3. HISTORY OF PAPER BATTERY
“Dr. Robert Linhardt, John H.Broadbent, Pulickel M. Ajayan,
Omkaram Nalamasu “ with a joint appointment in material science
In August 2007 ,a
research team at
RENSSELEAR
POLYTECHNIC
INSTITUTE led by ,
Engineering
developed the PAPER
BATTERY , also
known as NANO
Composite Paper.
In December 2009,YI CUI
and his team at STANFORD
UNIVERSITY successfully
made an actual prototype
that gave a terminal voltage
of 1.5V
4. DEFINITION :
A paper battery is a flexible ,ultra thin energy
storage and production device formed by
combining CNT`s with a conventional sheet of
cellulose-based paper.
A paper battery acts as both a high-energy
battery and supercapacitor ,combining
two components that are separate in traditional
electronics.

TUBES(CNT)

6. CONSTRUCTION OF
PAPER BATTERY
• CNT thin films were coated into stainless steel (ss)
substrates with a solution based process.
• A dried film with a thickness of a 2 microscope was
formed after drying the CNT ink on the SS substrate at
80 degree for 5 min .
• This film is then peeled off from substrate.
7. CONSTRUCTION OF
PAPER BATTERY
• These films act as electrodes of paper battery.
• one film is pasted to electrolyte LTO
(Li4Ti5O12) and the other film is pasted to
electrolyte LCO (LiCoO2).
• Paper is sandwiched between two electrolyte
LTO and LCO with PVDF( poly vinylidene
fluoride) acting as glue.
8. WORKING OF PAPER
BATTERIES
• CATHODE : Carbon nano tube (CNT)
• ANODE : Lithium
• Electrolyte : Bio electrolyte- blood,
sweat , urine ,etc.,
• Separator : paper
9. APPLICATION
Low battery power devices like in calculators.
Wrist watch
Other low drain devices.
Laptop batteries
Mobile phones
Handheld digital cameras
Wireless communication devices like mouse, keyboard ,
Bluetooth , headphones etc.,
11. LIMITATION &
DISADVANTAGE
It would not be logical only to ponder over the
miraculous properties and applications of paper batteries
.
Things need to be discussed at the flip side as well.
Have Low Shear strength : They can be torn easily .
It will be produced as an nano-tubes are very
expensive and very efficient .
Arc discharge, Chemical Vapor Deposition, Laser
Ablation , Electrolysis.
12. Why to Use Paper Battery ?
• Ultra -thin size & flexible structure.
•Exhibits property of super-capacitor (22F-36F per
gram)
•Operating temperature (-75 to 100 degree
celcius)
•Provide both long-term , steady power
production and bursts of energy.
•Cost-effective.
• Reduce in cost.
13. FUTURE SCOPE
It can be further
developed for cursive
writings and traditional
languages.
fabrications and reducing
the size.
Cost Reduction.
