
organizations.
The Individual Project Assignments are woven throughout the course and aligned with
course content. For each experience, the completion of a written Assignment aligned to
one of the following experiences is required:
Interview: Interview an individual with project management experience in an
organization of your choosing about one or more designated topics.
OR
Scholarly Paper: Examine a minimum of three organizations that have published
descriptions about a health care information technology project.
Tips and Guidelines
Interview
As you conduct an interview, note your observations, thoughts, and insights regarding
the individual’s roles and functions and how they are carried out. For each individual
interview, address the questions provided in the Topics and Questions section (in Week
2, Week 5, and Week 7) of this document. Keep in mind, though, that responses to the
questions represent the minimum amount of information required in the paper. You are
encouraged to explore the questions fully with thought-provoking follow-up questions.
Your paper should include the individual’s responses to your questions, and—after
some reflection—your analysis of the interviewee’s responses. Write the first draft of
your paper immediately following the interview so all of the information is fresh in your
mind. As you write, reflect upon the topics covered in this course, and synthesize your
knowledge of those topics with what you discussed during the interview.

Week 3: Conflict Theories
Imagine living your life without any problems to solve or obstacles to overcome. What if everyone you encounter held the same beliefs and opinions that you do? How would you continue to learn and mature, without the lessons provided through conflict? Because conflict and adversity are nearly unavoidable, the social worker’s focus often is on helping clients resolve and learn from conflict, in order to continue the progress toward their goals. An understanding of the theories about why conflict exists and how it functions in people’s lives provides the foundation from which social workers can best assist clients in coping with and resolving the conflicts they face.
This week, you evaluate the appropriateness of conflict theories for specific populations and compare their application to social work practice.

Practicum Change Project
The practicum is designed to help you develop as a scholar practitioner and health leader to promote positive social change in your community. The practicum is an active learning experience that provides you with the opportunity to apply nursing knowledge and skills that you are acquiring in NURS 4020 to current or past experiences in a healthcare setting. The practicum is comprised of selected onsite experiences and weekly practicum discussions. Throughout your practicum experience you will collaborate with leaders and other colleagues, with fellow students in practicum discussion groups, and with your faculty. Each week of the course outlines specific activities or reflections you will engage in during your practicum as you complete your proposed Practicum Change Project. A complete description is presented on the Practicum discussion page of each week and a brief outline of the activities is presented below. The practicum for NURS 4020 is a minimum of 45 hours.

Each week, your instructor will assign a discussion to the class. Within an instructor-assigned discussion team, you will participate in a total of six discussions for this project. Satisfactory completion of these six discussions and a PowerPoint Presentation of your Practicum Change Project will satisfy the requirement for the practicum.
The purpose of the Practicum Change Project is for you to design and offer a change project specific to your work setting to be implemented once the course is over and once approved by management at your setting. The team discussion provides an avenue for you to share ideas, to critique each other’s work, and to offer support to each other. Your instructor will visit your team site to offer guidance as needed. The team discussion is meant to be relaxed and enjoyable. Have fun!

Assignment 1: Cultural Competence
As with all areas of the social work process, cultural competence is essential when engaging and assessing a child’s concerns. Being culturally competent includes understanding the unique needs of your client and asking how those needs can be fulfilled. Using an empowerment perspective treating clients as experts on their lives and their needs is essential. Not only does this establish your commitment to being culturally sensitive and aware, but it will enhance the therapeutic relationship. While it is essential to learn and master social work skills and techniques to be a successful practitioner, another significant indicator of a successful intervention is the relationship a social worker builds with his or her client. Some research suggests that the quality of the therapeutic relationship will account for 30% of the clinical outcome of the treatment (Miller, Duncan, and Hubble, 2005, as stated in Walsh, 2010, p. 7). Exhibiting a dedication to learning about a client’s culture, history, and current environmental factors exemplifies a social worker’s desire to build that client–worker bond.
For this Assignment, read the case study for Claudia (in attachments) and find two to three scholarly articles on social issues surrounding immigrant families.

Individual Project Overview
Project Overview and Timeline
The Individual Project Assignments in this course are designed to provide you with a
practical understanding of project management activities in a health care organization.
In each of these three Assignments you have the option of interviewing an individual
who has managed real-life projects about selected aspects related to project
management, or you may choose to write a scholarly paper in which you draw insights
from published articles describing organizations’ experiences in health care information
technology projects. Either of these experiences will help you develop a first-hand
understanding of project management challenges and strategies within one or more
organizations.
The Individual Project Assignments are woven throughout the course and aligned with
course content. For each experience, the completion of a written Assignment aligned to
one of the following experiences is required:
Interview: Interview an individual with project management experience in an
organization of your choosing about one or more designated topics.
OR
Scholarly Paper: Examine a minimum of three organizations that have published
descriptions about a health care information technology project.
Tips and Guidelines
Interview
As you conduct an interview, note your observations, thoughts, and insights regarding
the individual’s roles and functions and how they are carried out. For each individual
interview, address the questions provided in the Topics and Questions section (in Week
2, Week 5, and Week 7) of this document. Keep in mind, though, that responses to the
questions represent the minimum amount of information required in the paper. You are
encouraged to explore the questions fully with thought-provoking follow-up questions.
Your paper should include the individual’s responses to your questions, and—after
some reflection—your analysis of the interviewee’s responses. Write the first draft of
your paper immediately following the interview so all of the information is fresh in your
mind. As you write, reflect upon the topics covered in this course, and synthesize your
knowledge of those topics with what you discussed during the interview.

Try to match your Assignment setting to your professional goals. Consider interviewing
someone in your own organization or in an organization where you might want to work
as a nurse informaticist after you graduate.
If you are unable to complete the Individual Project Assignments with a project manager
in a health care organization, search for an individual who has managed a project,
preferably a technology project, in another type of setting. If you are unable to find an
interviewee, you must complete the scholarly paper option.
