•Those that dare to think big, be open to ideas, learn from others = success
•Complemented by the ability to stay focussed, stay consistent much satisfaction from being recognised especially by winning big on small tasks
•They thrive with face to face communication and want to be catered to – demand quality service and interactions and positive feedback
•Value rewards in terms of flexibility rather than $ - will be living at home forever!!

13. Is it best to go to Uni to get a
better Job??
It Depends…
"A degree is very rarely enough to get you into a high-paying job — what gets you in to those better quality and
high-paying jobs is experience, and the right kind of attitude and personal qualities.“
If you are not prepared academically and struggle through a Degree, you may not get a job in a related field… you
may end up competing with TAFE graduates and school leavers for the same job in hospitality or retail. What will
your Resume look like?
Opportunities for VET graduates – very similar starting salaries, many areas of VET shortage. Cert 4 and above
$64000 vs Degree $61000 – depends on area industry
It all depends on how you have networked through your Degree, what opportunities you have seized – your soft
skills. One third of your time needs to be devoted to engaging in activities that will develop and prove your soft
skills or special human qualities
And you need to have a genuine interest , passion and zeal.. And the right opportunity to present itself...

St Michael’s College Grade
Term 3 Report. A measure of a student’s performance against criteria set here at St Michaels. In many cases it is based on not yet moderated
assessment and obviously does not include final external assessments such as exams.
Subject Achievement Grade on SACE Record of Achievement Certificate –
https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/students/assessments-and-results/assessment#title#section4
Reflection of a students performance against the set criteria in that subject only.
The grade is derived from a “moderated” Raw Score out of 150 – all the specified & weighted components stated in the Assessment guidelines by
SACE.
For example a score of a B- in Subject X may come from:
Folio (20%) B / Skills Task (50%) C- / External Assessment (30%) A-
This is then equated to a score out of 150. SACE have published a table showing the Numeric Value of SACE Grades.
From the score out of 150 a Grade is awarded (for example if the raw score is 90 that may equate with a C+)
Scaled Score /20 is on a students 2020 Tertiary Entrance Statement
http://www.sace.sa.edu.au/c/document_library/get_file?uuid=60a80bb6-f17b-4abc-8b2a-05b4c3ec49f3&groupId=10336
used by SATAC to calculate a University and or TAFE Aggregate.
Every student in a particular subject with the same moderated Raw Score ( /15) is Scaled the same way.
In the Scaling process the “average mean raw” score in each subject is then compared to all the other subject combinations and their individual
“average mean raw score”. So subjects can be added together, there is a very complicated adjustment process called Scaling. By applying Scaling
it provides a way to compare / add dissimilar subjects for the purpose of Tertiary Entrance. Scaling is based on the score out of 150 not the Subject
Achievement Grade. This year finer denominators to two decimal points – so bigger range possible.

19. External Assessments
“The SACE Board applies grades and corresponding numerical equivalents to the external assessment component.
In the case of the external assessment component, the type of result that a student receives depends upon the
type of external assessment undertaken in the subject. In the case of subjects with an investigation or a
performance/product, the external assessment is marked on a scale of 0 to 30 with reference to the performance
standards and grade levels. The investigations and performances/products are double-marked with
complementary supervisory procedures. These marks are used in the final subject score calculations.
In the case of subjects with an examination (or similar), the external assessment is marked on a numeric scale and
the External Assessment Grade Panel will make judgements regarding the external assessment grade levels
assigned to the external assessment scores. These judgements will vary from year to year, and from subject to
subject. For example, the Stage 2 Biology examination is out of 200. The External Assessment Grade Panel may
determine that scores between 160 and 180 out of 200 are an A standard for that particular examination. Any
student who scored between 160 and 180 for the examination would be awarded an A for the examination
component. Note also that a score that rounds to 14 on the 15 point scale is also equivalent to an A (i.e. scores in
the range 13.5 to 14.4). In the case of the Biology example above, this would mean that the range of raw
examination marks 160 to 180 would be assigned to final external assessment results in the range 13.5 to 14.4.
This example is summarised in the following table: Examination Score / 200 External grade External numerical
value 180 – 200 A 14.5 – 15.0 160 – 180 A 13.5 – 14.4 … … … These procedures operate for each Stage 2
subject. An example of the results this procedure may yield for Stage 2 Biology is shown next

As Recognised Studies:

VET is pass fail so how do you get a scaled
score:
Best 3 x 20 TAS plus next best TAS /10
Divide by 70 x 20 = /20
23. More on Scaling
Scaling can and does change year to year.
Scaling impacts more so in the Raw Score equiv of A- to B grade bands.
Scaling impacts more in subjects which do not have significant Public Exam.
No subject gets scaled up or down as a whole subject.
Be aware you could get all B and B+ and not get a good enough ATAR to get into desired University course.
Critical that students are in dialogue with their teachers about how the are going and what they can do to improve.
Students should be very aware of how that grade in that subject was scaled last year.
Can’t alter impact of scaling ….only level of achievement.

29. Aggregate to ATAR to Selection Rank
Each year students Aggregate scores out of 90 are put into a Rank order
The Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank
For the courses that accept Adjustment Factors a new Aggregate is calculated
inclusive of Bonus points and then put into the Australian Tertiary Selection Rank for
use in South Australia. This is called Selection Rank
Note: Subject Bonus Points not considered for some courses, Medicine, Vet
Bioscience, Oral Health and Uni Adel Physio, OT, Speech Pathology – but Equity

38. Course Preference Selection
• Eligibility SACE ATAR Prerequisites C- or better (Precluded Combinations Counting Restrictions Rules Apply)
• May be Additional Application Requirements
• Check what services does “THAT” uni offer, location etc
• Course match to student skills abilities, esp next year with ease to get into Uni Adel courses. If a listed Assumed
Knowledge they will not devote many resources to helping students catch up – at your own peril!
• Course Investigation 1st Yr subjects
• Opportunities for placements exchanges internships
• credits into other courses, costs, exam and exam weighting.
• Be careful to put in Semester 1 OR mid Year depending when you want to begin
• Flexibility: Moving from one to another Tertiary Transfers & GPA ..Not that easy!
• TAFE- Uni
• Why do so many students change courses?
• Broader awareness and understanding of self and opportunities .. Find passion!
• Uni Adelaide Research Over 50 percent of First Year University Students make a change to their course of study by
the end of first year – Some change whole pathways! Or even to other Universities
39. SATAC The Basics
• SATAC UNI Undergraduate Institutions: Uni of Adelaide, Flinders Uni, UniSA, CQ Un, Charles Darwin Uni, Tabor Uni and 2
private Non HECS Uni – Torrens Uni and SAIBT (different Loan Systems)
• Up to 6 Preferences for Uni and or (4) TAFE www.satac.edu.au

• Interstate SATAC equivalents Check in advance especially closing dates, Bonus Point process and other application
requirements.
• One offer possible in each system and can have more than one for TAFE
• Uni Application Deadline: 30th September August 20th Uni Adel Yr 11 Scheme
• TAFE: ASAP from 3rd August but need to complete Course Admission Requirements by 19th November. Change of
preferences by 27th Nov for Early offer round.
• Other Application Requirements and Special Dates.
• Music Auditions TBA
• Adding or rearranging preferences for Equal Consideration by due dates Jan7 Uni SATAC
• Entering and sending Cert 3 results – esp for some Flinders Course. But not compulsory.
• Changing preferences for most OK up to 7 Jan Uni & TAFESA depends on Dec or Jan offer rounds.
• Need to check carefully “That “ particular course still open and can be added. (For Uni: If initial application done by 30th Sept
then there are only 5 courses that cannot be added after 30th Sept BUT if you add a preference with a RED note on the
SATAC Website after “Closing Date” you may not get Equal Consideration.
• The cost of on time application is $45 Uni and must be paid to be eligible for offer on Jan15th (Due Date TBC) $185 late fee
after 30th Sept) and TAFE applications are free & on time STAT Test i.e. booked by 30th Sept and paid by 31st Oct = $170
Late STAT $235
41. Considering the STAT Test
• STAT run by ACER but applications though SATAC
• 70 Question Multiple Choice test
• Quite expensive .. Especially if apply late
• Must be 18 by 31st Jan 2021- 18 on the day of 1st Feb
2021 for SA universities to accept
• Can be used for many courses in the place of Yr 12
Selection Rank ATAR (not all)
• Sometimes it is combined with other requirements to
give a Special Entry Score – depends on the Uni and
the Course
• See: https://www.satac.edu.au/pages/undergraduate-
admission-pathways
• And for sample questions See: https://stat.acer.org/au
43. SATAC Offers January 15th
Only one offer possible – whatever is the highest on list for
which your Selection Rank ATAR satisfies.
44. Interstate
Similar to SATAC, you can apply for each State and get offer for each State
See Page 10 SATAC Guide Applying Interstate
Note: often English is a Pre Req – but not always and different. Many accept “Pearson's Test of
Academic English” or Uni of Adelaide Maths Track or Subjects through UniLearn
Bonus Point Policies differ & often requires separate application.
If you have ANY interest in applying interstate, it is imperative you email the Admission Officer at
the relevant Uni to see what is the ruling for students from South Australia or come and see Ms
Coorey
Many of our students interested in Medicine end up applying around Australia –
for example James Cook Uni in Townsville not require UCAT but has PreReq Assignments and
Interview, Bond No UCAT but does have special aptitude/ psychological test and is expensive
Bond 2021 Scholarships close Friday 7th August:
45. Costs of Study Uni
• https://www.studyassist.gov.au/
• CSP – limit around $120 000 in lifetime,
deferrable Repayment start at small percentage
over $46000 income
• 2021 proposed Changes: will now be by
subjects not area of degree
• The University may also have Student Services
and Amenities fees
• There may be equipment and uniform charges
etc and often books can be quite
• expensive too.
• Non HECS CSP Courses that are approved can

