The importance of new product development in building both technological and technical capacity of university and firm cannot be overemphasized. Collaborations between HE and industry in NPD is conceived as mutual interaction for skills acquisition and economic improvement. The study was designed to determine the extent of new product development partnership between HEIs and the manufacturing firms. A survey was conducted, and a sample of 400 was drawn from both HE and industry; the data were then analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) software of EQS version 6.2.The results revealed that there is weak interaction between HE and industry, also there is no formal partnership between the two on new product development. in order to strengthen the mutual relationship, a conceptual model had been developed after a careful examination and assessment of the key factors of NPD and after preliminary CFA analysis conducted to establish the determinants of the main construct. A nine-factor model was then developed for university and industry. The study therefore recommends that higher education and industry adopt this new model for effective partnership on NPD.

Faculty members involved with the "Heritage Under Threat" project, a collaboration between the IDS-led Coalition for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID) and the Universities of Mosul and Iraq are presented with awards by Prof Melissa Leach (IDS), Professor Dr Kossay Al-Ahmady (UoM) and Dr Lukman Hasan (UoD).
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is geared towards improving governance in the oil, gas and minerals sector. The EITI currently includes 53 countries across the world, half of which are in Africa. It is governed by multi-stakeholder coalitions representing business, governments and civil society organisations.
The EITI started out in 2007 by disclosing payments made by companies to governments in the form of license fees, taxes and other payments. Governments in turn disclosed payments they received from companies to identify possible discrepancies in reported revenues. Disclosures under the EITI are now increasingly fine-grained, focusing on identifying beneficial owners, publicising contracts, commodity trading transparency and project level investments. The EITI seeks to tackle corruption, promote accountability, strengthen institutions, and contribute to domestic resource mobilisation. The current approach also highlights gender and environmental considerations in government and company reporting.
Many EITI countries are currently facing a triple crisis occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic: a health emergency, a massive fall in government revenues triggered by oil and commodity price falls, and an economic crisis caused by a huge reduction in global demand. This lecture explores the continued salience of governance and transparency work in the extractives sector during a period of acute global crisis, amid growing constraints on government budgets and capacity, and increasing limitations on civic space and advocacy.
This Sussex Development Lecture addresses this set of issues to place the EITI in a broader perspective as a leading global transparency and accountability initiative.

The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

• SD: an appropriate approach to cope with complexity
• A “meta language” - alternative to linear causal chains
• “Qualitative modeling” through “Group Model Workshops”:
– Consensus building on parameters & dynamics of complex settings
– Making implicit assumptions explicit
– Feeding “lessons learned” from evaluation into model structure
• Computer simulation (“quantitative modeling”)
– Not a must - “qualitative modeling” is useful exercise in itself
– Requires experienced programmer
– Rather time consuming
• Useful for generic types of interventions (project families)
• Towards an “Artificial Intelligence” tool for program design?
