Building a Digital Museum: Opportunities for Scholarship and LearningNITLE
Most students and researchers of the theatre arts would seize the chance to stroll through a virtual museum featuring work by one of the world’s most prolific producers of scenic, costume, and lighting designs. That was the vision presented to Furman University when they were given the extraordinary opportunity to digitize the life’s work of renowned New York theatre designer, producer, painter, sculptor, and photographer Peter Wexler. The opportunity also presented a challenge. For a small staff at a liberal arts college, developing a strategy to digitally archive more than 6,000 artifacts within a tight timeframe could be daunting. Before converting the first item into digital format, consideration had to be given to how the collection might be used for teaching and scholarship. Furman’s Digital Collections Center is tackling this challenge as they document the creative process from preliminary sketches to final productions. In their presentation for NITLE Shared Academics, Furman University’s James B. Duke Library colleagues Rick Jones, manager of the Digital Collections Center, and Christy Allen, assistant director for Discovery Services, detailed the strategy and process of digitizing Peter Wexler’s work and how they prepared for the ways in which it will support teaching and scholarship.
Presented by Catherine Worrall at the Annual Conference of the Visual Resources Association, April 18th - April 21st, 2012, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Session: Emerging new roles for VR professionals: research into and beyond the arts
At a time of international financial instability, with positions constantly under threat, analogue collections facing forced closure and space at a premium, this session will hear from VR professionals who are reinventing themselves and evolving roles in changing landscapes, pushing into new disciplines and spaces.
Each speaker will discuss the new roles they have taken on, either by accident or design and how their experiences are shaping their view of the VR profession in “the tens”. In many cases this has meant working across disciplines; making their professional presence felt in the classroom and the boardroom; developing new skills but in all cases, broadening their horizons through collaboration.
Speakers will discuss supporting courses beyond traditional visual arts, design and art history; collaborating with libraries, IT and faculty in course development and delivery; working with artists and archivists to preserve and expose their work, collections and archives; building repositories; involvement in project funding applications; working in arts research and coordinating non-traditional research outputs.

Developing a framework for delivering a personalised online digital literacie...Trisha Poole
Digital literacies are a critical aspect of being an active and engaged member of 21st century society, and it is important to provide English as a second language (ESL) speakers with opportunities to develop their digital literacies in English. However, pedagogy and content specifically focusing on digital literacies are routinely lacking in initial ESL teacher training. Compounding this is that in-service ESL teacher professional learning is often not focused on digital literacies or does not adequately consider the specific contextual constraints and sensitivities that in-service ESL teachers face. Therefore, a professional learning course that is focused on digital literacies and personalised to individual ESL teacher contexts is needed in order to address this gap. This paper discusses the need for in-service ESL teacher training on digital literacies and presents the nascent development of a framework that will be used to deliver personalised online professional learning (POPL) that addresses these needs. The framework incorporates four critical aspects of effective professional learning: personalisation, social constructivism, situatedness, and extended time frames.
