Why Do Projects Fail?
Project failure rates are certainly cause for concern, but consider that more
and more organizations are adopting a project-based model of organization,
called PBO, and it is not surprising to find that addressing failures and learning
from them has become increasingly important (Eden, Ackermann, & Williams,
2005; Gray & Larson, 2006; Hyvari, 2006; Robertson & Williams, 2006; Thiry &
Deguire, 2007).
Failures occur despite the fact that we have significantly improved the
process of planning, executing, and controlling projects. Two contributions
would include the Project Management Institute’s (PMI’s) A Guide to the
Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) (2004) and the
literature on critical success factors (CSFs) (Cooke-Davies, 2002; Fortune &
White, 2006; Hyvari, 2006; Pinto & Slevin, 1987; Sutterfield, Friday-Stroud,
& Shivers-Blackwell, 2006).
To help us understand how projects fail, it may be useful to classify the
approaches represented by the PMBOK® Guide, Capability Maturity Model
Integration (CMMI), Earned Value Management (EVM), Critical Chain
Project Management (CCPM), and CSFs as the Rational Expectation view
of project management. They assume that project leaders follow a rational
and consistent approach to project management and strive to achieve spe-
cific organizational goals (Bazerman, 1994; Beach & Connolly, 2005). It is a
view that emphasizes what “should” be done. Argyris (1999) referred to this
as the “espoused” theory of individuals and organizations.
There is, however, another view, and it focuses on the way in which indi-
viduals within an organization actually behave and make decisions.
Borrowing from the work of Simon (1955) and Tversky and Kahneman (1974,
1981), it can be classified as the “behavioral” view of project management. It
emphasizes what individuals and groups “actually” do and how managers
make decisions involving values and risk preferences (Bazerman, 1994).
Argyris (1999) called this the “theory-in-practice.”
This article focuses on the behavioral view of project management and
how an understanding of systematic biases—those common to the human
decision-making process—can prove useful in diagnosing project failure. By
studying these systematic biases, we can learn how decision makers respond
to ambiguity, complexity, and uncertainty, as well as how their own particu-
lar psychological processes influence project decision making (Schwenk,
1984). From this behavioral view we can learn more about why management
approves an overly ambitious scope, why communications between teams is
limited, why a manager might ignore signs that the project is going badly, or
why a manager discourages the participation of a wider constituency in the
project management process.

Avoid repetition and redundancy
of both ideas and words. This is the issue that I usually subtract the most points for, so take care.
For example, when you edit your papers, make sure that you don’t say “Cool Herc is widely accepted as the originator of hip hop”, and then two sentences later, “As Cool Herc is the originator of hip hop…”. See how these two are the same idea? If the reader already has the information, repeating it just takes up space. Another thing to avoid is using the same word multiple times in quick succession. For example: “I found it exciting to listen to the this music. Eri B. has an exciting tone to his voice. When I hear how he flows when he strings words together, I feel excited.” See how ‘excitement’ occurs three times in three sentences? Here’s another more subtle example: “He used the turntable as a way to switch songs seamlessly, using the scratch method to cover up the different beats that were used in each song.” In this example, the word ‘use’ occurs three times in the same sentence! Because it’s a less emotional word, it might be harder to catch, but it’s just as problematic.
I like to see ‘I’ statements.
I find that turning the focus on yourself (especially when we are dealing with sensitive issues and incorporating personal experience, as I encourage) is a great way to avoid generalizing groups and ideas. If your statement is clearly from your perspective, then I as a reader can empathize with your position. If you use lots of ‘we as a generalized group of people act and feel this specific way’, it makes me wonder what research you’ve done, what data points you have, and how many people you have interviewed in order to have that knowledge.
Going off of the previous expectation:
BE SPECIFIC!
If you do make a generalized statement about a situation, back it up with details. Show the research. Reference or quote the authors who initially made the observations and put their work into context. If you tell me that Cool Herc is largely agreed to be the originator of hip hop, tell me why and give examples.
For example, something with detail and context would be: “Although Jamaican soundsystem culture is at the roots of hip hop, Cool Herc was the first to create tracks sourced from James Brown, using the funkier, harder beats that we’ve come to associate with hip hop today.” See how this gives specific details and context on either end of the statement that Cool Herc was the first person to make hip hop?

