Anthropological Analysis of Cultural Diversity (Project)
The purpose of the final project is to invite you to deepen your understanding of
the anthropological analysis of cultural diversity. It invites you to take an
anthropological stance, to consider cultural contexts and practices, and the
various meanings assigned to these, from a perspective other than your own. One
important aspect of the anthropological understanding of cultural diversity is for
researchers to consider cultural contexts, practices, and meaning from the emic or
insider’s perspective. Furthermore, this assignment invites you to reflect upon
what you learned that might help you understand the cultural dynamics of
schools and schooling.
Recognizing that course members are in different academic programs, work sites,
and have different career aspirations, and in an effort to have this culminating project be the most meaningful for each, students
are required to design their own final project in consultation with the professor. Students are required to go out in the field, and do
some basic ethnography (utilize anthropological methods) in an education setting (broadly defined), but how they approach that
experience, what they focus on, and what they produce to turn in is generally open. The product will be linked/submitted both in
LiveText and on the course website.
Final Project Proposal
The proposal for the final project due date is on the course syllabus. It should be submitted as a private journal entry on
the course website. The proposal can be brief (150-200 words) but should relay the selected research site, focus, context,
methods and timeline of data collection, and product to be delivered. Also, students will discuss their project proposal
and their progress with the professor in a web appointment.

Final Project: Cultural Immersion
Cultural Competence is an essential aspect of counselor training. In order to begin to understand a culture, it is essential to have sustained interaction with the culture. For the final project for this course, each student will be responsible for actively investigating multicultural issues in the “real world,” by gradually immersing in a culture different from their own. The immersion project will involve experiential learning about other cultures. The intent is to increase your knowledge and sensitivity to other cultures.
In order to complete this project successfully, you will need to work on it throughout the entire course. As part of the project, each of you will select a culture different from your own and participate in at least three distinct cultural immersion experiences/observations within that culture. The idea is to gradually immerse into the different culture over the course of the term. You may use the list of suggestions below to guide your immersion process or you can devise some ideas of your own. It is essential that each experience is qualitatively different from that of your own culture and that the experiences gradually become more involved directly with the culture of choice.
1. The activities you select must include active involvement in the culture/activity. In other words, you may “observe” the culture but you may not limit the activity to passive observation. Make sure that each activity involves interaction with members of the culture, either through active participation in the activity itself or through conversations with members of the culture. Of course your third activity, the personal dialogue, already requires your active participation.
2. Submit a written narrative of your immersion activities. The paper will be 8-10 pages long (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font), This paper must include the following elements:
· Identification and Description of Population: This section must clearly identify the population you will be studying, how this population is different from you, and what your perceptions of this group are at this point in life. The description of differences should include both the obvious (visible differences, etc.) and the not so obvious (religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.). Please state all the differences you can identify. Your perceptions of this group should include information such as what you were told about this group as you were growing up, any beliefs/perceptions/assumptions you have about this group, what your sources of information about this group have been in the past, and why you have an interest in this group. THIS ASSIGNMENT IS NOT A CONVENTIONAL RESEARCH PAPER, where you write about a particular topic from a detached perspective. Instead, this assignment is more of an exercise of your imagination, albeit