So Much to Overcome Position Paper

In your documented 3-4 page position paper, you will present an
arguable opinion responding to the
issue you choose from the options below. Your goal in this pape
r is to convince me that your position is
valid and worth listening to. (Not necessarily to convince me to
change my position). Within the paper,
you are to address all sides of the issue, persuading me that you
r knowledge is well-founded. That
means that you must support your argument with evidence to en
sure the validity of your claims, as well
as address the counterclaims to show that you are well-informed
about both sides. In-text citations
and a bibliography or works cited page is required. You may eit
her use Turabian (Chicago Manual
of Style) or APA format.
Analyzing an Issue and Developing an Argument
You should do some research on the subject matter chosen. Whi
le you may already have a position on
your topic and an idea about which side of the argument you wa
nt to take, you need to ensure that your
position is well supported. Supporting evidence will likely inclu
de a combination of the following:
1. Factual Knowledge - Information that is verifiable and agreed
upon by almost everyone.
2. Statistical Inferences - Interpretation of the facts.
3. Informed Opinion - Opinion developed through research and/
or expertise.
4. Personal Testimony - Personal experience related by a knowl
edgeable party.
The Paper
1. Introduction which introduces the topic, provides background
, asserts your position on the issue.
2. Counter argument which summarizes the counterclaims and p
rovides supporting information to
those claims, yet refutes the claim by poking holes into the coun
terclaim argument.
3. Your argument, which asserts the points to your claim, suppo
rts your claim with evidence and
gives your opinion.
4. Conclusion, which restates your thesis and major points.

Introduction
This week is intended primarily as a work week; finishing,
or for some of you starting on, your position paper which is
due in the next topic. The instructions are in the Course
Overview folder. Please make sure and follow those
instructions carefully.
In the past where students have fallen short on this
assignment are mostly in 2 areas:
1) Not presenting both sides of the argument.
Remember the idea is to convince me that you
know both sides of the argument and why you have
chosen the position you choose.
2) In-text citation.
It is not sufficient that you simply provide a bibliography or wo
rk cited page at the end.
Good luck doing the research!
Objectives
After completing the learning activities for this topic, you will
be able to:
Defend a position on one topic that presents challenges to the co
ntinent of Africa.
Demonstrate their knowledge of art and the economic realities o

Introduction
Even recognizing there are vast discrepancies as to the severity
of many
of the modern challenges facing the continent of Africa, the real
ity is
there are common threads that cut across regional boundaries, et
hnic
differences, and even socio-economic status. It seems resolving
those
challenges requires first gaining an understanding of the issues.
For
example, did colonization destroy Africa and therefore to blame
for what
is seen in the 21st century, or can descendants of indigenous Af
ricans be
trusted to control the plethora of mineral resources of the contin
ent, or is
the solution the pouring-in of foreign dollars? These are the kin
ds of
questions that must be answered in order to even begin any conv
ersation
about resolution.
Objectives
After completing the learning activities for this topic, you will
be able to:
Recognize many of the major challenges the Continent of Africa
faces in the 21st century.
Articulate opposing view points on various challenges facing Af
rica.
Synthesize the historical background of Africa with the challeng
es facing the continent in order to
better understand modern Africa.
