The world of human memory is a fascinating,
enigmatic and complex subject. From the
methods needed to transform short-term
information into long-term memories, to what
foods can help to boost memory performance,
there’s no shortage of viable information out
there for the curious.
However, when it comes to overcoming
forgetfulness, there’s seems to be a gap in the
information that neurological experts have
presented to us. Why is it so easy to forget
short-term information? Why are some
memories preserved while others are not?
And why does the brain forget information
that we try so hard to hold on to?

forgetfulness or you’re renowned for your

What Causes Forgetfulness?
While there isn’t one primary cause of
memory loss, there are plenty of reasons why
you’re not as able to hold on to information as

This sensation of forgetfulness occurs at both
the onset and in the aftermath of a

marijuana users often report difficulty
recalling information and memories, which is
a direct result of hallucinogenic properties
contained within this drug.
Additionally, an excess of alcohol can cause
permanent damage to brain cells, resulting in
the user’s inability to remember significant
dates, events and facts.
Physical disease can often be the source of a
particularly severe case of forgetfulness.
Alzheimer’s is often the first conclusion that
older individuals tend to jump to when they
can’t recall certain memories; however, there
are often other symptoms that should be
looked at as well.
For example, hypothyroidism has often been
attributed to lapses in remembering, as the
hormones produced by the thyroid gland are
vital in keeping the brain active, alert and
healthy.
On a similar note, menopause can often
wreak havoc with our memory skills, as the
sudden fluctuation in hormones have been
observed to influence the brain’s ability to
retain and recall information.
Finally, major head injuries or traumas can
often cause lapses in the human memory.
However, while this may be a favorite storyline
for movies and television shows, forgetfulness
that’s been caused by such occurrences is
much less common than the other causes
we’ve just explored.

Forgetfulness
So now that you know what causes
forgetfulness, how can you overcome those
frustrating moments when you just can’t seem
to remember anything?
The answer’s simple: give your mind a
workout with plenty of brain exercises!
Think about it this way – when our bodies
need to get in shape, we start eating more
healthily, hitting the gym more often and
looking after ourselves. The same mantra
goes for your mind; if you want to improve
memory, then you’ll need to arm yourself with
the best brain fitness out there!
But you don’t need to buy complicated games
or computer software that promises to
increase your mental activity to Stephen
Hawking’s level; instead, you can flex your
mental muscles with these powerful, effective
and simple memory games.

time you did. Studies have shown that regular
brain exercises such as numeric puzzles and
crosswords can significantly boost memory
performance, including the ability to recall
and retain important information.

Our mental agility and clarity can also be
greatly improved by our quality of diet. Foods
that are high in fat and sugar – like those
dreaded processed foods – can have a huge
impact in our brain’s ability to remember,
which is why children who eat unhealthy diets
often report having the most trouble with
schoolwork and tests.
If you want to fuel your mind with the right
kind of brain food, then make sure that your
diet gets plenty of these powerful superfoods:
• Blueberries. A recent study by the University
of Tufts reported that blueberry extract can
significantly improve short term memory

memories.