with guardrails. You are being asked — okay, required — to imagine yourself actually being directly and personally engaged in carrying out some type of project in a cultural or subcultural context that differs significantly from your own cultural context. (Obviously we don’t have sufficient time within the duration of this course for anyone to actually carry out a project of this dimension and complexity that entails direct contact with a specific culture other than the class member’s own.) This could be done solo or as part of a group. But for those of you envision it as a group project, you need to presume that you have some degree of responsibility for leading the group — particularly when it comes to applying Cultural Intelligence (CQ) to navigate the cross-cultural challenges that you would be facing in carrying out the project. Why you? Because you should assume that no one else in the group has taken Cultural Anthropology with professor at university or has had any other serious exposure to the concept of Cultural Intelligence prior to embarking on this project with you as a participant in the group.
So, what kind of project might you propose? It does not have to be any type of mission trip, although that is certainly a legitimate possibility. The most successful CIA projects in this Cultural Anthropology course over the years are those that somehow gave expression to a serious interest or concern on the part of the author, whether that interest or concern was of an academic nature, or personal, professional, cultural, charitable, scientific, vocational, avocational, artistic, athletic, medical -- or something else. In theory, your project might possibly be carried out in any culture or subculture in any part of the world. But it helps if you have identified a culture-specific need for your project to address. For example, one member of the 2020 class proposed to teach swimming to youth in Bangladesh, because he ran across a story about exceptionally high subteen drowning rates in that country. Someone else in the same section, drawing upon previous archival internships, proposed to work with members of the Navajo nation in making sure that their official archives adequately reflected that people’s perspectives and priorities, rather than just the U. S. Government’s priorities.
Obviously these last-cited projects reflect fairly specialized skill sets on the part of the authors; please don’t allow yourself to be intimidated by these examples. Course Project: Cultural Interview
The goal of the project is for the student to experience the value and
challenge of conducting ethnographic fieldwork. If you were doing your PhD
in cultural anthropology I would be sending you out to interview/observe
perhaps dozens of people over the course of perhaps a year or more!! We
will scale this down to a project you can accomplish with a single key
informant and a couple of hours of interview time.
Each student will find one willing key informant. This person can be a
family member, friend, casual acquaintance, or complete stranger. Just make
sure that they are a willing participant, and that they can set aside at
least a couple of hours to be interviewed. There are a few basic
requirements that I expect each student to accomplish in the project:
1. Construct a kinship diagram for your key informant, showing all of ego's
(your informant!) relatives. This includes relatives whose names are known
and unknown. From this kinship diagram, try to draw some conclusions about
the relative importance of kin ties for ego. Use the guidelines in your
textbook for help in making your diagram. Note that ego may have fictional
kin (people who are not "blood relatives" but are nonetheless considered
kin). It is up to you and your informant to decide if peoples' names are to
be included on the chart, but at a minimum identify each person on the chart
with the etic symbols as used in the text book (i.e. F, B, S, Z, FB, MB,
FZD, FFB, etc.)
2. Identify the culture, sub-cultures, ethnic groups, or other social groups
to which the informant belongs. Try to evaluate how strongly your informant
is connected to each group.
3.Explicitly identify the methods that you are using in the project. This
should include your goal, how you met and interviewed your informant, how
you took notes or otherwise recorded information, your overall perspective
(emic or etic). Note any problems or areas of improvement for future work.
How might your own biases or perspectives have affected your questions
and/or interpretations?
4.Your project should be described in a 6 page report, typed, double-spaced
(12 pt Times New Roman font), and with standard 1 inch margins. Feel free

After reading the introductory material on the home page, delve more deeply into three different typologies—or ways of classifying cultures. The module starts with a simple dichotomous typology—individualism/collectivism—expands to Hofstede’s six dimensions of culture, and rounds out with a more impressionistic framework—that of Gannon’s cultural metaphors.
Individualism/Collectivism
Perhaps the oldest construct in thinking about dimensions of culture is the dichotomy of individualism and collectivism. It is a good place to start in understanding cultural dimensions, because it represents one of the more readily apparent characteristics of a culture—the degree to which members of a society think of themselves as individuals separate and distinct from their fellows or as a part of a group that is greater and more significant than the self.
Social scientists have studied the distinction between societies that value obligations to the group over the individual (or vice versa) for nearly 100 years. Beginning with the work of Emile Durkeim, the construct of individualism/collectivism was popularized in modern cross-cultural study largely by the work of Harry Triandis and colleagues.
What follows is an extensive review of the topic that will give you a thorough understanding of the characteristics of individualistic and collectivistic cultures and help you understand how leadership styles and practices vary between the two. In addition, the article discusses how these two orientations can disparately affect economic development, organizational culture, group dynamics, job design and rewards, conflict, and communication. Later parts of the article cover research and methodological concerns—this section is optional.

Hofstede’s Dimensions of Culture
Currently, the most widely used framework for classifying types of cultures is Geert Hofstede’s dimensions of culture. Hofstede, a Dutch social psychologist, once worked with IBM International, where he became interested in cross-cultural influences on work behavior. In 1980, Hofstede published his groundbreaking work, Culture’s Consequences. In this work, Hofstede proposed four cultural dimensions, each forming a bipolar continuum. The release of information to the public – including through social media – can impact everything from a company’s image before the public to an individual’s image before a company. Jackson et al. (2020) note that while “strategic HR use of social media can build the employer’s reputation in the labor market and help HR professionals to reach candidates and current employees,” the use of social media can also “lead to the disclosure of trade secrets” or present a negative image of the company (p. 21). While companies place substantial hours and dollars into cultivating a favorable brand image before the public, a careless comment or complaint by an employee or contractor on social media can go viral and counteract such marketing efforts. In such cases, companies may find themselves forced to address such comments or complaints before the public in an attempt to save the brand image they have worked so hard to build.
In addition to impacting the image of a company, careless social media posts can also impact potential and current employees before the company. According to Melton and Miller (2015), while “most students appear to know that the content they post” on social media could be viewed negatively by “potential employers,” many students continue to do so (p. 678). Through social media, what would have been a careless comment if spoken aloud becomes a permanent statement viewable by countless individuals. Furthermore, comments and images referencing illegal activities or poor decision-making and communicating abilities become enshrined for potential and current employers to reference and base hiring and firing decisions upon.
It is worth noting that careless comments via social media can go beyond “negative,” and can sometimes involve trade secrets (as noted). While negative comments can cast a shadow over a company’s brand, comments revealing trade secrets can jeopardize long-term strategies, losing hard-won competitive edges. As referenced above, Melton and Miller (2015) assert that even though individuals know of such risks, many continue to post comments that can be understood to be “careless.”

Cultural Competence is an essential aspect of counselor training. In order to begin to understand a culture, it is essential to have sustained interaction with the culture. For the final project for this course, each student will be responsible for actively investigating multicultural issues in the “real world,” by gradually immersing in a culture different from their own. The immersion project will involve experiential learning about other cultures. The intent is to increase your knowledge and sensitivity to other cultures.

1. The activities you select must include active involvement in the culture/activity. In other words, you may “observe” the culture but you may not limit the activity to passive observation. Make sure that each activity involves interaction with members of the culture, either through active participation in the activity itself or through conversations with members of the culture. Of course your third activity, the personal dialogue, already requires your active participation.
2. Submit a written narrative of your immersion activities. The paper will be 8-10 pages long (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font), This paper must include the following elements:
· Identification and Description of Population: This section must clearly identify the population you will be studying, how this population is different from you, and what your perceptions of this group are at this point in life. The description of differences should include both the obvious (visible differences, etc.) and the not so obvious (religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.). Instead, this assignment is more of an exercise of your imagination, albeit with guardrails. You are being asked — okay, required — to imagine yourself actually being directly and personally engaged in carrying out some type of project in a cultural or subcultural context that differs significantly from your own cultural context. (Obviously we don’t have sufficient time within the duration of this course for anyone to actually carry out a project of this dimension and complexity that entails direct contact with a specific culture other than the class member’s own.) In theory, your project might possibly be carried out in any culture or subculture in any part of the world. But it helps if you have identified a culture-specific need for your project to address. For example, one member of the 2020 class proposed to teach swimming to youth in Bangladesh, because he ran across a story about exceptionally high subteen drowning rates in that country. Someone else in the same section, drawing upon previous archival internships, proposed to work with members of the Navajo nation in making sure that their official archives adequately reflected that people’s perspectives and priorities, rather than just the U. S. Government’s priorities.

The goal of the project is for the student to experience the value and
challenge of conducting ethnographic fieldwork. If you were doing your PhD
in cultural anthropology I would be sending you out to interview/observe
perhaps dozens of people over the course of perhaps a year or more!! We
will scale this down to a project you can accomplish with a single key
informant and a couple of hours of interview time.
Each student will find one willing key informant. This person can be a
family member, friend, casual acquaintance, or complete stranger. Just make
sure that they are a willing participant, and that they can set aside at
least a couple of hours to be interviewed. There are a few basic
requirements that I expect each student to accomplish in the project:
1. Construct a kinship diagram for your key informant, showing all of ego's
(your informant!) relatives. This includes relatives whose names are known
and unknown. From this kinship diagram, try to draw some conclusions about
the relative importance of kin ties for ego. Use the guidelines in your
textbook for help in making your diagram. Note that ego may have fictional
kin (people who are not "blood relatives" but are nonetheless considered
kin). It is up to you and your informant to decide if peoples' names are to
be included on the chart, but at a minimum identify each person on the chart
with the etic symbols as used in the text book (i.e. F, B, S, Z, FB, MB,
FZD, FFB, etc.)
2. Identify the culture, sub-cultures, ethnic groups, or other social groups
to which the informant belongs. Try to evaluate how strongly your informant
is connected to each group.
3.Explicitly identify the methods that you are using in the project. This
should include your goal, how you met and interviewed your informant, how
you took notes or otherwise recorded information, your overall perspective
(emic or etic). Note any problems or areas of improvement for future work.
How might your own biases or perspectives have affected your questions
and/or interpretations?
4.Your project should be described in a 6 page report, typed, double-spaced

