This document provides information about two half-day post-conference workshops on November 12, 2015 following the Advances in Cell Based Assays conference on November 10-11, 2015. Workshop A will focus on the latest generation microscopes for live cell imaging in high-throughput, high-content, and high-content analytical assays, featuring an interactive session with Nikon, UK. Workshop B will explore applying tissue engineering to develop 3D cell-based assays, focusing on generating in vitro disease models, led by Associate Professor Felicity Rose. Both workshops aim to discuss cutting-edge technologies and their applications to advance cell and tissue-based screening assays.

extracellular matrix modulators
• Excessive scarring is characterised by the accumulation
of extracellular matrix proteins, which can lead to loss of
tissue function and ultimately organ failure.
• Characteristically, cultured fibroblasts produce
collagen but do not assemble this into extracellular
fibrils. Chen et al disclosed a potentially useful method
to induce fibrillar collagen production by fibroblasts.
• We have developed this technique into a high content,

Overview of the workshop:
The workshop will focus upon cutting edge science and
technology in cell and tissue based assays utilizing high-
throughput screening (HTS), high-content screening (HCS)
methods and high-content analytical (HCA) tools. Experts
from King’s College and University College, London, UK will
participate to discuss and present latest findings and
thoughts.
Nikon, UK will give an interactive presentation on combining
the future of screening with high-resolution microscopy and
application of imaging techniques to screens. This will include
how the latest generation of microscopes can be employed
in HTS/HCS/HCA applications for live cell imaging, such as:

The presentation will show how these could be done for single
or long-term screens (or both) with flexibility of setting up
separate experiments within each well.

About the workshop leader Dr Aamir Ahmed:
Aamir obtained his Ph D from the University of
Dundee where he also served as an Honorary
Lecturer and Group Leader. He then joined Yale
University as research faculty to work on ion
channels. Aamir was awarded a Wellcome Trust
Fellowship at the Department of Physiology,
University College London, where he established his research
group. This was followed by his appointment as the Head of
Stem Cell Group at the Prostate Cancer Research Centre,
also at the University College London. He joined the Centre
for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, King’s College,
London in January 2015.

This workshop will explore the application of tissue
engineering to the generation of 3D in vitro models for
disease modeling, toxicology testing and drug
screening. The session will be kicked-off with a
presentation of work that has aimed to develop a 3D
model of the human bronchial mucosa and will
include case studies from industry where drug
molecules have failed in clinical trials despite having
passed in vitro testing.

If you have an interest in developing 3D in vitro tissue
models or would like to know more about how tissue
engineering can be applied to in vitro testing, then
this workshop is for you. We are particularly keen to

About the workshop leader:
Dr Felicity Rose is an Associate Professor in
Tissue Engineering at the University of
Nottingham and previously held a
University of Nottingham sponsored Ann
McLaren Research Fellowship. She now
leads activities at Nottingham on animal
replacement, mucosal tissue regeneration, and has
a long term interest in modelling of 3D tissue growth.
About the organisation:
