Structures
What is
parallelism?
 using the same pattern of
words to show that two or
more ideas have the same
level of importance.
 It is when phrases in a
structure have similar
or the same
grammatical structure.
Examples of
Parallelism
A. “it is better to give
than receiving”
B. “it is better to give
than to receive”
A. “simple is
beauty”
B. “simplicity is
beauty”
Which word among the
following has a
different grammatical form?
Dig, Cook, Dance, Singing
When a series is composed
of verbs, do not mix other
forms.
For example, mixing
infinitive (basic form) with
a gerund (ends with -ing)
breaks parallel structure.
A. I like to jog, bake, paint, and
watch movies.
B.I like to jog, bake, paint, and
watching movies.
C. I like jogging, baking, panting,
and watching movies
Another point to remember,
Parallel words. On the word
level, a noun should be group
with other nouns, an adjective
with other adjectives, and so
on.
A. The company is looking
for a candidate who is
friendly, organized,
meticulous, and is going to
arrive to work on time.
B. The company is
looking for a candidate
who is friendly,
organized, meticulous,
and punctual.
Another point to remember,
Parallel structure should be
used to balance a series of
phrases with the same
grammatical structure.

• Maintaining parallel
structure helps you avoid
grammatically incorrect
sentences and improves
your writing style.
Although, lack of parallelism is
not always strictly incorrect,
sentences with parallel structure
are easier to read and add a
sense of balance to your writing.

To achieve parallelism,
there must be the same
grammatical structure
among the elements in your
sentence.
Simple uses of parallelism create
readable and understandable
passages. Sentences are best
understood when structures in a
grammatical parallel fashion.
INDEPENDENT
ACTIVITY 1
Read the sentences carefully and
check if the sentences have parallel
structures. If the structure is parallel,
write CORRECT on your answer
sheet. If the structure is NOT
parallel, change the underlined word
to make the sentence parallel.
1. Pio visited and
enjoyed travelling around
South Korea.
2. The hotel he booked was
clean, affordable and does
not have any broken
fixtures.
3. Someday Enzo would
like to travel, see, and
experience other Asian
countries.
4. He particularly would
like to visit Japan,
Taiwan, and where the
Thais are.
5. Before he can travel, he
needs to write an essay, do
a film review, and focus on
his studies first.
6. He likes reading about
Asian countries and to
listen to their music.
7. North and South
Korean history interests
and is engaging for
Enzo.
8. Their culture,
traditions and what they
eat in Korea are also
interesting.
9. Koreans also have a
way of taking care of
their skin and body.
10. There are a lot of
Korean businesses in
Pampanga that offer Korean
cuisine, and KPop
merchandise.

grammatical structures.

show faulty parallelism: beautiful
pictures, loudly singing, playing
volleyball with friends, to cook
pasta for dinner.
10. The statement Espinoza's
style was remarkable for its
dexterity, grace, and she could
play any position, uses parallel
nouns.
