Mass Media and Society, Chapter 1: Media and Cultureczavisca

Recent cases from the UK and US show religious identification in stories can be problematic and even lead to false accusations. The field of studying "religion and media" has grown and looks at how religion is framed in coverage. While regulations exist, more may be needed to improve reporting and address ongoing complaints about coverage of religion.
The document discusses issues around media representation of religion in New Zealand. It notes that both the media landscape and religious demography are diverse. Minority religious groups often feel dissatisfied with stereotypical or sensationalized portrayals. The author argues that journalists need better training and expertise around religions to competently cover religious topics and dimensions of news stories. Establishing a working group to develop guidelines around responsible and accurate religious coverage could help address these issues.

World Communication Day was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 to encourage reflection on opportunities and challenges of modern communication. It is celebrated annually on the Sunday before Pentecost. Pope Francis' 2015 message focuses on communication within families, emphasizing that families can teach us to communicate through blessing rather than cursing and bringing people together through acceptance. The document provides an overview of World Communication Day's history and themes addressed by popes from 1967 to 2015.
Paulines live and work in and through the media culture. In order to be an evangelizing presence, we are called to be critical engagers and discerning creators of the media so as to teach this to others. Involving the whole person, mind, will, and heart, we evaluate our own media experience through the media mindfulness methodology.

Media Mindfulness Catechesis - Forming Digital Disciples.pdfSr Nancy Usselmann
This document discusses incorporating media mindfulness into catechesis. It provides a prayer for media mindfulness and quotes from popes on the importance of media education. It defines media mindfulness as media literacy from a faith perspective using models like lectio divina. The goal is forming disciples who are engaged and critical users of media to reach people in their whole person - mind, will, heart. It suggests combining spiritual practices with media literacy to form people in Christ within popular culture. The document encourages catechists to consider how they can incorporate these ideas of media mindfulness into their own ministry.
These are slides which accompanied a presentation given at the University of St. Michael's College in the University of Toronto for a conference focused on gender equity issues.
Media has a significant cultural impact by acting as a medium for communicating and spreading culture to large groups. As an interlinked system, media both shapes and is shaped by culture. It affects culture by potentially diminishing traditions, impacting relationships, and creating new norms across age groups through long-distance spread of ideas. Conversely, culture bounds and influences media through conveyed values and representations that may differ across age groups. Overall, media and culture have a reciprocal relationship where each continuously changes the other over time through shifts in things like clothing, music, education, relationships, and ways of thinking.
Media play many different - and maybe incompatible- roles. For the audiences, it is a source of entertainment and information while for media workers, media is an industry that offer jobs- and therefore income, prestige and professional identity-. For the owners, the media is a source of profit and a source of political power.

Lição 12: João 15 a 17 – O Espírito Santo e a Oração Sacerdotal | 2° Trimestr...OmarBarrezueta1
Astronism, Cosmism and Cosmodeism: the space religions espousing the doctrine...Cometan
This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.
Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.

11. The vision of ‘comunio’
• “The media of social communications can contribute a
great deal to human unity. So among the wonderful
technical inventions which foster communication
among human beings, Christians find means that have
been decided under God’s providence for the
encouragement of social relations … men are led to a
mutual understanding and shared ambition, and this in
turn includes them to justice and peace, to goodwill and
active charity, to mutual help, to love, and in the end, to
communion. The world of communications, then,
provides some of the most effective means for the
cultivation of that charity among men which is at one
the cause and the expression of fellowship.” Communio
et Progressio, nos. 250,253
12. Evangelii Nuntiandi (1975)
“The use of the means of social communications
presents a challenge: through them the
evangelical message should reach vast numbers
of people, but with the capacity of piercing the
conscience of each individual, of implanting
itself in his heart as though he were the only
person being addressed, with all his most
individual and personal qualities, and evoke an
entirely personal adherence and commitment.”
(no. 45)
13. Aetatis Novae (1992)

maintaining financial support adequate to the carrying out of the
pastoral plan - Aetatis Novae, Feb. 1992, n. 452.