The module starts with a simple dichotomous typology—individualism/collectivism—expands to Hofstede’s six dimensions of culture, and rounds out with a more impressionistic framework—that of Gannon’s cultural metaphors.
Individualism/Collectivism
Perhaps the oldest construct in thinking about dimensions of culture is the dichotomy of individualism and collectivism. It is a good place to start in understanding cultural dimensions, because it represents one of the more readily apparent characteristics of a culture—the degree to which members of a society think of themselves as individuals separate and distinct from their fellows or as a part of a group that is greater and more significant than the self.
Social scientists have studied the distinction between societies that value obligations to the group over the individual (or vice versa) for nearly 100 years. Beginning with the work of Emile Durkeim, the construct of individualism/collectivism was popularized in modern cross-cultural study largely by the work of Harry Triandis and colleagues.
What follows is an extensive review of the topic that will give you a thorough understanding of the characteristics of individualistic and collectivistic cultures and help you understand how leadership styles and practices vary between the two. In addition, the article discusses how these two orientations can disparately affect economic development, organizational culture, group dynamics, job design and rewards, conflict, and communication. Later parts of the article cover research and methodological concerns—this section is optional.

Many people are skeptical that climate change is even occurring on our beautiful planet. Some places worldwide feel its effects through increased temperatures, which is desirable to some. The loss of beach shores has resulted in a drastic decrease in marine life and land species who rely on coastal areas to survive. According to an article posted by author Sarah Taylor, to the site

titled “Fiji prepares for ‘Climate Refugees’,” since the 19th century, sea levels have risen by around 25 centimeters worldwide (www#2). This rise in sea levels is attributed to the seemingly neverending rise of greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere. Another Youtube video, “Climate Change and Fiji,” posted by the user

emphasizes that Fiji is only one of many other Pacific Islands to be battling climate change (www#3). However, Fijians have taken the lead as the spokespeople for all Pacific Islanders to feel protected and not neglected.
These negative biological implications seem to occur in other places around the world, right? Wrong. Our very own city, San Diego, has been facing and will continue to tackle the negative effects of climate change. A typed interview conducted by the Environmental Health Coalition with Kayla Race exemplifies the many ways climate change appears in our communities, including prolonged heat waves, more intense wildfires, increased water costs, and disruptions on electricity (www#4). My family and I have personally been affected by the increased water (and energy) costs and the interruptions on our electricity. We don’t use our AC system and rely on fans for a cool down from our heatwave, yet are charged more than during the year and face blackouts quite often. A video posted in 2017 by the San Diego Union-Tribune, explains the differences between catastrophic and existential climate change (www#5). Catastrophic damage is survivable by humans, while existential climate change threatens the immediate safety of humans. Many still do not believe that these repercussions are created by car emissions into the air, affecting our atmospher.

Contemporary ethnographic research includes many other types of research scenarios, such as urban ethnography, neighborhood studies, and even microstudies of groups as small as families and individuals. Ethnography is any systematic study of people and cultures, usually conducted through observation, interviews, dialogues, participation, and historical research. Ethnography is used across disciplines as varied as anthropology, linguistics, sociology, advertising, and of course, human services and social work. Your Immersion Project is just that—a study of a population group with the goal of better understanding the culture of the group. As you complete this project over the course of the semester, keep in mind one of the classical hallmarks of ethnographic research, pioneered by Boas: The beliefs and activities of humans have to be interpreted within their own cultural terms and not evaluated or judged through the cultural lens or terms of the observer or researcher. That is, human beliefs and behavior are culturally relative. This week, you submit your Immersion Project Paper, one of two culminating parts of your Final Project for this course (along with your narrated PowerPoint, which is due in Week 10). This 7- to 10-page paper will be a culmination of what you have
- 2. experienced and explored throughout your work on this project. Since everyone’s experience will be different, the content of the paper will vary for each student; however, there are two sections that everyone should include: Reflection on your Immersion Project: Observation: What observational activity did you attend and what insight did it give you into your selected population? Dialogue: How did you carry out your dialogue? Reflect on your experience and what insight it gave you into your selected population. Reaction and Critical Analysis of your experience: This section should incorporate your reflections on your experiences, what you learned about the group, what you learned about yourself, and how your perceptions of this group have changed over time. Several areas to address in this section: Description of the group Values/belief orientation Social interactions (relationships within and between group members) Religious/spiritual beliefs Roles and expectations