programming dominates all others—namely, threads,
sequential processes that share memory. They represent
a key concurrency model supported by modern com-
puters, programming languages, and operating systems.
Many general-purpose parallel architectures in use
today—such as symmetric multiprocessors—are direct
hardware realizations of the thread abstraction.
Some applications can use threads very effectively—
for example, so-called embarrassingly parallel applica-
tions that essentially spawn multiple independent
processes such as build tools (PVM gmake) or Web
servers. Given these applications’ independence, pro-
gramming is relatively easy and the abstraction being
used is more like processes than threads. Where such
applications do share data, they do so through database
abstractions, which manage concurrency through such
mechanisms as transactions. However, client-side appli-
cations are not so simple.
Threads are not the only possibility for concurrent
programming. In scientific computing, where perfor-
mance requirements have long demanded concurrent
programming, data-parallel language extensions and
message-passing libraries—such as PVM, MPI, and
OpenMP—dominate over threads for concurrent pro-
gramming. Computer architectures intended for scien-
tific computing often differ significantly from so-called
general-purpose architectures. They commonly support
vectors and streams in hardware, for example. However,
even in this domain, concurrent programs remain
tedious to write. C and Fortran dominate, despite a long
history of much better data-parallel languages.
For concurrent programming to become mainstream, we must discard threads as a
programming model. Nondeterminism should be judiciously and carefully introduced
where needed, and it should be explicit in programs.

Susan Faludi describes the Citadel as a “living museum”, whose main attempt is to preserve the same ideals and traditions as when the school was first founded and shape the boys that attend the school into men.

Are their true identities suppressed at any given time and how? What does the word sanctuary mean for both the Citadel and the women in Iran? The Citadel and Nafisi’s living room seem to offer different ideas of the word sanctuary. How does Faludi understand the way the Citadel presents itself as a ‘sanctuary’ from a libertine and effeminized world? Similarly, how do the weekly meetings in the author’s living room serve as a sanctuary for the women in the literature group and why do they find the need to expose their true selves and all their colors in this sacred space? Could the Citadel be considered functioning as a totalitarian regime? If so, how are the Citadel’s “laws” similar to the laws of the Islamic Republic after the revolution regarding their behavior towards women?
You can also consider more broadly how space- open space, isolated space, can be a tool of both oppression as well as resistance.

Papa Geo’s Restaurant needs to be competitive and unveil marketing crusades to protect their returns in the business. However, it is guided by typical objectives in the marketing plan. The first objective of the restaurant is ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty. The target market entails about 10,000 families which is a totality of lower to middle class clients with zero direct competition. However, the customers’ satisfaction is determined the customer’s loyalty to the restaurant especially due to the services that they receive. The restaurant wins the customers through the good Italian food of low price. Stunning cleanliness of the restaurant is welcoming and eye catching which applies to both the foods served and the environment. Looking back at the history of the United States helps open our eyes to the positive and negative impacts of decisions made by our elected officials. No matter who is President, we can find many accomplishments and failures a like. President Lyndon Johnson is no different. He had many successes and failures. One of his most notable accomplishments is creating the Great Society. This was his plight to attack poverty, race, and immigration. He decided after a report produced by the Council of Economic Advisers in 1964 that he would work to eliminate poverty. The report "estimated that 22 percent of the nation's population lived in poverty, lacking adequate food, shelter, and clothing" (Schultz, 2013, p 494). He persuaded Congress to pass the Economic Opportunity Act, which was designed to include many programs to eliminate poverty. Many of these programs delt with education and jobs. He also worked to create Medicare and Medicaid to provide medical insurance for the elderly and poor (Schultz, 2013). When it came to civil rights of Americans, he signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which "outlawed discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion or sex" (Evaluating the success of the Great Society, n.d. para 7). It also allowed lawsuits against segregated schools. These programs all were seen as a positive to LBJs presidency. One last positive to look at was his work on immigration. He got rid of the national origins formula from the 1920s and opened the United States up to all immigrants (Evaluating the success of the Great Society, n.d.). These were all considered positive accomplishments of his presidency. Many see his biggest failure as the Vietnam War. His fear of the domino theory that was the thought that if one country fell to communism the surrounding ones will also fall to communism (Schultz, 2013). He felt the way to help Vietnam was to send more troops but could not get Congress to declare war on Vietnam. Instead, it turned into a police action. His involvement in Vietnam was the downfall of his presidency. As the war continued, America was rocked with protests and he lost popularity with his own political party (History.com Editors, 2009). This was his political demise. Still to this day people question why we were there.
After my research, I would say that over all President Johnson did a lot of great things for the United States. we cannot judge a president off of a few mistakes. We need to keep an open mind and look at the Presidency as a whole. My opinion is that Johnson made great strides in America. His Presidency had great impacts on the citizens of this country. Problem Statement
Congratulations! Y ou are leaving Earth forever. You are selected to be part of a mining colony of 100 people located on
the planet Mars. Before you head to Mars, however, you need to fi gure out how to feed yourself and your colleagues
once you are there. Your group is tasked with selecting the foods to be grown on Mars.
Suppose that enough food can be taken to supply the entire colony for several months (approximately 90 days). After
this, food for the colony must come from what can be grown. Th e colony manager is instructed to keep costs as low as
possible while still providing a sustainable food supply that meets the nutrient requirements for adult humans. You may
assume that all of the colonists are healthy adults of average height and weight with no known food allergies.
By the time you arrive on Mars, a dome-like structure will already be in place to maintain an Earth-like air composition,
pressure, and temperature. Within this dome there are 1000 acres available for growing foodstuff s. You can bring seeds,
soil, and fertilizer with you, but keep in mind that seeds require time to germinate and grow to maturity, and diff erent
plants have diff erent growth requirements. Additionally, certain foodstuff s require more fertilizer than others, which is
additional weight you must bring with you, increasing the cost of the trip.
Some Mars facts: Mars has a 687d orbital period and a 24h 40m day-night cycle, and sunlight is about 44% as intense
as at Earth. Mars has plenty of carbon dioxide and water for your use, but you will still need to collect it and recycle
all that you use. Th e soil and air are extremely poor in carbon and nitrogen compounds, hence the need for fertilizers
and other organics. Outside of your dome, the air pressure will be at most about 1% that at Earth’s surface. Th e outside
day-night temperature will vary by 60 to 80°C, with a daytime maximum above the freezing point of water during the
summer. Martian-analog soils on Earth would include those of the ash-infused Columbia plateau in North America,
and the Dry Valleys of Antarctica.

Bisphenol A in Your Soup Cans
Bisphenol A (BPA) is in the lining of most canned goods, and recent studies have shown a positive association between BPA exposure and behavior and health problems. How much does canned soup consumption increase urinary BPA concentration? That was the question addressed in a recent study1 in which consumption of canned soup over five days was associated with a more than 1000% increase in urinary BPA. In the study, 75 participants ate either canned soup or fresh soup for lunch for five days. On the fifth day, urinary BPA levels were measured. After a two-day break, the participants switched groups and repeated the process. The difference in BPA levels between the two treatments was measured for each participant. The study reports that a 95% confidence interval for the difference in means (canned minus fresh) is 19.6 to 25.5 μg/L.

a key concurrency model supported by modern com-
puters, programming languages, and operating systems.
Many general-purpose parallel architectures in use
today—such as symmetric multiprocessors—are direct
hardware realizations of the thread abstraction.
Some applications can use threads very effectively—
for example, so-called embarrassingly parallel applica-
tions that essentially spawn multiple independent
processes such as build tools (PVM gmake) or Web
servers. Given these applications’ independence, pro-
gramming is relatively easy and the abstraction being
used is more like processes than threads. Where such
applications do share data, they do so through database
abstractions, which manage concurrency through such
mechanisms as transactions. However, client-side appli-
cations are not so simple.
Threads are not the only possibility for concurrent
programming. In scientific computing, where perfor-
mance requirements have long demanded concurrent
programming, data-parallel language extensions and
message-passing libraries—such as PVM, MPI, and
OpenMP—dominate over threads for concurrent pro-
gramming. Computer architectures intended for scien-
tific computing often differ significantly from so-called
general-purpose architectures. They commonly support
vectors and streams in hardware, for example. However,
even in this domain, concurrent programs remain
tedious to write. C and Fortran dominate, despite a long
history of much better data-parallel languages.
For concurrent programming to become mainstream, we must discard threads as a
programming model. Nondeterminism should be judiciously and carefully introduced
where needed, and it should be explicit in programs.