46. TAFESA
• Apply through SATAC free
• TAFESA Course Admission Requirements – vary by course
• TAFESA Selection Criteria when deemed Competitive
• Worker Application Cannot apply unless supported by relevant Employer
• Campus – different degrees of competitiveness add as separate preference
• CSPA – access to subsidized funding and even selection
• Issue of two or more Certificate 3 and above – Full Fee
• Value of TAFESA Before Uni
48. TAFESA
www.tafesa.edu.au
TAFE Course Admission Requirements CAR must be met to be eligible to apply for TAFE Courses There is no CAR for Non
Competitive Certificates 1, 11 and 111.
Minimum CAR exist for Competitive Cert 1, 11 and 111 and for all Cert 4 and above. Minimum CAR is usually one of the
following: SACE Completion, VET Qualification or CSPA Test (Basic Numeracy Literacy TEST)
In each course descriptor page it states if there is a Competitive Entry Course. As soon as it is deemed Competitive it will
then show CAR and also will have TAB showing Selection Criteria used to rank applicants. These could be VET
Qualification, SACE Completion and associated CSPA Score or even score on Portfolio or Written Test and Interview (See
Cert 4 Dental Assisting)
Increasingly, related lower level courses have become part of the Selection Criteria
Note WorkReady Funding Rules:
No Cert 1 or 2 if have SACE and only access to two equal and above Cert 3 courses – other than that full fee paying. That
means if you already have one Cert 3 whilst at school you are only entitled to one more subsidised course at TAFE.
If you go from school to Uni then back to TAFE and have achieved a Cert 3 whilst at school – by the time you head back
to TAFE you will be up for a full fee paying course
Consider value of going to TAFE before Uni – get job ready from the beginning – marketing, nursing etc.
49. TAFESA Continued
There are different modes but if only Worker Applications exists this means can only apply if employed and employer supports
i.e. Students can’t apply unless in Traineeship or Apprenticeship Example Cert 1V in Dental Assisting
Some complicated entry pathways
Ad Dip Oral Health.
Has many CAR including Written Assessment and then competitive Selection Criteria
Photography CAR – Cert IV or Portfolio
Acting, Dance etc CAR require Audition
Moving from TAFE to Uni – Very clear pathways/ credit save $HECS debt, practical aspect to employability
Do not assume if I miss out on Uni I can go to TAFE – often more competitive entry…and you must adhere to application dates.
TAFE offers all levels of qualifications from Advanced Diplomas to Short Courses right through to dual awards with all three
Universities.
Certificate 1.2.3.4 courses require payment – cannot defer like a VET Loan, may get permission to pay in instalments
52. CSPA Test
• Core Skills Profile for Adults: Multiple Choice and some Text Writing Covers: Reading Writing and Numeracy
• It is compulsory part of Course Admission Requirements for some courses and used in some competitive courses
to rank applicants
• It is usually required as a way to access cheaper subsidized position – otherwise could face full fee
• No preparation materials or practice questions outside of the Short TAFESA Course online:
https://www.tafesa.edu.au/xml/course/sc/sc_T957689394.aspx
• Very Important to book in and do it well before deadline of
Nov 24th for Round 1 offer and Dec 3rd for Round 2 offers
• https://www.tafesa.edu.au/apply-enrol/cspa
53. TAFESA Costs
“Work Ready” Certificate I and II are only accessible and free for certain groups. The majority of Certificate III and IV
courses will be partially funded by the South Australian Government.
See Skills Gateway Work Ready Funding: www.skills.sa.gov.au/students/subsidised-training/find-a-training-course
Very limited places in courses deemed not skilled shortage area –last year Dip Fitness course?? Note: Diploma
Beauty Therapy not subsidised and costs $20,000.
The TAFE Tuition & TAFE amenities costs beyond the set fee and these will be specified on the TAFE WEBSITE
Fees vary by course, caps on number of courses you can do under Skills for All Funding. Areas of National Priority are much cheaper. 2 year
Diploma of Early Childhood and Care relatively cheap at $5000 but a 12 month of another course could cost $12000.
For the majority of courses at Approved Registered Training Providers including TAFE there is a VET Student Loan
Help program available like the HECS Loan system for Diploma and above. https://www.studyassist.gov.au/vet-
students/vet-student-loans
Note for Associate Degrees that are not HECS approved then can get Fee Help but it attracts a 25% Loan Fee
https://www.tafesa.edu.au/apply-enrol/fee-help
TAFESA also has a Fee by Instalments payment option if approved.