Looking back at the history of the United States helps open our eyes to the positive and negative impacts of decisions made by our elected officials. No matter who is President, we can find many accomplishments and failures a like. President Lyndon Johnson is no different. He had many successes and failures. One of his most notable accomplishments is creating the Great Society. This was his plight to attack poverty, race, and immigration. He decided after a report produced by the Council of Economic Advisers in 1964 that he would work to eliminate poverty. The report "estimated that 22 percent of the nation's population lived in poverty, lacking adequate food, shelter, and clothing" (Schultz, 2013, p 494). He persuaded Congress to pass the Economic Opportunity Act, which was designed to include many programs to eliminate poverty. Many of these programs delt with education and jobs. He also worked to create Medicare and Medicaid to provide medical insurance for the elderly and poor (Schultz, 2013). When it came to civil rights of Americans, he signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which "outlawed discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion or sex" (Evaluating the success of the Great Society, n.d. para 7). It also allowed lawsuits against segregated schools. These programs all were seen as a positive to LBJs presidency. One last positive to look at was his work on immigration. He got rid of the national origins formula from the 1920s and opened the United States up to all immigrants (Evaluating the success of the Great Society, n.d.). These were all considered positive accomplishments of his presidency. Many see his biggest failure as the Vietnam War. His fear of the domino theory that was the thought that if one country fell to communism the surrounding ones will also fall to communism (Schultz, 2013). He felt the way to help Vietnam was to send more troops but could not get Congress to declare war on Vietnam. Instead, it turned into a police action. His involvement in Vietnam was the downfall of his presidency. As the war continued, America was rocked with protests and he lost popularity with his own political party (History.com Editors, 2009). This was his political demise. Still to this day people question why we were there.
After my research, I would say that over all President Johnson did a lot of great things for the United States. we cannot judge a president off of a few mistakes. We need to keep an open mind and look at the Presidency as a whole. My opinion is that Johnson made great strides in America. His Presidency had great impacts on the citizens of this country. While I felt his decision on Vietnam was wrong, his idea of the Great Society had a positive impact on our country.

Suppose that enough food can be taken to supply the entire colony for several months (approximately 90 days). After
this, food for the colony must come from what can be grown. Th e colony manager is instructed to keep costs as low as
possible while still providing a sustainable food supply that meets the nutrient requirements for adult humans. You may
assume that all of the colonists are healthy adults of average height and weight with no known food allergies.
By the time you arrive on Mars, a dome-like structure will already be in place to maintain an Earth-like air composition,
pressure, and temperature. Within this dome there are 1000 acres available for growing foodstuff s. You can bring seeds,
soil, and fertilizer with you, but keep in mind that seeds require time to germinate and grow to maturity, and diff erent

reliability of using the assessment with your client, and any limitations the assessment
would have if used with diverse and special populations.
Include information on how to use electronic resources such as O*NET and CAGS as
well as the Dictionary of Occupational Titles to describe the mental, physical, and
vocational preparation for work.
The body of the paper should be a minimum of 10 pages and should include additional
resources and references other than the text book. You may use yourself as the
hypothetical client.

the numbers of these jobs in the national economy, and how this will affect your client in
the geographical area in which they live.
If additional skills are needed for the jobs you cite in the previous section, how will the
client acquire those skills
Summary and conclusion.

Bisphenol A in Your Soup Cans
Bisphenol A (BPA) is in the lining of most canned goods, and recent studies have shown a positive association between BPA exposure and behavior and health problems. How much does canned soup consumption increase urinary BPA concentration? That was the question addressed in a recent study1 in which consumption of canned soup over five days was associated with a more than 1000% increase in urinary BPA. In the study, 75 participants ate either canned soup or fresh soup for lunch for five days. On the fifth day, urinary BPA levels were measured. After a two-day break, the participants switched groups and repeated the process. The difference in BPA levels between the two treatments was measured for each participant. The study reports that a 95% confidence interval for the difference in means (canned minus fresh) is 19.6 to 25.5 μg/L.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
